Update: And that's the end of that! Microsoft has removed the mention of Octopath Traveler 2 coming to Xbox Game Pass in 2024, explaining that it was added in error. Here's the statement:
"Editor’s Note: We’ve removed the mention of Octopath Traveler II coming to Xbox Game Pass which was included in error. Octopath Traveler II will arrive on Xbox platforms in 2024."
Original story: During Tokyo Game Show 2023, it was revealed that Octopath Traveler 2 was officially coming to Xbox after skipping Microsoft's console at launch. During the team's broadcast it was simply confirmed for the platform, however a new Xbox Wire post seems to suggest that the Square Enix JRPG is heading to Game Pass as well.
In a wide-ranging interview with Microsoft's Sarah Bond, Xbox Wire Japan spoke about some upcoming Japanese titles heading to Game Pass, and it mentioned two in particular - Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name and Octopath Traveler 2. Here's how the full question was worded by the Japanese branch of Xbox Wire:
"Fans are fascinated that titles like Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name and Octopath Traveler 2 will soon be a part of Xbox Game Pass. Since last year, there has been an impression that more Japanese games have been making their way onto Xbox and Xbox Game Pass. Is this the result of the commitment you and your team have been expressing towards the region?"
In her response, Bond didn't name Octopath Traveler 2 (she largely spoke about Yakuza), but the Xbox exec didn't correct the interviewer either - or deny the game's inclusion in the service for that matter.
So... we're a bit puzzled by this one to be honest! We wouldn't say this confirms Octopath Traveler 2's Game Pass arrival, but it gets very close considering the Q&A is from an official Xbox source. We'll have to hold out for more information on whether this JRPG is coming to the library at launch in early 2024.
