Disney and Epic Games have announced an "all new games and entertainment universe" connected to Fortnite to expand the reach of key IP. As part of this, Disney is also investing $1.5 billion to acquire an equity stake in Epic Games alongside this "multiyear" project.
Disney's Chief Executive Officer called it "Disney's biggest entry ever into the world of games", noting how it offers "significant opportunities for growth and expansion":
"In addition to being a world-class games experience and interoperating with Fortnite, the new persistent universe will offer a multitude of opportunities for consumers to play, watch, shop and engage with content, characters and stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar and more."
Epic Games CEO and founder Tim Sweeney mentioned how this would bring together the Disney and Fortnite communities, while Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D'Amaro said it would enable Disney to bring together its incredible collection of stories in ways "it could have only dreamed" previously.
Disney already uses Unreal Engine across its portfolio on games like Kingdom Hearts 3 and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. According to the teaser trailer above, this new universe connected to Fortnite is coming soon(ish). When we learn more, we'll let you know.

Wow. A dollar and 50 cents. Really pushing the boat out. 😏
@TownYsend beat me to it!
I'm not ready to see Stitch and Wall-E in Fortnite.

R.I.P Epic
To have Disney together on the boat is a guarantee to sink faster.
Still waiting for the final season of Fortnite before I start so I get the full plot. Nothing worse than starting a game and it gets cancelled before it can have a proper finale. These extra Disney characters will probably over complicate the story considering we already have Peter Griffin killing Solid Snake.
Right, so instead of reviving Disney Infinity, they're dropping the Magic Kingdom into Fortnite...
Not the dumbest thing I've ever heard...
Well that's disappointing. I guess Disney got tired of ruining their own and decided to move on to something else too try and destroy. Epic games had a good run.
@STX your absolutely right on that!
@SAHgamer Amen
When did spending $1.5B feel like chump change? Here I am saving reward points to buy BG3 …
@Kaloudz This seems more like "we're gonna use Fortnite as a platform" than making games that would be sold separately.
For gaas games Fortnite is kinda the Borg .... kinda
So Epic laid off loads of fortnite dev team members, and then launched their most popular season ever while unprepared, and then more big expansions, and now this. I'm sure SOME of that $1.5bn and all the money they made from the OG season could have gone to keeping those jobs.
The way development works we'll be seeing the effects of these layoffs in the game quality slowly as content slows down, and reduces in quality. We've already seen a few things...
