Gears developer The Coalition is back again today with another Unreal Engine 5 tech demo for us to drool over, this time focusing on a cinematic scene called "The Cavern", and as usual it looks absolutely stunning in action.
You can check out the tech demo above (it starts at 0:47 in the video) which "shows how movie quality assets – featuring tens of millions of polygons – can be rendered in real-time, a massive 100x leap forward in graphic detail."
In an interview with Xbox Wire, Studio Technical Director Kate Rayner spoke a little bit more about The Coalition's work with Unreal Engine 5, revealing that the team have been working with the new engine for over a year now. In regards to "The Cavern" specifically, here's a bit of what she had to say:
"A couple things we’re really proud of are the facial animations and just the overall quality of the character model.
The coolest part is that we’ve got all these great visuals and animations running on an Xbox Series X, so that just gives you an idea of the visual fidelity and quality we’re going to be able to create. Demos like this allow us to learn a great deal about the performance of UE5, and I think it’s safe to say that we’re going to be able to create some pretty incredible things with this new tech."
The Coalition officially announced that it had shifted to Unreal Engine 5 for next-gen development back in May of last year, and we've seen numerous tech demos since then, including the studio's work on The Matrix Awakens. For now though, the team still says they're still "not ready to talk about our next game." The wait continues!
What do you make of this new tech demo from The Coalition? Let us know down below.

Looks awesome. Hopefully they’re working on a new IP. I’ve never liked Gears, but I’d be willing to try something new that they make if it’s got an intriguing premise.
@Rural-Bandit
You beat me to it, bring on Gears 6, can’t wait.
@Rural-Bandit
Hivebusters was very graphically amazing in places.
@Dezzy70 I was amazed by how good it managed to look in splitscreen mode. Don't think I even bothered playing it without but truly props to them.
I would actually like them to make a new IP
The more realistic a game looks, the less realistic it feels when the A.I. and interactivity are still stuck in 2004. It's like those videos where people reenact GTA in real life. Can we pleeeease get NPCs and enemies that aren't painfully stupid, predictable, and instantly immersion-breaking, and environments that at least have Crysis 2007 levels of destruction?
Can’t wait to see what the Coalition are able to achieve with UE5 - Gears 5 and hive busters are still stunning now and play great - easily the best Xbox shooters for me. My only worry is the frame rate on the Matrix demo - as impressive as it was there wasn’t much gameplay (only a demo after all) but the 30fps was jarring. 60fps is one of the main elements that makes Gears great to play - I hope the Coalition continue with this whatever their next game turns out to be 😊
Cool the Coalition are picking up and continuing The Order: 1886 /jk (Black bars, character and cinematic design very similar to that game)
More seriously this looks lovely but does make me wish the super talented devs at The Coalition were working on anything else but Gears 6.
Test asset do not represent game product, cinematic visuals test. So not what the actual game will look like then?
that look insane visually , when our xbox series struggle with games at 60 fps or ray tracing to give us proper options to customise our experience like on pc a solid antialiasing, a solid antiblur i'm kind of sketical about it, let's see what the future hold don't eat the chicken before it is well cook let's say.
Gears 5 and Hive Buster DLC were awesome. But take your time with Gears 6. Don't rush it out because some fans can be impatient. I'd rather wait for a masterpiece than snatch up an incomplete dumpster fire that will need a number of patches to make it playable and still end up flopping.
