Quick Resume was heavily touted as one of the top Xbox Series X|S features as we headed into this generation, and on the whole it's worked pretty well so far. The option — which allows users to suspend games and resume them right where they left off — seems a great fit for single-player adventures like Starfield, however, players are reporting mixed results with the Bethesda RPG so far.
We spotted some discussion about this over on Reddit, where initially, a popular post seemed to praise the feature working in tandem with Starfield. However, a fair few replies to that thread have since reported issues when using Quick Resume and Starfield.
Over on Twitter, we're seeing similar reports. Windows Central's Jez Corden seemed to run into crashing issues after finishing the game and making a new character - which he thinks has been sorted out by switching off Quick Resume:
Of course, not everyone is having such problems and plenty of replies to that initial Reddit thread throw praise at the feature. However, if you want to avoid potential issues like these, it might be worth turning off Quick Resume for the time being. We'll drop a quick guide down below for how to switch off the feature on Xbox Series X|S.

I had a bug where after starting from quick resume it lagged like crazy for 30s to 1min but then it went ok after it.
I’ve had the game crash a few time when using fast travel in new Atlantis and one or two loading screens that took a little longer than normal when jumping from a big city to a big city. Apart from that, everything else has been perfectly smooth and I’ve had the game on quick resume since early access started!
I usually have problems with Quick Resume. Sometimes the games just don't start (black screen), sometimes it glitches Achievements for a few or several minutes. And does it work if you use two different accounts? I remember having problems with that too.
It's still really cool and useful tho. With a few fixes it would be perfect.
Edit: I don't mean the same quick resume for the two accounts, but different "states" I guess.
Yeaaaa. I immediately disabled it after I watched my girlfriend lose several hours of progress on Starfield due to it.
I should honestly just disabled it all together as it seems to cause more issues than it is worth. From messing up achievements to time tracking. Even had it cause audio desync
Never mind the online games that take longer to reconnect from instant resume than they do from just restarting the game.
The SSD is honestly fast enough that it kind of makes instant resume moot.
All my crashes so far seem to be after leaving the game on quick resume I've had mixed results with quick resume in general some games it works great others it doesn't work at all.
Quick resume hasn't worked for me in ages. Everytime I turn off the console by the switch. Turn it back on, quick resume isn't there. It used to work before when I first got the console.
I've played Daily for the past 5-6 days and only played Starfield. As soon as my console has booted up, I have jumped straight into Starfield with Quick Resume, played until I have to stop, turned off Console and repeated the next chance - not jumping between other 'Quick Resume' games or other games in general and so far, its been reliable and not posed any issue for 'me'. I also fully shut my Console down (not some 'sleep' mode) too.
Whether I have been 'lucky' or maybe the fact that I fully shut down my console and not jumping between several games at a time, maybe haven't played 'enough' either, but thus far, its worked for me. Now I've said that, its going to be an issue for me LOL
"Im playing on 12 hr intervals"
Not to sound like a killjoy, but I think playing 12 hours per day is a bigger issue than Quick Resume bugging out. 🤷♂️
On topic: I keep forgetting Quick Resume exists. I have trust issues with it, so I prefer a fresh game boot.
Wow, didn’t realize Quick Resume was this buggy for people. Never had an issue with it.
I have had only had one so far. Controller rumble didn’t work until I closed the game and opened it back up again. Although I do tend to find the game runs a bit better overall if I close it down first.
I've not had an issue with quick resume yet, in fact it's been a godsend. To be able to jump back in straight away is just an amazing quality-of-life thing to have, but to be on the safe side I do action a quicksave before quitting.
I flick quicksave between Starfield and Slay the Spire.
Tip: anytime you switch on your xbox, wait until you are connected to the Internet first before opening a game. I've noticed that doing this before you are connected messes up the quick resume. A good indicator that you are connected to the Internet is, when you have 2 boxes at your uppermost dashboard then you are not yet connected, and when the dashboard fills up with more than the 2 boxes at the top, then you are connected.
Mine has been off since day 1. Just another thing that can go wrong. Rule #1 of gaming: SAVE OFTEN!
I must be lucky because I’ve had no issues with QR and Starfield. I’ve used QR almost every day since early access launch and haven’t had any crashes, audio bugs etc.
Never been able to use Quick Resume reliably and therefore I don't use it. It's basically an extra step, a thing I have to disable, instead of a useful feature. But I'm happy for people with different experiences.
Is anyone having an issue with their controller turning itself off continuously? Charged the battery fully but still happens. I’ve played other game with no issue at all. It’s starting to irk me
@Balta666 I've had that with quick resume on a lot of games
This is the first game since series x launch that I'm actually using the feature and it's been great so far.
@Dan1283 can't say the same. Generally, in my experience, quick resume works flawless 90% of the games and the other 10% simple does not work and boot the game at the start.
Wonder if that is playing in with the audio issue? I've turned voice up. Unless character directly in front of me the voice is sooooooo distant and difficult to hear
5 tips
1. You get 2 quick resume pins - use them. If you don't QR will only hold the last 4-5 games you have played and some older ones can drop out.
2. The QR will always boot out if you play the game on another console, PC or via cloud and also for updates.
3. Save often and always save before you exit the game via QR.
4. Esp for Statfield, it hordes saves as it autosaves freqently. This makes loading times get slower the longer you are into the game. you should delete all but the top 3 saves which speeds up loading later into the game. Your latest save will also be uploaded to the cloud.
5. If QR is not working for you at all it's time to reformat your SSD/RAM via settings
