Player choice in Obsidian's games has played a huge role over the years, and in the company's upcoming first-person fantasy RPG Avowed, it will be no different.
Just in case you have been wondering how much freedom you'll have, the game director Carrie Patel recently confirmed how Avowed would have multiple endings. So basically, don't worry - there's still plenty of freedom to determine your fate in this world set in the same universe as the Pillars of Eternity series. Here's exactly what she had to say:
"I mean it's an Obsidian game. What else would we be if we didn't have a few different endings?"
Unfortunately, what we don't know just yet is just how many different endings there will be or just how different they'll be from other choices.
Speaking of choice, player choice will (obviously) play a significant role in the game where an event happens somewhere whenever the player does something. Consequences also play a part, and the team is making sure to provide a level of balance when it comes to decision-making and outcomes:
"Some things need to have surprising but believable outcomes. If everything plays out exactly as you expect, it could feel a little boring. And at the same time, not every quest needs to have world-ending consequences. Some absolutely do have huge impacts for the characters in the world around you, but sometimes the story you're experiencing is just a very deeply personal one for the characters involved."
Patel also recently mentioned how Avowed was more focused than Skyrim, and was more like a fantasy take on The Outer Worlds. It's currently scheduled to launch Fall 2024 on Xbox Series X|S and as a "Day One" Game Pass release.

I'm really disappointed by the lack of romance options! I could understand The Outer Worlds, considering the tight budget but this has no excuse. Greedfall, a AA game had them meanwhile this, a AAA juggernaut doesn't. Obsidian needs to catch up to modern RPG demands, and leaving out romance isn't going to help sell the product. Rant over, I'm still super excited to play lol!
I'm cautiosly optimistic about this one.
I have major concerns, reservations with this game. I'm not sure if I just set my expectations too high or......I, I don't know.
Everything they've shown seems
"Off kilter"
The combat, the characters, the Ai the hammed up developer walk through.
It all appears hastily glued together
I like the idea of multiple endings but I hardly ever play through multiple endings.
I got the bad ending in New Vegas (legion took over the world) so I am tempted to redo that one. That's what I get for taking a month break from the game and picking a quest at random when I returned. Nothing like getting the quest complete message then a dozen "this settlement hates" you messages.
Looking forward to this and maybe I'll actually play through it more than once.
'More focussed than skyrim'
Shame, that means more linear story telling and the character and lines delivered we've seen in game so far were the worst part, trully abysmal. I was hopeful for an open world experience, where the kind of combat we've seen makes more sense.
If this is pretty linear with some branching story lines, then this looks pretty poor tbh, and my anticipation for this title has fallen much lower. I hope it ends up being much more.
@UndyingInsurgent95 100% agree its why I skipped the Outer Worlds. I will give this a try as it's on Gamepass but Its doubtful it will stick when there are likely to be other big AAA games out at the end of the year.
I think the option to have it is important as its a role playing game.
I think a lot of people will be disappointed with this game based on the initial expectations.
Honestly if I didn’t take advantage of the 3 year gold to ultimate conversion I wouldn’t be touching this at all. But it’s basically free on game pass so might as well kill a weekend with it like I did the Outer Worlds.
I’d love for this to be an amazing game but Obsidian’s output has been disappointing for a while now.
I enjoyed Grounded and Pentiment, so I’ll keep an eye on this, but not including romance options in a choice-based RPG seems a bit poor.
