Earlier this week, we heard how Baldur's Gate 3 players are suffering with an issue that causes lost progress on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, and it seems this is connected to a bigger problem that's been plaguing cloud saves.
In recent months, we've seen players for the likes of Starfield, Wartales, The Lamplighters League and Football Manager all reporting a similar problem in which their progress is either reverted or deleted entirely on Xbox.
Fortunately, it sounds like the Xbox team is properly addressing this issue — the Baldur's Gate 3 saga seems to have prompted it — and multiple fixes are currently being tested in certain rings of the Xbox Insider program.
Here's how the official Xbox Insider blog describes it:
"Fixes to address an issue that could cause unexpected loss of saved progress in various titles."
So, with any luck, not only will Baldur's Gate 3 players be able to resume their campaigns in the near future without fear of losing progress, but it should help remedy the similar issues in all of these other games as well.
Let's hope that's the case anyway, as the Xbox cloud saving system has become pretty concerning because of this problem lately. Nobody wants to play a game thinking their data might be wiped... this needs to be resolved ASAP.
We'll keep our fingers crossed that the clever folks in the Xbox engineering department have worked their magic!
Have you run into this in anything other than Baldur's Gate 3? Tell us in the comments below.

It is about time. This has been going on for skem years now.
I guess a big profile game like Baldur's Gate 3 having issues with it lit a fire under them.
They should just add the feature again to make a copy of local files (to USB or PC or external HDD, I don't care). I know why they removed it. But you can surely add some form of hash check to only recognize original files, if hacked saves are a concern.
My save files are the most precious data I have in the world. And not being able to archive them is a major concern to me. If they would a least stay on the console forever, that would be a major step forward.
But instead they are deleted from the system after x-amount of other games have been played. It's just stupid. I - again - know why the did it this way, but it's a step backward from how it was on the 360 and EVERY single gaming system before.
I don't think I have Lost any save - I may have, but haven't returned to that game to find out.
I have had numerous 'sync' messages come up and I recall one taking a bit longer than I expected - but that seemed to resolve itself.
I know I'd be gutted if I lost a lot of progress - I know how annoyed I can get if I lose just 30-60mins worth if a Game crashes. It often makes me turn off and go do something else for a while instead of restarting immediately.
Cloud saves makes most sense for Xbox Ecosystem - being able to play on PC and/or Cloud too means that I can play on Cloud whilst on my XB1 in the bedroom, maybe carry on playing on my Laptop/RoG Ally until I can get on the Series X thanks to Cloud saves. It would be a nightmare with 'Local' only saves...
This happened to me with Starfield a 38 hour save file gone and the only one left was from 17 hours in. It made me quit the game and I've not been back to it since.
Thankfully I haven’t had this issue and haven’t lost a save for years, but I remember how soul crushing it can be to lose days of gameplay. Needs to be fixed asap.
@Echtzeit I honestly wasn’t aware they did this. Why is it? Game saves take up so little room comparatively compared to games, or gameplay video recordings, so it’s unlikely to be storage. I assumed all my saves would stay locally unless I deleted them, as well as being backed up in the cloud, Is that wrong?
@BAMozzy I agree cloud integration makes sense as playing across devices is one of the core bonuses of Xbox’s plans and something I use more and more. Like you I’ve had no major issues. A few times an initially worrying message has come up but I’ve never lost data through it. Generally “it just works”
I've not had this issue before thankfully, more the issue with Ubi games stopping syncing saves to their cross save cloud when they're first out (AC Valhalla a bit, Watch Dogs Legion a lot).
Got the system update now so fingers crossed I don't ever see it, as I'd paused playing BG3 to wait for a fix and I'm apparently 80+ hours in Starfield (I really didn't think it was that long but my year review says it is!)
I've had these issues on Wartales, Lamplighter's League, and now Against the Storm. I knew this was an xbox cloud issue the second it happened on both Lamplighter's League and Wartales. It happened around the same time or slightly before Lamplighter's League came out and plagued all games that do not use online only functionality. It started happening after an update to their app IIRC.
I've tried reporting it a few times, even made a reddit thread on it, but the general xbox community didn't believe me.
