The team at Capcom delivered an official launch date and some more juicy details on Dragon's Dogma 2 yesterday, but one unfortunate bit of news has surfaced since. After considering the bump just a few months ago, the Japanese company has decided to raise its game prices - starting with Dragon's Dogma 2.
The next-gen-only title is now up for pre-order on Xbox, and yep, it's $70. This is the first time Capcom has jumped up from the old standard of $60; a price the company stuck to with March's release of Resident Evil 4 Remake - although that was a cross-gen release on PlayStation at least.
This new $70 price point is definitely the new standard at this point. PlayStation, Xbox, 2K, EA, Activision and many more have adopted the new price point for AAA games since the start of this generation, and it's looking like it's here to stay.
One welcome caveat here is that for Dragon's Dogma 2, Capcom has appropriately converted the price here in the UK. Where most publishers tend to go with $70/£70, Dragon's Dogma 2 is currently listed at £61.99 in the UK. It's not much of a difference, but it's something of a silver lining for UK fans!

Good on them for treating the UK pricing fairly. It's something I guess.
Any game over £50 at launch certainly affects my chances of day 1 purchasing. In fact it probably reduces my chance of playing Day 1, even month 1 to Zero.
The fact is that Games will drop in price and 'day 1' is when they cost the most - just because they are 'new' and relying on FOMO and Hype to maximise profit margins. Games may 'look' prettier on 'newer' hardware, but aren't offering 'better' stories, game-play etc than we had 10yrs+ ago - games like Dead Space, BioShock or Mass Effect for example.
As such, I can wait for games like Dragon's Dogma 2 to drop in price as I have thousands of other games I can play - all those in my Backlog, all those offered in Sales/Subscription services etc. I'd rather play games I have or can pick up in a sale than buy a Game day 1 these days - especially as the 'Day 1' experience is also when the game is often at its weakest/worst and/or missing features/content that will get patched and/or finished post launch...
I would probably wait for a price drop normally, but Dragons Dogma 2 is a game I have wanted for ages so am going to be weak and still buy day one…
And on the other side of the coin it's €75/$95 CAD
The lower UK-price is odd. Have Capcom forgotten that the standard USA price tag of $70 does not include tax?
Honestly the price increase doesn't effect me at all. 90% of games release in bad shape and take a few weeks or months of patches before they become good. I'd rather wait a while and end up spending less on a game that plays better.
i have to really want a game to pay more than $20. maybe, just maybe star wars outlaws.
Eh, I can always wait on a sale. The first one was fun enough but I don't need to rush out day 1.
Luckily like many others, Capcom's Steam prices are lower than consoles and £53.98, whilst a bit weird, is still a good price
I bought Dragon’s Dogma 1 for £4.20 a few months back. Great game.
I’ll be playing this when it’s under £20, all patched up and has DLC.
@BAMozzy I couldn't have said it better myself.
Did you have to go and point out the 'cheaper' price in the UK, @Kezelpaso? You just know that it was a mistake that will now be amended. They'll probably bump it up to over £70 now too, just to recoup any monies already spent on the 'cheaper' UK copies... 🤣
The main reason that I still like to buy Day One games is to get the pre-order incentives. Some times they're worth it, more often than not they aren't. It's a bad habit that I'd like to break, but I simply have no will power... 😂
@BAMozzy Completely agree. Though it's the last point that makes me most wary of buying games day 1. Too many buggy or completely unfinished games released only to be patched for months, or even years. If that is how they want to treat Day 1 buyers then I will wait.
While I don't want the price hike, the cost of game development has gone up exponentially, so I don't mind the price hike as much as some.
Dragons Dogma was a niche game.
This seems like an almost guaranteed way to be sure it is even more niche.
As excited as I was, guess I'll be waiting for a decent price drop. As is my practice with any game that launches like this.
@BAMozzy Which is why Game Pass is the gift that keeps on giving. The more games on Game Pass for me the easier on the ol' wallet.
Otherwise, I will absolutely wait for a price drop.
£70 you say… suddenly feel my gaming backlog calling.
@Kaloudz it' Game Pass's fault i heard.
You have to remember that this affects discounted digital sales. For example 50% of a £70 is £35 instead of the old £30….
@TanaDax Exactly, let the game cool off until you get it for a bargain on sale, same game with all the bugs fixed for a fraction of the cost.
A lot of people didn’t grow up with games in the 80s and 90s, or don’t remember, when the MSRP on a game was truly just a suggestion to retailers. You can find scans of Toys R Us or Babbages selling stuff like Killer Instinct for $85+. That has to be equal to $100+ in today’s economy.
Not saying $70 is great, but it could be much worse!
I will never pay £60 for a new videogame. ESPECIALLY not a digital version I can't even borrow or sell to someone.
I can wait for it to go 40%+ off.
70 plus the cost of the obligatory season pass most big games tend to launch with. But it's not that huge a hike considering inflation in general, and I very rarely buy new releases, so for it's meh
@Kaloudz indeed, and I see they have a bundle of games for December as well.
The gift that keeps on giving!
Removed - disrespecting others
I am super excited for this but in Canada it's 89.99 just for the base version. I will wait until it goes on sale.
