We're saddened to report today that Max Payne star James McCaffrey has passed away at the age of 65 following a battle with cancer. The news was reported by TMZ earlier this afternoon.
The outlet mentions McCaffrey "passed away Sunday surrounded by friends and family".
In the gaming world, McCaffrey was best known for playing the role of Max Payne across all three games in the series, and he also appeared in both Alan Wake games, Control and Alone in the Dark. He had a prolific film and TV career as well, including a particularly notable seven-year stint on Rescue Me as Jimmy Keefe.
On behalf of the Pure Xbox team, our thoughts go out to James McCaffrey's family and friends during this difficult time.

WHAT?! Man, not the news I expected to read today.
RIP.
Man, this is incredibly sad. RIP to an absolute Remedy Legend
Wow. One heck of a way to start the day. He provided me many fond memories.
He had such an iconic voice. I recognized it instantly in Alan Wake. Max Payne was so long ago but his tremendous voice burnt itself inside my mind.
Rest in Peace James.
So sad. Rescue Me was an outstanding series, and one that I feel largely went under the radar in the UK.
I have played only the first Alan Wake and Control of those games, and had no idea he was in them. RIP.
James performance in AW2 as Alex Casey? I thought that was Sam Lake? I'm so confused.
I hate cancer, and I hate this.
Thank you for all the great performances Mr. McCaffrey.
@Romans12
James was the voice actor of the characters, Same Lake was the model for Max and Alex
This is so sad. I literally started Alan Wake 2 today and was only thinking what a comfort it was to hear his voice again after all these years. Very poignant his death has been announced on the same day.
@jamescrowx I didn't know that. I played Max Payne 1 and 2 so many times. I thought it was the same guy. Thanks.
Im shocked and really sad he wont be in future Remedy Games. I hope the future Max Payne remake is a good tribute to him
*****... What an iconic voice.
His voice work in Max Payne has left a lasting impression on me and how I view noir. RIP James.
Very sad news. RIP James.
Big loss to a declining industry . You will be sorely missed
@cornholio005
What math are you looking at, the industry in not in a decline in fact it's ending one of it's best years yet. Also as much as I am not a fan of cancer I am not going to act like I knew the name behind the voice of Max Payne
I meant the talentless voice actors
