Unreal Engine 5 has been one of the most prominent game engines of the current generation so far, with Epic's well-known toolset powering lots of recent AAA titles. While some projects, such as The Matrix Awakens, have been impressive - some have failed to deliver on what we'd expect from a 'next-gen' title. And so, the team at Digital Foundry has analysed the engine's 'mixed' results so far.
As part of a new analysis from the tech-focused team, DF has looked at five fully-UE5 powered titles including the likes of Robocop: Rogue City, Immortals of Aveum and more. You can check out the video version of this up above, but if you want a quick snapshot of what the outlet thinks of the engine's console performance so far, here's a brief summary of the analysis:
"Ultimately, I think we are seeing some mostly positive indications from UE5 in console games. The core graphical tech clearly scales well to console hardware, delivering some really impressive visual results in problem areas for real-time rendering. A game like Robocop is delivering top-tier console visuals with the help of UE5, for instance. On the performance front, some games do struggle, though in some cases this seems to be more at the hands of the developer than the UE5 tools."
Talking of performance - that's an area Immortals of Aveum struggled with back in August. Thankfully, the team has been diligent with post-launch updates, but EA's new shooter was rough at launch - proving that in certain circumstances UE5 does need work on consoles.
From our perspective, we're a little disappointed that the engine hasn't quite matched up to what was teased in those early tech demos - and in The Matrix Awakens. Hopefully in the hands of an experienced team, such as Xbox's The Coalition, we'll start to see some more consistent results from Epic's latest game engine.
