It's been a long time since the Kinect has been a meaningful part of the Xbox experience, but as we've heard on numerous occasions in recent years, it's still finding a way to stay relevant - just not as part of the gaming world!
This latest example comes from the medical industry, sparked off by an image that was posted to Reddit in which the Xbox Kinect was shown being used as part of a CT scanning machine. Here's a look at post in question:
The comments are the most interesting thing about this, as numerous people pointed out that they've seen the Kinect being used for this purpose as well - and a CT technologist even confirmed that they're using it on a "daily" basis:
Looking through the rest of the comments, people have mentioned using Xbox's Kinect for security scans, augmented reality sandboxes, ghost hunting, exhibitions, airport check-in machines, and a whole lot of educational courses!
In other words, while days of the Kinect are over from an Xbox perspective, it's still a tool that's proving extremely useful (and cost-effective) for all kinds of purposes in 2024. It's probably sticking around for a quite a while yet, too.
Have you seen the Kinect being used outside of gaming? Let us know down in the comments below.

It was a good idea when you think of it just not when it's forced with an Xbox and no games really for it mad that it's literally the same as one you got with the console Xbox logo and everything
The tech was always awesome...I remember first time using one ...was so much fun....maybe one day in the distant future it will be built on
I loved the Kinect. It seems to me that Microsoft screwed this up by marketing it wrong. They forced it with the console at launch and not everyone wanted it. It's too bad that Microsoft got trounced by the media and bended to the criticism. For me it's just more of Microsoft not having a backbone. They need to do something and be committed to it.
Well at least is good for something 🤷 absolutely hated it along with PS Move and especially the Wii! There were so many great games that forced you to stand in front of the tv and move your arms like a jackass.
@Tecinthehead I personally really enjoy moving my hands around in front of the TV like a jackass.
Then again I play VR, sooooooooooo...
@StylesT Microsoft isn't using it at the moment, but a lot of the tech from the motion control era has essentially evolved into the tracking technology that underpins modern VR.
It's a shame Microsoft dropped the ball with the Xbox one because the Kinect really was an incredible piece of tech. Unfortunately the poor marketing, horrific DRM policies & lack of gaming focus put a major hamper on the Xbox one.
If things were different and the Kinect was utilized as well as it was during the 360 era I'd absolutely LOVE to see what a modern day iteration of Kinect could do when connected to the Series X|S. I could only imagine how cool the Kinect could've been paired with modern camera tech, AI tracking, facial recognition & the significantly more powerful hardware of the Series X|S (compared to the Xbox One). I'm sure DEVS would've come out with some super cool games! Wish we could've seen what Kinect was truly made of, it's super cool to see it used to this day!
I think they were just being cheap and didn't wanna spend money on an professional camera.
Was that CT unit installed with some parts missing or with parts not functioning correctly to where jury rigging an Xbox Connect to it was needed?
My Kinect never came out of the box, and I still have it. I have 3 questions relating to it:
1. Do Microsoft still manufacture them?
2. If not, is there a market for one that has never been used?
3. Would the Kinect work with the Series X?
Personally, I never wanted the Kinect (hence it stayed in the box), and I thought it was a disastrous decision to force people to buy one. Selling it as a bundle or as an add-on would have been the better option, thus allowing those, who like myself that didn't want one, to buy just the console. I wonder just how many sales Microsoft lost as a consequence of such a dumb decision...?
I really enjoyed Kinect.
I still have my Xbox One and Xbox 360 connected to my TV just for Kinect.
@Fiendish-Beaver The Kinect doesn't work with Series S or X. In fact, the Kinect-based games are the only ones in the Xbone's entire library that can't be played on current-gen consoles.
Good to know, @smoreon. Thank you...
@Fiendish-Beaver They stopped making the Kinect after launching the X1X. Only the original X1 has the Kinect port, the S and X models can use Kinect but you need a adapter. And unfortunately Kinect will not work with the series Xbox.
Thank you, @Rodimusprime13, that's really helpful. Makes me wonder whether my 'brand new' Kinect is worth anything or not...?
