Phil Spencer recently talked to outlet Game File about a wide range of different topics to do with Microsoft's gaming business, and the Xbox boss slipped in some chatter about Xbox Cloud Gaming and how much it's grown in recent times.
Cloud gaming on Microsoft's platform "now accounts for a double-digit percentage of total hours of Xbox games played" as the method of play becomes much more popular. Phil even said that at one point Xbox had more cloud slots than needed, but now that's completely changed as demand has grown.
"There was a time when we weren't deploying more [server] blades because we had more supply than we did demand for the server racks that we had in place [...] That's clearly not true today."
Indeed, we've started to see considerable wait times for Xbox Cloud Gaming every now and then - the modern way of play is certainly becoming more popular. We can see why - if internet speeds are good you can jump into huge AAA games on Xbox without any sort of download time!
Down below are some other highlights from Game File's chat with Phil, and the full interview is well worth a read if you're curious about more of what the Xbox boss had to say during a busy week for the team.
Are you using Xbox Cloud Gaming these days? Let us know if you're part of the cloud gaming surge in the comments section.

Wonder how much of this is due to Palworld? Seem like the majority, not all, of people on Xbox Ones and Series S have been having tons of crashing issues with switching to cloud gaming resolving it. Likely due to running on Series X equivalent hardware.
@Krydle I've tried it on a couple of games when I didn't want to wait for the download, it was terrible , so I download now, suppose its ok if your inclined to play on mobile ,which iam not
i bet phil cant wait to go 100% streaming and jack up gp fees fees fees
@Krydle I have streamed using my Surface Book 2 (United States here with 300Mbps Verizon Fios) and I haven't had any issues. I am using a wireless connection.
I have tried a couple of games on my Series X using Cloud (so I didn't have to wait for download). It's a wired connection and it ran fine.
Image quality wasn't pristine just due to the nature of streaming, but there wasn't any input lag.
Way I read this is, people are not really playing with their Xbox a lot.
As I have yet to meet somebody successfully/acceptably using XCloud outside of just fiddling and trying it out, only logical conclusion is that users basically fiddle less than 10 times more on their Xbox.
In all seriousness, streaming is not going to work for 70% of the planet for 5, maybe 10 more years. Just stop aggressively pushing it, you are just souring people on it before it's time.
It’s worked fine for me. I had a buddy playing Forza on his phone on his lunch break. I don’t really play handhelds that much because they cramp my hands.
@Krydle I dunno what deals with the devil people are making to get xcloud working but every time I have tried it’s unplayable. Remote play on Xbox and PS works a bit better but I can still only play strategy/turn based type games that don’t require quick reactions.
I desperately hope we don’t go down the all cloud route in the future. I just don’t see it working for regular people who don’t want to pay for the highest tier fibre optic broadband and be tinkering in their router settings to get the lowest latency. The joy of consoles is turning it on and everything working out the box.
Sure would be nice if they made it easier to access xCloud on the SteamDeck, Raspberry Pi machines, etc. through dedicated apps...
I have a 600 Mb internet badwidth and I’m using Game Pass strictly via xCloud on my Steam Deck. I’ve already finished As Dusk Falls (fantastic game), tried Persona 3 Reload (prefer the FES version on PS2 via PCSX) and I’m currently playing Forza 8 and Tales of Arise. I’m loving this way of gaming. Zero downloads, rare fps drops/lag. Also, I’ve already had a few situations when I had to wait about 5 mins to start playing as the servers were full, so cloud gaming is becoming a thing finally.
@Krydle my experience is that it depends on the game you’re trying.
I mainly play turn based rpg’s on xcloud and those look and play great in my experience.
For all other games I use Remote Play.
I just got a new phone, and I've been using Xbox GP cloud gaming quite a bit on it! My experience has been quite good. Being a Switch owner who plays 100% portable, graphics sharpness isn't a big problem for me. I'm trying to save the bigger, beefier games for my TV, but I like the option to play this way.
I've been playing a lot of DQ and NNK and my experience good. I guess because they are rather tame games 😄.
I have a middle ground Internet package and streaming works fantastic on console and PC. I do see some slowdown with my Samsung tablet and Samsung phone, though. But on PC it's a remarkable experience.
@Krydle I think I've had good image quality once, generally its pretty poor and Stadia was a way better experience overall whilst it lasted, without being great itself. This is on PC with very fast Internet, so perhaps your location can have a big impact upon the experience
I’ve been playing starfield via cloud on my surface when I want to pick up and play in a different room and it’s been pretty decent.
Cloud gaming is great for my niece and nephew who are switching games every 5 minutes. I also don't want to store the dozen or so games on my drives.
I use cloud myself from time to time and have been impressed with its performance.
I mostly use it to get a quick daily achievement
I used to play a lot of the end-game of Yakuza: Like A Dragon remoting to my phone upstairs from the console downstairs; if that counts. Works great for turn based games.
I'll use cloud for achievement or level up in the likes of Lies of P or on holiday somewhere with the dogs, but you can't beat installed.
....and 10 hours of waiting to get into the game. Along with overall film grain, blur over the graphics. And inferior experience to just buying, playing, and owning the game.
@GeeEssEff AMEN, brother!!!!!!
Cloud is horrible overall experience unless pay for super Uber God level connection with fiber made from angel hair powered by flux capacitor operating at no lower than 1.21 jigowatts that was struck with the full power of Mjolnir.
If have anything less, you're much, much, much better off using a console.
Wait until you are able to play GP on all your Apple screens and those steaming numbers will boom….
I've had good experiences with the streaming though last few times I've gone to use it the queuing times have been too long.
Xbox cloud gaming is not available in my country even though Nvidia and PS Plus something is also. I have tries Nvidia in a 100Mps connection and it ran fine.
I'm actually pretty impressed with those numbers if they are accurate - its higher than I thought it might be.
Like others here, I've had poor performance when I last tried it, but my internet speeds are still from the stone age, so it's not a fair test. The only streaming I don't seem to have an issue with is is the PSN streams, which is strange I'm always told they are cr@p, but if I want a quick play of a title before I decide to download, its always been fine..
I'm still not keen on cloud access over local machine access, but maybe as the tech grows evermore reliable I'll get into it.
I have three friends that spend most of their game time playing on game pass cloud, mostly MLB the show and Forza. They love it. One of them doesn't even own an Xbox at all.
