Yesterday, Larian Studios pushed out a huge update for Baldur's Gate 3 on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, but nothing was mentioned in the patch notes about a fix for the deleted saves issue that's been plaguing the Xbox version so far.
That's because it's apparently a Microsoft problem rather than a developer one, and Larian Studios followed up later in the day to confirm that Team Xbox seems to have identified a fix. As things stand, the plan is for an Xbox system update to be made available on January 16th, and it's seemingly being tested by Xbox Insiders right now.
Things are looking very promising for next week then, and the team at Larian are "optimistic" that players will no longer experience issues after the update goes live, although they haven't been able to independently verify the fix as of yet.
When the update does arrive next Tuesday, you'll be able to activate it by going to the "System" part of the "Settings" menu on your Xbox console. Let's keep our collective fingers crossed that this will finally solve the problem for good!
Have you been holding off with BG3 until this issue is nixed? Let us know down in the comments below.

As soon as its sorted I'll be buying the game it must be a great game
I'm not playing BG3, but will you definitly be able to force it from System Settings? Between me and friends, we've found that Xbox updates seem to roll out across users over quite a long time period, no matter if you try and force it (I'm thinking the new dash, and the Discord integration). It took months from when I saw it was "released" on news sites for all of us to be able to get it, hoping they don't do that with this (more vital) update.
I'm looking forward to seeing this happen! I played a single run of BG3 on my PC that took more than 300 hours. That's one playthrough, not many different ones. With that in mind, I would not want to suffer a save loss of something that big. BG3 is a game where replicating what you had done previously would be nigh on impossible, so losing your save would be extremely problematic and disheartening.
As it happens, I am still awaiting arrival of my physical Xbox version (still gutted Larian did not release a Collector's Edition, though I do at least have a PS5 CE). Not sure when Larian will be dispatching the Deluxe Edition that I have pre-ordered, but hopefully this issue will be well and truly fixed by the time it arrives...
Since it appears to have been an issue on the Microsoft side, I am strongly considering double dipping and getting this game on PC, so that I can play it portably on my ROG Ally when I'm away from home, and on Xbox for (somewhat) better graphics.
About time.
This has only been an issue for, oh, a little over a decade now. Ever since the Xbox One launched and changed they way saves were handled.
If I am thankfully for BG3 for one thing, it is for lighting the fire under Microsoft to fix this
I bought the game but am glad I held off after seeing this issue. Hopefully it's fixed properly so that I can start without worrying.
Microsoft were too busy ‘identifying’ uploads of bewbies and banning accounts rather than saves getting deleted. That’s my theory 😂
Yay at last! Props to Larian and MS for sorting this relatively quickly (considering it was xmas hols).
Almost bought this for myself for Xmas. Now it's gonna be my birthday gift to meeee 😀. Can't wait, loved BG1 and 2.
Anyone remember 'Minsc and his 🐹 Boo' 😆. Good times.
I’m still rather confused at how this is an Xbox problem… Non of my games have save issues. In fact, the only game I can think of that gave me any issues was Hades, it wasn’t really a save issue - it was achievements. They wouldn’t unlock. That was around when the game was on gamepass. Maybe it’s better now, but that was really annoying lol
Anyways, if someone can shed some light on the save data issue, would appreciate it.
I nearly bought this because it looks and sounds SO good, but in the end decided to hold off for when the price drops a bit (and the save game issue helped with that decision too.)
It's also one of those where I'm attracted to it because of how huge it sounds and how many potential options there are, but I'm a pain for hording those games and then never doing them because I either don't give myself enough time to play them properly or I actually feel overwhelmed by the amount of options 🙄 yes, I'm special 🤷😂
Also was this not released physically or am I missing something? I had Amazon credit so kept searching it before I'd decided to wait and I only kept getting the guides showing up in searches? It's obviously in the store online but it seems Amazon have stopped you using credit to buy gift cards etc (don't get me started on that!) In the end I picked up the physical copy of Assassins Creed Mirage in the sale instead for now.
@InfamousOrange This is an issue that stems from the new way Xbox started handling saves starting with the Xbox One.
I've lost multiple saves across multiple games. Hell, I've even lost a save on Starfield recently. But I lost saves as early as Battlefield 4. Also lost saves on Shadow of Mordor, Rare Replay, Halo 5, Quantum Break, and others.
My best guess is an issue with authenticating. If you're connected online it pretty much exclusively uses cloud saves. So if there's a hiccup in the server, it creates a new save which overwrites the previous on file.
Worth mentioning is we're past the days of selecting "New Game" etc generating a save. It is generated the moment the game is started and the hand shake process starts thereafter.
Glad to see it's been identified. I've been waiting for it to go on sale first before I think about getting it anyway.
