Update: Ubisoft has since responded to this, calling the mid-game advertisement a "technical error".
You'll find more details in our separate story elsewhere on Pure Xbox:
Original story: It's pretty rare that we see adverts cropping up mid-game in paid releases, but there's clearly one doing the rounds for Assassin's Creed Mirage at the moment, as discovered by numerous Xbox and PlayStation users in recent times.
Xbox fan triddel24 ended up posting some evidence of this to the Xbox One subreddit yesterday, showing that when they tried to enter the map in Assassin's Creed Odyssey, they were first presented with a Black Friday deal for Mirage:
As you might expect, the replies have not been positive whatsoever. Quite a few people have said they would have uninstalled the game immediately after seeing this advert, with commenters calling it an "unacceptable" practice.
We haven't seen anything like this here at Pure Xbox, but there are reports from multiple people who have come across it on Xbox, PlayStation and PC, despite it seemingly being quite rare. We've even noticed a couple of suggestions that it might not be limited to Ubisoft games alone... but there aren't enough details to confirm this yet.
So, we definitely haven't got all the answers about this, and the next step is to find out whether you've personally spotted the ad yourself. If so, what game were you playing when it cropped up? Does this extend beyond Ubisoft games? Is it always an Assassin's Creed Mirage ad? Do you think it's a fair inclusion or are you against it? Tell us!
Let us know your thoughts about all of this down in the comments section below.

That's out of order! Bloody ads are taking over everything
I honestly find it funny the huge over the top outrage by some people ...oh no it pops up for a second and you can instantly close it...end of the world stuff
Nothing surprise me when Ubi.. Darling hold my hand 🎵 'Nothing beats a Jet2Holiday!' presses skip button ...soft are involved.
I don't approve it at all but I find more disturbing the permanent links and banners to DLC content on many games that are not free-to-play. I agree with their complaints but are they really uninstalling a game they paid for because of this? This is why you can't trust what people say on internet.
Not particularly a fan, but who really cares? You can dismiss it straight away. It isn't like an unskippable YouTube advert.
@StylesT you're saying you actually want ads? That's crazyyyyy
That's stupid. But not as stupid as uninstalling the game. These people. 😂
@StylesT We've had this argument before with the COD dashboard ad. I'm not going to rehash it all again. But I suspect most people don't mind ONE ad all that much. But it's the principle, and we know that if there are allowed to get away with this one ad now, then in future it will become more common and will be multiple ads while you play or videos you can't skip. We have seen this in every other form of advertising.
This is going a bit far I think. I know people were riled a while back by the home screen ads and I didn't care about that. Ads popping up while you're playing a game seems a touch much though.
@Lightning720 I stopped watching YouTube because of the ads and I don't watch it enough to justify another subscription. Literally, watching a short video as a walkthrough, there were two unskippable ads every time I moved the progress bar.
@Cherip-the-Ripper Yes that's exactly what I said
@StylesT one person was shocked to his very core 😂
@Banjo- do you not watch TV..its full of them.
Ruins immersion full stop. No respect for their customers.
Unacceptable, as much as I like Assassin's Creed, I would rather not play another Ubisoft game until they stop with this nonsense for good.
@Banjo- people get outraged about anything these days,if they was around for the 80s ,they would all implode
The instant advertisers find a way to beam ads into our brains, we'll be swamped with them every night when we go to sleep.
But yeah, this is incredibly gross.
This is how they get away with disgusting practices. They do just one small little thing like this, that doesn't seem like a big deal, and people don't think much of it. But the company already have the seeds buried, and it grows imperceptibly over time and ruins the entire product. (The rise of egregious monetization being the best example.) This is a paid for experience that already has loathful monetization, putting any other ad is absolutely unacceptable. Do not let these greedy corporations take advantage of you any further
Completely off topic somewhat, but i am not commenting on the Ubisoft ad cause i didn’t buy the game nor do I care for assassin creed games, so i don’t know how i would feel if i seen it. BUT… i will comment again for the 20th time on MS spamming the Ui in add’s and recommendations all over the place. I still find that Ui update to tell me MS doesn’t listen to what we want. I didn’t see anyone asking for that Ui update this summer. They fact Nintendo and Sony has no ad’s in their Ui makes it that much more hard for me to not be upset at the Xbox Ui update. I don’t pay for Ad’s on a premium product.
That is really annoying, at least it was a one button prompt to get off it but still it shouldn't have been there in the first place.
The fact some people are out here defending this scummy invasion of marketing is troubling.
Is it a deal breaker? No. Is it the end of the world? No. But that doesn’t make it acceptable.
@Kienda
I’m with you on that, it’s the fact if you tolerate this ‘one little’ mid game ad then how long until it’s one every 4 hours of gameplay, then every 3 hours and so on. It’s a trash idea and needs to die at its inception.
If I pay for a game I want an experience without adds. EA and 2K have started a very bad trend
That is truly awful🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
We are so used to not having to put up with adverts any more that when we do we over react it seems. These companies have to force these things down our throat in some way. A quick button press to get rid is fine. If we have to start sitting through a video ad then burn your console or sacrifice it to the God's or whatever. For now just press the cancel button and move on.
Ads are stupid in games as anyone playing Origins will obviously know there are other AC games … however if it was an outrageously big exclusive discount I would shut my claptrap….
ubi wants more hate? im interested in ac red and star wars outlaws but i couldn't care less if ubi crash n burn.
@Kaloudz so it’s gone from ADs, > Dashboard Ad > turn console on AD > Mid game AD.
You really don’t think it’s going to get worse?! Huh sure many said that when it appeared on the dashboard, then again when it appeared on start up.
Before long it will be ‘ it’s only a 3minute Ad’.
Just like microtransactions have never got worse from the horse armour.
Well that confirms that I'll never buy another Unisoft game.
One more reason to never buy a Ubisoft game.
'Welcome to our Grand Live Service Future!', feature. I found it pretty funny when Sony went out of their way to announce their new emphasis on Live Service. Meanwhile Xbox never stopped and bought the King of Live service with Acti-Blizz-King. Much as I love a good, self-contained, single player story game...they are going to be increasingly rare as time goes on.
@Maddie47 I hope that one second add that is immediately closable doesn't give you to many sleepless nights...
The internet has turned 'certain people' into humongous entitled cry babies who just love to find things to be outraged about...just love the wording they usually use aswell over such trivial things..you would think murders had been commited lmao....
I could understand more annoyance if this was on par with youtube adds etc
P.s My series X hasn't been turned on since I had an advert onit lmfao..got to love these people
I am amazed the number of clowns, even just in these comments, that are supporting this disgusting practice. I quit TV because of ads. This was the last straw for Ubisoft though. Never buying another Ubisoft game. So good job on that one. Thankfully that's not too bad a loss as they've not put out a good game in years.
That said, I'm not paying premium price to have an ad thrown at me, in fact I pay premium price for the exact opposite. 🤦
I thought Mirage was fine and all, and I’ve recommended it to others, but yeah, I’ll stop recommending or buying games from companies that indulge in this practice, as I personally feel that it is a disgusting practice. Games are an art of immersion and nothing breaks that more than an ad. Does the industry not realize that so many people have dropped regular TV service to avoid ads? I dunno. I go at lengths to avoid ads, personally.
@HonestHick I agree with you but I think that because of Game Pass, the UI looks like a video streaming service now. At least, recently played games are still above and they added shortcuts at the top. It also has the best way to organise and browse collections and groups. It's just the front page that looks like Netflix or Prime Video... purposefully.
@Cherip-the-Ripper bro whats going on with you, go get some help, not everything work straight up there.🙃
You have to complain now before it gets out of hand
Well, I'm glad I saw this before buying the game. No sale from me.
Big companies treating their customers like chumps again. The chumps defending the practice again...
I give up.
@StylesT I remember the Internet before it became an ad infested shopping mall.
We took the greatest knowledge sharing medium ever invented, then ruined it with greed.
Then you defend it.
@robe Guess it's hard to distinguish between somebody defending something and someone simply recognising this isn't a big deal atall
Makes me wonder how you people cope with real problems
I think people playing this down are missing the point. It's simply not part of the gaming experience. Yes, it's instantly skippable but being compliant to this sort of tasteless greed is exactly why incomplete games and DLC has become the industry norm. I won't personally lose sleep over the issue, but it's definitely one of those things that makes me think not having as much time to game the older I get isn't such a bad thing... But as for people trying to justify it by saying stuff like "it's money they can invest back into the games" - get real! The fat cats at Ubisoft etc care first for lining their pockets, and the quality of their games second.
@StylesT
It sets a precedent. People shrug when it's one ad for a second only once. Then they shrug when it's two ads. Then three. Then three that you have to wait 5 seconds to close. Then four that you have to wait 30 seconds to close. Then you need to wait a full minute every 30 minutes. Luckily there will be a fix where you can pay a one time fee to disable ads forever. At that point they fixed a problem they created and people will see it as the norm.
The thing is that many of us can recognize when someone is slowly turning up the water to boil us alive and would rather not give them an inch lest they feel they can instead take a mile.
@Enigk since you're okay with it all of this, would you be willing to watch all of our ads for us so we don't have to?
I honestly try to avoid Ubisoft games as much as possible. This does not surprise me in the least.
@ZYDIO Games are ads in themselves these days with all the skins you can get. I don't have a problem with a screen that I can cancel off in a second and doesn't appear all the time. I would prefer it if it wasn't there but I'm not going to lose sleep over it. Forcing me to watch a video ad would be a big no though.
I used to hate watching TV as every 15 minutes you get the same adverts. I couldn't tell you the last advert I watched as I don't watch broadcast TV anymore to avoid them.
@StylesT that's not the point though. It's an intrusive ad that we didn't ask for. If XboX was a free service then fine throw some ads in there. But it's like paying for top tier Netflix and halfway through a movie an ad pops up. Not the end of the world you're right, but darn annoying when you pay for a service w/o ads.
I did get this ad btw, also while playing AC Odyssey. I was in the middle of a mission, opened my map and bam. My world didn't end but it sure broke the immersion.
@Enigk and what happens when they put an ad on bootup, then on dashboard, then on game start, and then mid-game and for good measure an ad when you quit. I don't wanna do like 10 cancels when all I want to do is have a quick 5mins in a game. We don't watch TV for the same reason. If I want to buy something I reckon my brain can direct me down the right path.
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
That’s a no from me.
Just out of curiosity, could this in fact be illegal? I mean I don't know, and local laws change from place to place. But Google has(?) to tell if a game contains add before you purchase it. Did the Xbox/PlayStation stores do the same?
@Banjo- yeah thats a great point and for sure what they were going for. But i think it’s ugly, waste of resources and just not in touch with what hardcore gamers want and thats with us being on GP. Let the GP and Store app guide us to all that and not the Ui. Sorry not trying to be rude or bullish on this but i just can’t stand that direction to the Ui. The Home Screen got miles better in my opinion but i can’t understand have the ad’s there also and why 2 places for the MS store? They were so close to getting that Ui update right and just missed it for a subscription type layout that just hurts the experience in my book.
I'm going to guess this wasn't included in the original terms of service of the game that the ads are showing on. This could be a violation of the contact and lead to lawsuits. This is also altering the software beyond updating it to fix bugs and add content, so there may be legal issues with that as well.
@StylesT You're not supposed to lick any part of the boot, let alone the whole boot.
Greedy corporations.
@HonestHick I just wanted to mention what they are trying to do, but I agree with you. I like the simple shortcuts at the top and being able to organise my collections and how games are sorted. I don't like the front, full of Game Pass suggestions and banners that remind me that my friends are ahead of me when I don't care about achievements.
The only situation when this would be acceptable for me is when you first launch the game, and it would need to be a one-time thing. A full-screen advert during actual gameplay in a premium paid game is unacceptable, I can’t cheer for this.
@Banjo- yeah I agree with you, i think you did a great job of explaining that approach they took. Still wish it was able to be removed. But i don’t see that happening anytime soon.
Keep them to the F2P games but keep them out of games you have purchased and that's good. We already have them in game menus when you load up a game and that is fair enough but not ingame.

@DirtDragon You should write to your mp about this injustice of a click of a button and it's gone ad...sure they will have plenty of time for this most serious of injustices
The fact you keep labeling everyone casuals tells me all I need to know tbh lmao ...god forbid you ever have to deal with the problems of the real world ...you will have a full mental break
@DirtDragon do you have stroke when you run out of toilet paper ?...didn't think people still said boomer...thought it had died out like wasssup
@DirtDragon Sadly I am not a boomer and have a few more years before I leave this planet. I'm working on it though with an unealthy diet. Fingers crossed for that heart disease soon.
Would I like a world without adverts? Yes. Is that ever going to happen? Not unless I go and live off the grid.
Adverts are everywhere. On most people's clothing, in games via skins, on the sides of cars, all over social media. This was one of the least egregious forms of advertising in my opinion. If this is one of the worst for you then fair enough but some of the reactions were a little over the top.
@StylesT Just redditors being redditors
Friendly reminder to please report any troll accounts/comments as this will alert myself and the rest of the mods so we can deal with them
Thanks & have a great weekend everyone 💚
