Rumours about Xbox's future have been circulating online recently, with the company to directly address this in a "business update event" early next week. There have been some pretty wild claims so far, but apparently, nothing is "set in stone" according to Insider Gaming's owner Tom Henderson.
He has been speaking to a "few folk" at Xbox, and the team is apparently "very surprised" at the extent of the current rumours, as other than a few games (Hi-Fi RUSH and Sea Of Thieves) potentially being released on other platforms, nothing else has been "set in stone". Here's what he had to say:
"Make of this what you will, but speaking with a few folk over there, they [xbox] was very surprised at the extent of the "rumours" because nothing was set in stone apart from Hi-Fi and SoT from what I've gathered.
"Honestly sounds like for the most part it's been a prime example of Chinese whispers or people just making s*** up to capitalise off the hysteria. It will be interesting to see what is said because the rumours seem to be fueling decisions that might need more time in the oven so to speak."
Henderson adds to this, mentioning how Xbox is "actively" discussing everything right now, but if Microsoft said this publicly it may just create more drama. It's believed, however, that the rumours doing the rounds online right now could result in the company having to make a decision sooner rather than later.
"It's all actively being discussed. It'd probably cause more drama if they said "we're discussing it" - That's why it will be interesting to see what they say because the rumors have just sped up the amount of time they have to decide."
What do you make of all the rumours so far and what do you think Phil and team Xbox might have to say next week? Tell us in the comments.

Multiple failures mixed with terrible communication and bad management. It isn’t surprising that people are worried about the future of Xbox.
Does no one at Microsoft know that if you say nothing, people just have to hope for the best and prepare for the worst? And they've said yes or no to other big changes in the past, so the fact they need time to announce this is means it's a big BIG change, so of course it's going to make people assume the worst, especially from what it's based on.
Alternatively could be very surprised by the accuracy and depth of the leaks and rumors.
Can't wait to hear what they say.
this is the only interesting exciting news in gaming nowadays lol
You wait a a week plus because I doubt they are going to have this update on Monday. And you wonder why the rumors are so far out of whack?
It’s literally gotten to the point a studio who went remote was accused of being shut down.
That’s on them for waiting this long.
People rare accusing you of fiscal suicide and you can't even deny it.
It’s also been all over Twitter today that the Starfield PS5 rumor was false, with the originator, Nate the Hate, saying he was owing up to the mistake.

Don’t believe everything you read on the internet. Look forward to hearing what’s actually up next week.

There was a strange combination of thin rumors, people who make exclusives their identity (on both sides of the console space) and media that has a xbox negativity=views mindset. They fed off each other and formed a giant snowball.
Don't be shocked when the statement that is being forced out of xbox is non commital on a well defined policy of what will or won't be exclusive. They probably have lawyers drafting the message for this presentation, blog post, or whatever the heck a business update event is.
Expect phrases like "Case by case exclusivity" "committed to the xbox brand of hardware" "our gamers are the most important thing to us." They probably only talk about Hi Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves in terms of actual games while giving the vague impressions that there will probably be others here and there.
I just expect in case all of this (or most of) rumors were just rumors and that Microsoft (and Sony and Nintendo) remove any minimal idea of going full third party while consoles still exists.
@SAHgamer Satan is king! Bow to our red horned overlord!
Everything I see is MS is slowly replacing the term "xbox" with "console". Which suggests they sre ditching xbox. They had every opportunity to stop the rumors. It is happening. It is sad.
Yeah, I'm sure Insider Gaming's owner has a direct line with all the higher ups at Microsoft real time. They just happen to be scrambling about to get a statement together when more damning leaks dropped, when they could've very easily just denied or ignored such baseless rumors day-of like they've done in the past, including when they were true like the 360 store closing.
This is what happens when you don't communicate well to your customer base and allow the rumours to swirl. And it seems that Xbox have historically made poor decisions that impact their customers so why shouldn't people be wary.
Free publicity.
The irony is that internally this isn't particularly different to what Xbox have been doing for years; some games go multiplatform, the rest go to both Xbox and PC. They've been doing some variations on this for years, so nobody inside the company was really thinking about the optics involved in adding more multiplatform games immediately after laying off thousands of people.
But then, 'nobody thought about the optics' seems to be the Xbox corporate mantra.
How great would it be if nothing comes to other platforms. Then we can finally put this to bed.
Surprised? Lol people go crazy about things hidden on shelves in the background of Xbox videos.
If that’s the case then just come out and say it Xbox and also whilst you doing that give us Xbox gamers future security about your next generation console.
Then we can all get over it 😊
I just want them to say something that shows me my digital library won’t be unusable and worthless when we get to next-gen. Otherwise why would I spend any more of my hard earned £s on their store?
@awp69 XboxEra who reported Starfield have said Nate was not their source (he just seems to be claiming he was the first to say it), and their reporter saw actual evidence it was being considered.
They do make clear though that it wasn't decided for definite, and they just said being considered
@Feffster exactly where I am, I dot care if PS players get access to exclusives, I care about them taking the first step In ending our library.
I've just finished LAD:IW and if this wasn't having over us I would buy the DLC but like hell am I adding anything atm.
What if all this was deliberate? Does nobody find the timing of all this very strange. Hot off the heels of a really good developer direct that (I'm sorry it's just the truth) was a lot better than Sony's and around the time of your competitors showcase thingy.
All eyes are on Xbox right now, it's like they are baiting playstation owners with the possibility of having their games and could at the last second say "we never said that" "it was all rumours" "WE never said anything"
There would be no blowback because officially nothing was announced and now they've got the entire industry watching them and then announce new hardware like this new handheld we keep hearing about.
I'm not saying any of this is true, it's just a theory but stranger things have happened
Even if they're not ditching Xbox who's going to want to buy one when they can get only Microsoft 1st party games on Xbox but Microsoft and Sony 1st party games on PS5? Plus if they're going digital only that will make it less appealing than the competition too.
Yeah they have GamePass but subscriptions have slowed a lot and you can get that on PC anyway. Sony also has PS Plus which isn't as good but still has loads of games on it, more than GamePass. Yeah they're not as new but is FOMO/impatience really enough to sell a console?
I just can't see anything ahead other than even worse console sales and an increasingly fast death for Xbox even if they don't ditch it immediately...
Everyone saying MS should just say something.. clearly they haven’t decided what they’re doing yet so how can they say anything? Public pressure to rush decisions may not help things go the way the public wants. For me. I don’t think I’ve ever been closer to buying a PlayStation. If everything is multi-platform I might as well buy the console with the exclusives.
@DKGXX85 why would it be deliberate? What exactly have MS gained through it? Nothing.
Honestly this was something that was meant to be announced to investors and not something that the gaming community was meant to find out about early.
"people just making s*** up to capitalise off the hysteria"
The clicks and the hysteria are connected here. If you keep a cool head, you can see that this is basically what happened. Besides, some people feel entitled to have companies at their feet five minutes after someone spread rumours about them. Nintendo and Sony never confirm or deny rumours but Microsoft is doomed if it needs a week to react?
The persistence and disproportionate degree of negativity about Xbox on the internet whatever the matter makes me think that most of it comes from fans that feel the existential need to attack Xbox in order to protect another brand (Playstation) or people that simply feel more secure blaming Xbox for everything, like everyone else apparently does.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner like I said, it's just a wild theory
I'm probably way off, but the timing of all this is strange and certain pieces just dont add up no matter which angle you look at it from. One thing I don't believe is that we'll ever see halo and gears on PlayStation. This is all about Bethesda and Activision I think
@Kaloudz "Plus if they're going digital only that will make it less appealing than the competition too.
Everyone will be going digital only. That's the direction the market is heading in"
Not really. Physical is doing just fine on the other consoles so can't see them going digital only any time soon. Physical games make up 60% of 1st party game sales on PS5, for games like Death Stranding and Uncharted 4 physical sales are more than 80%!
Exactly what I feared most. We're ain't getting a definitive answer, and why would we expect to? Messaging is not an Xbox speciality after all.
I now expect lots of "nothings been decided," "we're commited to Series S &X" (with probably no mention of future hardware). Vague AF will likely be the theme.
I honestly have been staggered at just how blasé they've been this week or so. People trading their machines in and they just sit there silent. Madness.
@FatGuyInLilCoat "Everything I see is MS is slowly replacing the term 'xbox' with 'console'".
Because Xbox not just means an Xbox console, it's the name of their gaming division. People spreading unfounded rumours about them dropping hardware have them use the term "console".
@DKGXX85 Microsoft has been publishing games on other consoles and PC for a while and some games going multiplatform is the only bit that is backed up by more reliable sources. Everything else has either been made up by random people hungry for internet pseudo-fame, e.g., Nate the Hate, or your wild theory is right and it's the best marketing strategy of Xbox in years.
It doesn't make sense to have a Business Update event just to announce 2 games going multiplatform. So if there really are only 2 going multiplatform, it's more likely those games are announced in a Nintendo Direct and the Business Update is more about commitment to Xbox consoles/PC/cloud/mobile (the platforms that have Game Pass).
In my opinion there'll be just one or two games going multiplat and that's it. (I know I know I can be surprised next week)
But my opinion about all those rumors is that MS shouldn't be everyday admitting or denying rumours on Twitter from those 'insiders' (and now some of them are admitting they exaggerated and made mistakes). Why? Because the midia takes everything MS say and use in a bad way so why give them more ammo to new rumours? It's rumours feeding from other rumours and then suddenly the fans start going crazy. On the other hand I've seen many people here just saying to calm down and wait until something from MS, not from 'leakers'.
Do I believe MS should be more straightforward in communicating with the fans? Absolutely! Sometimes they're too much vague. I'd love to hear they saying today what will and won't be exclusive for the next generation. But I understand their stand as exclusivity is the main point the regulators try to criticize and block MS actions in the market. Or anyone here believe that if MS said all games would be exclusive they wouldn't be called a monopoly and the acquisitions blocked? (Bethesda and ABK acquisitions prove my point).
On the other hand, to see the distinction, when everything from Insomniac leaked the white knights (or blue?) came out and said "We shall pretend this doesn't exist because Sony doesn't deserve this" (even when they're planning to split Spider-Man 3 in three parts to charge more from the players). Why people don't start asking Sony to come out and confirm or deny these bad practices?
I have the three consoles, love to play them all, but I'm not blind with all the different treatment they receive from the midia.
Sorry for the looooong comment folks, feel free to skip it 🤣
If it's just the smaller games and SoT, I don't get why it couldn't be a simple blog post already:
That would cover SoT, HiFi Rush and Hellblade 2 if they wanted it to. And if they did want Starfield or Indiana Jones to go wider too, they could add:
It doesn't need a "business update" (even though the latter section will still cause some consternation) and you could keep it vague enough to not ruin Nintendo's Direct - it'd be much better than letting rumours run riot with no shutting them down...
“ a prime example of Chinese whispers or people just making s*** up to capitalise off the hysteria”
I rather suspect in a few days that’ll be a very accurate summary of the situation
Maybe Xbox are going off the there's no such thing as bad publicity thing leaving it this long as everyone talking about Xbox 😂
I would laugh if this turned out to be a nothingburger and all the people who rage quit Xbox come crawling back 🤣🤣
@Foxx_64740 Well, you wrote a great comment.
Xbox is an absolute shambles right now. For those of us with significant investment in the store it's extremely concerning and I don't really see a way how it can be good news unless it's fervently denied and the opportunity for that has been and gone.
Regardless if it's the best case scenario the damaging options are clearly on the table and being actively discussed. I'm not chill about it. I've been using the Xbox store since the very start.
Odds are this statement will be wishy washy corpo babble that will leave far too much to the imagination and we'll be no further forward on the significant question of why I as a customer should spend a single penny more on content when I have doubts about the future security of those investments. It's a joke. MS need to firmly get their act together and start focusing on the games. It's painful to watch at this point and the only thing keeping me here is that I tied myself to the ecosystem. If I was coming in fresh I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot bargepole. That is the true state of xbox in 2024.
I feel like we all need to sit down, have a cuppa and a bit of a breather.
Banjo- wrote:
This isn't completely true anymore. Sarah Bond is the new president of Xbox, Phil Spencer is now the CEO of Microsoft gaming, not just Xbox. I suspect this is in preparation for their massive push into mobile.
Honestly on here this week I’ve seen more flip flops than on a beach.
Let’s wait and see what’s announced.
Don’t defend what you don’t know.
Don’t claim it’s not a big deal. Xbox don’t have public announcements for things that they don’t think are a big deal.
Don’t sell your Xbox when nothing has been announced and nothing will change what your plastic box could do yesterday, it will still do it tomorrow.
The extremes in society now are ridiculous.
I said in the week….. on MS can kill Xbox and they won’t do that.
If you don’t like the direction fine (I don’t like the acquisitions or game pass that much) I still love Xbox.
Do I want more and better from them, yes same as I do most businesses as a consumer why wouldn’t I want more for my money. They record huge huge profits.
Anyone actively asking for less or calling others “entitled” whilst not understand that word are plain silly.
We are all entitled to want more for our money.
So many people demanding Xbox to address the rumors. I totally understand people want answers. We live in a society where news and rumors spread so fast, we demand to know now, but it can’t always be now. Sometimes we have to wait.
I had a feeling that something at Xbox leaked and everybody either didn’t have answers yet, or maybe they couldn’t answer due to an NDA or legal issues. Letting us know we would find out more in a week wasn’t doom and gloom. People on both sides are probably making it a bigger issue than what it is. Just stay calm, we’ll all find out soon enough.
@Jenkinss Xbox is the name of their gaming division in practical terms. Job titles and corporate definitions don't have any relevance when communicating with fans. Xbox is a brand they use on mobile, PC and console, therefore when they say Xbox they don't mean just consoles and when they say "console" they refer to the Xbox console, unless they mention "Nintendo" and "Playstation" when they refer to them, as they have been doing frequently since the ABK acquisition started. To think that they replaced the Xbox term with the console term because they are abandoning Xbox consoles is absurd.
@Stocksy Likewise, others can find "plain silly" to force Microsoft to address every rumour immediately, when neither Sony nor Nintendo do that. Because that's exactly what I said (knowing its meaning well), not that people are not "entitled" to want more for their money. You can ask for as much as you want. Heck, some people here get Game Pass Ultimate for free and still complain about it! 🤣
@Banjo- this simply isnt the case anymore. The shuffling of titles was deliberate. Microsoft gaming is growing beyond Xbox. If it wasn't, Phil Spencer would still be the CEO of Xbox. There are many other examples of the company minimizing the brand as well, including the renaming of game pass PC, and now this week they have released an ad for "Microsoft Game Pass" most likely a marketing faux pas using this branding before an announcement.
@Jenkinss To date, it's not like you're saying. I have my Xbox apps on my laptop and phone and when I go to xbox.com right now, I can browse "Console games" and "PC games" in the "Games" menu. Xbox is the gaming brand of Microsoft. Even their studios were rebranded from "Microsoft Studios" to "Xbox Game Studios".
@Banjo- anyone that claims “when Sony doesn’t or Nintendo doesn’t” is too invested on one side. I don’t do “supporting one bit of plastic” or pretending one is victim to anything:…
They aren’t they all suffer backlashes and they all do crazy stuff.
I’m a consumer to all three and act like a consumer. When everyone starts acting like a consumer the gaming industry will a fair healthier place.
@Stocksy "anyone that claims “when Sony doesn’t or Nintendo doesn’t” is too invested on one side."
What I said is a simple fact. Sony and Nintendo don't deny rumours and it's 100% relevant and related to this because the same users are expecting Microsoft to deny and confirm rumours immediately. Turning that reality into a supposedly console war and fanboy argument doesn't make any sense and doesn't match what you say you pretend, "When everyone starts acting like a consumer the gaming industry will a fair healthier place", but the opposite. Take this as constructive.
@Banjo- and I agree with that, I'm saying it is clear the direction they are moving is mobile ( there can be no argument about this, theyve stated it, the purpose of the entire ABK acquisition, etc). And when they create their own storefront on Apple and Android, all evidence points to them dropping the Xbox branding, it will take place outside the Xbox division, but still under Phil Spencer. They have already created that framework.
@Jenkinss They want to expand beyond consoles, yes. Mobile and PC is where they expect to grow more, yes. The console market is limited by the dedicated players that prefer simplicity or are used to playing on consoles (i.e., us). The PC market is bigger and more flexible, trouncing consoles in gaming revenue. The mobile market reaches almost everybody. Candy Crush and Call of Duty are two mobile hits, so yeah, you're right about it, but I also think that it was a way to prevent Sony from buying more Xbox exclusion deals, because they did the same with Zenimax for Bethesda's games, that are PC/console games (not mobile) that were moneyhatted by Sony: Deathloop, Ghostwire: Tokyo and potentially Starfield.
@Feffster genuinely that's my concern. I went Xbox because of how great they've been at backwards compatibility and been able to take those games with you. I just want confirmation that whatever the plans are for the future that will still be the case
If nothing else has been "set in stone" apart from Hi-Fi and SoT, so it means that other games being ported to other platforms are really been considered? Because that's what I get from this.
It shows what a fragile, vulnerable state Xbox’s public reputation is in if unverified rumours can spread like wildfire and be accepted without question by their most loyal fans and wider games media.
I could attempt to start a similar rumour for PlayStation. No one would believe me. The rumour would go nowhere. Sony’s actions speak for themselves. The public is in no doubt of Sony’s vision for the future of PS5.
I think this whole event really exposes that Xbox needs a better PR strategy and better communication. They need to reassure us that they’re in this for the long haul, I hope to see that next week.
There are only two types of gamers who have been crying and whining over these rumors this week: Gamers who don't understand how business works, and gamers who are still hung up on childish console wars.
NOTHING is official until Microsoft comes out and says something and some keyboard warriors on Twitter are NOT a reliable source of information. Just hang tight and let's see what happens next week and stop feeding the trolls. "SoNY is Numbah ONE and XboX is gUNna DiE! Bwahahaha!" Is not worth the Cheetos on the fingertips of the person typing it.
My only issue with this past week is how Microsoft didn't confront the rumors head on and let people sit and wait. That's never the right move, in my opinion.
@Cakefish I agree that they should address the rumours, but a week time is reasonable. You make a very good point, but isn't the media biased, aren't most of those sources unreliable and aren't there a lot of trolls and Xbox haters? How do we know the big picture, how many people are REALLY selling their Xbox because of the rumours? This reminds of some countries that censor internet traffic and apps and the reality that people perceive is not representative nor real. What you read comes from real and free people, but it's a tiny and distorted portion of the picture. This internet drama is not representative of the Xbox user base.
@FatGuyInLilCoat agreed. Just like they praise how good game pass does. When they simply just dropped Xbox live as an online service and rolled it up to gamepass. I only want to play online as I’m someone that only buys physical copies of console games for my PS5 and series X. I have no interest in GP but I must buy it to play online with friends. Microsoft is really looking at the bigger picture of gaming as many have stated. But I don’t want Xbox to disappear as a brand.
@shoeses Agree 100%.
When the rumor is as thin as "they are considering it" then it really shouldn't be spread as much as it was. If you remember the Xbox wants to buy Nintendo rumors where it turned out to be some high-level Microsoft exec outside the gaming side of the company thought he had a simple, original idea that they could just purchase Nintendo. Phil politely explained it's not currently possible and that was the extent of their "plans" to buy Nintendo.
This is probably a similar case of brainstorming with people outside the gaming sphere. The Xbox team is trying to meet the Microsoft heads somewhere in the middle in maximizing the software profits without hurting the Xbox brand too much. I'm sure Sony has had similar discussions internally with the Playstation team where they at least try to get a picture of what revenue would look like if their games were sold on Switch, Xbox, PC, etc.
Twitter's been so toxic over this that I'm currently at the Winchester, having a nice cold pint, and waiting for this all to blow over.
@BacklogBrad with all the evidence we have now, do you still believe hifi rush is not going multiplatform? Or do you specifically mean Starfield when you say the rumor is thin?
@Banjo- they didnt take a week, they took a month. Hifi Rush leaks started in early January, and they said nothing because they're almost certainly true.
@Jenkinss I mean these Nathan Drake's rumours that he has just cancelled himself. Some Xbox games going multiplatform is nothing new and hasn't changed anything in the Xbox ecosystem. About Hi-Fi Rush going multiplatform, if true coincides with the "on a case by case basis" that Phil explained years ago about Zenimax games. How did that rumour surprise you so much?
@Banjo- Hifi Rush and SoT going to Playststion is absolutely new. Those are first party titles not from existing mulitplat franchises. Denying this is delving into crazy copium territory.
@Jenkinss What copium? What denial? Read my comment again, you reacted too quickly and I added the Bethesda part just before your reply. Obviously "it's new". Each game added to another platform is "something new" 🤣.
EDIT (same as above):
About Hi-Fi Rush going multiplatform, if true coincides with the "on a case by case basis" that Phil explained years ago about Zenimax games. How did that rumour surprise you so much?
@Jenkinss I believe Hi Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves are. There is actually tangible evidence of Hi Fi Rush with the PS and Switch outfits in the datamine, so that one must be really close. It is pretty close to a lock to be at least part of the announcement next week.
The Starfield one is being backtracked heavily enough where I doubt it is going to playstation at all. The Starfield rumor started with XboxEra and Nate the Hate both "confirming" each other's rumor then it snowballed from there. Nate the Hate says he has seen enough since then to believe it is not happening and XboxEra walked it back to they only had that the port was "being discussed."
@BacklogBrad You are right and let's reiterate that Phil Spencer said about Zenimax that games would be multiplatform "on a case by case basis", since the beginning. Hi-Fi Rush is a Zenimax game. Some of the rumours were about all Xbox games going multiplatform and about Microsoft abandoning the consoles market. There is a huge difference.
So, things may not be as bad as some of us think, @Kaloudz. However, maybe I should have added a now at the end of the sentence!
Apparently nothing is set in stone, and things are not so bad as was being said, but I guess there is every possibility that plans have changed due to the communities severe reaction to the initial rumours. Conversely, had everyone been as relaxed as some... ahem 😉then it is entirely possible that the original rumours would have been enacted upon in their entirety!
This now means you can say, 'I told you so!', and others will have egg on their faces. You can thank me later... 😂
I have no issue with Sea of Thieves going multiplatform as it needs a large community in order to keep the game going. The smaller the community, the smaller the revenue. The smaller the revenue, the less frequent the updates and add-ons, and the less frequently they occur, which in turn leads to a smaller community, and so it goes on. SoT going multiplatform is for the same reason that Destiny remained multiplatform, and is why Bungies next game is likely to be multiplatform (as are potentially any of Sony's future GaaS games (assuming that any actually make it to market!)).
I have some minor issues in relation to Hi-Fi Rush because exclusives need not just be AAA, but most importantly, they need to be good, which Hi-Fi certainly is. So porting the only Game of the Year contender that Xbox has produced in recent years, is for me, a poor idea. The more exclusives a platform has, the more likely people are to join that platform. The more good exclusives that platform has, the better. So shedding the game as an exclusive does not help Xbox with regards to exclusives. Is Hi-Fi a system seller? Probably not. Not on it's own, but it is certainly something to consider when deciding which platform to buy into...
lol, yeah nothing to see here, it's just the usual Xbox porting first party games to PS5, same as it ever was. -Baghdad Banjo

Phil Spencer when MS bought Bethesda: “If you’re an Xbox customer, this is about delivering great exclusive games for you, on platforms where Game Pass exists.” He said there would be exceptions where contractual obligations exist. Go watch the video, if you've got a short memory and don't remember the roundtable. Image now saying something like "how does Hifi Rush going to PS5 surprise you so much?" This is a full shift in business from what we were promised. Pretending otherwise is absolutely asinine.
My memory is fine, thanks! Now I see you're just being rude.
Apparently not much is "set in stone
No fudging way!! Are we towards the tail end of:mass hysteria, bizarre over reaction and rampant speculation, with a healthy dose of wishful thinking??
Please keep it going, gaming websites need the traffic revenue 🤣🤣....
@SAHgamer Please don't bring religion here, it's not appropriate.
I think they are going to announce the next Xbox and blow everything out of the water. A 50 TFLOP powerhouse. 10 Ghz 64 core CPU, Dual GPU's equivalent to 10x 4090's with 96GB video RAM each and 96GB system RAM. 12TB solid state drive with 48GB p/s. Capable of 16K 240fps. With support up to four screens. All consoles will include Xbox series 3 elite controller. All for the low price of $600 because Microsoft don't give a fooouuuck and they're going to whoop everybody because they got the money to foooouuuck around with.
@Phantasystar77 Good for you skipper. 👋
Don't let the 🚪hit you where ✝️ 🪓 you.
Honestly, how can they be surprised? You let slip that you have intent to send multiple exclusives to competing consoles. People will speculate what will go and when will it end. There is a whole cottage industry on YT, built on speculation, rumors, and "leaks." Then you put the lid on the pressure cooker by not responding for a couple weeks.
ABK will largely remain multi-plat. Fine.
Otherwise, nothing should go — not one port. In this climate, as soon as you engage in porting Xbox to PS, you eradicate confidence in your commitment to the platform.
@CaptainCluck ... Everyone has failures. PSP, PS Vita, PSVR1, PSVR2, Spiderman 2. Sony isn't out of the woods either. They are struggling to make a profit and the future just got a whole lot more expensive. Let's see what 3 trillion dollars does for XBOX before everyone loses their minds.
@Kaloudz - Agree ... mostly. All digital isn't a decade away. it's here. Already.
@Jenkinss - Ok, so just watched the round table again. And he was exactly right. You were exactly wrong. Nothing new at all with the strategy. Are you just trolling?
@Clyde_Radcliffe yeah but exclusives aren't going to PS. Was just ponie rumors. All that's happening is Hi-Fi rush and Sea of Thieves are 'probably' getting ported.
MS are still making Xbox consoles and will still have exclusives. Calm down people.
@Phantasystar77 ok so what will you do if smaller PlayStation games start going to Xbox?
Maybe everyone else has forgot but I haven't forgotten when we was told that PlayStation games would never go to PC and look where we are now, their last release was day and date. If I'm not mistaken isn't death stranding on PC gamepass? Can you imagine halo on PlayStation now what people would be saying.
@VoidPunk
How is selling their games on the two biggest systems fiscal suicide? Sounds like a smart business move to me
@CaptainCluck I totally agree about the communication. It’s been really poor and now they are only coming out to speak because they have had their hand forced.
I fully expect the update to further muddy the waters and clarify pretty much nothing at all.
@ZuneTattooGuy The idea that it’s fiscal suicide is bizarre. It’s not a good move if you are an Xbox console fan but financially it will make MS even more money every year.
I have a feeling that all MS will do in the coming week is say very little and muddy the waters even more. Their lack of communication up to this point has been baffling and it feels very much as though there are too many people with too many different visions of what Xbox should be. Phil Spencer hasn’t been in control for a long time and he’s now just a sacrificial lamb for MS.
Hi Fi Rush and SoT will be confirmed but nothing else. The new All Digital Xbox will be announced.
I genuinely think that little else will be said.
@BaldBelper78 What communication should they have had? They can't respond to every stupid rumor that YT podcasters dream up. As much as you think this is a huge deal, 99% of the population cares not one bit, or is even mildly aware. They just play their games, enjoy it and move on with life.
Going by the polls on Push Square, if Microsoft confirm anything other than Gears or Halo making their way to PlayStation, it’s not going to move the needle in the slightest..
No XBox games need to be released on other consoles? They have Xbox and PC. If you send it to PS and Nintendo, you lose value on Xbox and less people will feel the"Need" to purchase an xbox, and you will have even less sales???
I think Phil needs to go now. He’s not a good boss. Sony and Nintendo don’t mess about like this. Especially Nintendo
@Bionic-Spencer I think they will bring over MCC. Halo seems to be in the same spot currently as it was in early 2018, support for the new game (Halo 5 back then, Infinite now) has pretty much come to an end and the next game is far away. What happened in the meantime back then was they fixed up MCC and brought it to new platforms.
@Phantasystar77 the incentive for playstation putting smaller games on xbox is no one will buy a playstation for the sole purpose of playing a small game (returnal, sackboy, etc) those game simply do not sell systems. If they can get more money than it takes to develope an xbox version then it is a win (I imagine they could do pretty well on switch). This is why Hi Fi Rush makes so much sense for a multiplat, it does not bring people to purchase an xbox but is considered good enough where other playerbases would check it out if available to them.
Playstation is porting its games to pc and mobile at faster and faster rates. The industry is moving past the plastic box ecosystems and fans should probably prepare themselves for that future.
Xbox will not eliminate itself from the hardware space. If anything it moves to more of a device landscape where the new model(s) comes out every few years. They simply don't care about console sale figures and never will. They just need to provide a device for us to play gamepass and purchase digital games.
My uncle works at Microsoft, and he says they're going to sell their gaming division to Sony, and they'll come round your house and take your Xbox away.
@PhileasFragg Haha.
@jazzmatazzo PSP and Spiderman 2 are not failures.
@Rafie ... They are financial failures. PSP is one of the worst product decisions ever. They lose money on each unit, and do not add any new users who may then purchase games. It can literally only ever lose money for them. Spiderman had 5+ years of development and broke even (maybe since we know they counted the "bundled" units in the sales figures) For a 5 year project, even if they manage to squeeze 100m or so, that's an abject investment failure and a tiny 20M per year on their investment.
@jazzmatazzo 80 million plus is a "failure". 🤔 The Vita is a commercial failure, not the PSP. Spiderman 2 is still selling. I can't call that a failure yet. I'm not sure if you're just cherry picking things to create a narrative...but there are plenty of devs that goes through this. Including Xbox and Nintendo.
@jazzmatazzo Right about what? I'm trolling, excuse me? I posted the actual quote. Please do a little better than "I watched the video." Releasing a Bethesda game that doesn't have a contractual obligation, or is an existing franchise, to PS5 would make what Phil Spencer said at that event a lie.
Once again:
Phil Spencer wrote:
Critically there has been one "great game" to come out of Bethesda since the acquisition, and that's Hi-Fi Rush. So was the acquisition about delivering it as an exclusive, as was said straight to our faces?
@Rafie I'm saying specifically the PSP is a really bad product financially. If they sell 50 million, it will still never really make money. A product that sells at a loss, and doesn't net you any new customers, is just incredibly stupid. So they can brag about selling a billion units, at a loss, and it wouldn't make financial sense. Sales and financial success are not the same.
And yes, this is not specific to Sony. All MS and AAA game studios are getting a wake up call. Investors have better places to put their money than gambling on these 5+ product cycles.
@jazzmatazzo Alright man you got it. Don't wanna argue or debate about it. COMMERCIALLY the PSP was a hit. That's my point about this. I digress tho. Have a good one.
@BacklogBrad you ended up being spot on with this.
