The team behind the amazing Quake and Quake 2 remasters, Nightdive Studios, has announced two more upcoming remasters for us to look forward to on Xbox in the form of Star Wars: Dark Forces and Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion!
Both of these will be making their Xbox debuts, with Dark Forces only ever releasing on PC and PlayStation in the past, while Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion was a Nintendo 64 exclusive. Each game will include support for up to 4K at 120FPS, packed with a bunch of visual improvements along with various other modern features.
In terms of release dates, we don't have one for Star Wars: Dark Forces yet (other than "coming soon"), but Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion is confirmed to be hitting Xbox One, Series X and Series S on November 17th, 2023.
We'll throw more details about each game down below.
Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster (Coming Soon)
"Created in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games and fully remastered through our KEX engine, Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster supports up to 4K at 120FPS and features advanced 3D rendering, modern gamepad support, trophies and achievements, and more!"
Turok 3: Shadow Of Oblivion Remastered (November 17)
"Turok 3 Shadow of Oblivion Remastered is a faithful restoration of the classic first-person shooter originally released in 2000 for the Nintendo 64, upgraded through Nightdive Studios’ proprietary KEX Engine for play on modern gaming devices with up to a 4K resolution at 120FPS.
It joins Nightdive Studios, Universal Games, and Digital Platforms’ popular Turok and Turok 2: Seeds of Evil remasters, capping off the trilogy. Turok 3 Shadow of Oblivion Remastered features upgraded gameplay, high-resolution textures, enhanced lighting and rendering, and support for console gamepads with platform-specific features."

Fantastic news! Straight off the back of their glorious Quake 2 port as well! I'm buying Day 1 for both. Very happy to be paying a little more to support a developer taking such care with classic titles.
Sounds like Dark Forces will use the Roland SC-88 version of the music (which is a great thing). I'm all in on that one.
Probably the only criticism I have with that game is that game maps sometimes don't make sense and you can spend a ton of time being lost. I know some people had that complaint about Quake II, but Dark Forces is much worse in that aspect!
I wonder if Nightdive will incorporate a compass feature for this game as well. 🤔
Oh man! Dark Forces, spent so much time back in the day on that one. The comment about the maps is fair; although in perspective now, I kinda liked that it wasn't obvious many times how to progress. Remember getting stuck a couple of times. now, only that now there will be walkthroughs everywhere for that. Still, fair point.
Would rather see Jedi Knight reboot than 'remaster' of DOS game
Really wishing it was Turok 2: Seeds of Evil! First game I ever really got obsessed with. But still great to see more game’s getting a second run
Dark Forces is honestly some of the more exciting news to me. Just a couple more games and you'll be able to play the entire Jedi Knight series on Xbox.
It'd be great to play Dark Forces again after all these years, and on the Xbox as well. I'll keep a good eye out for the release day.
Couldn’t have got the timing better if I tried. Had a blast through Turok 2 last week, and afterwards did a search to see if there was any chance of 3 getting remastered. Nothing was confirmed but there where rumours, so I went out and got Turok Evolution and the 360 Turok reboot.
Nightdive continuing to keep it real.
Always wanted to play Star Wars Dark Forces and looks absolutely fantastic so I’d be up for playing that for sure.
@Kaloudz thanks heaps didn’t even know! Hopefully holds up alright these days
I’d love a Nightdive remaster of Half Life 2. I know it’s backwards compatible and 4K, but some improved textures, etc and a 60/120fps upgrade would be awesome.
phil needs to buy this developer, gp needs this. and they need to remaster the old medal of honor games.
Well.. I started to play video games in the 80ies...
I'm sorry but I'm not a big nostalgic about "quick cash grab remake / remastered" of old 90ies games... They are UGLY, most of the time !
And since studios want to target guys from my "old" generation, i say NO !! I'm not sure millennials will try those games : they look "cheap"....
