Rockstar's new Red Dead Redemption port has officially landed on PlayStation 4, which means we finally have some footage of that version to compare to the Xbox backwards compatible edition. In short, every release looks pretty similar here, and we have no issues sticking to the old 360 version on Xbox.
Up above, you can watch a fairly comprehensive breakdown looking at each version of Rockstar's Western classic. We can't tell much difference at all between the top-of-the-line Xbox and PlayStation versions - they both have certain scenes where things tilt in their favour but overall they're both very comparable. The clip also shows the older versions and Nintendo's Switch edition as well.
It's fair to say that Rockstar's announcement of this port has been shrouded in controversy from the get-go, especially given the price point and the lack of meaningful upgrades over the existing Xbox copy. The good news of course is that here on Xbox, we don't need to fork out for that new version!
We'd love to see a more enhanced edition of this classic one day, but alas, it's looking like this will be how things stand with RDR for the foreseeable future.
Are you happy with how the Xbox version is holding up here? Let us know your thoughts on this comparison down below!

Not surprising since the ps4 and switch versions are ports, not remasters, while the XSX BC version is closer to a semi remaster.
Man. The first half of the video is gushing about how much better the game is on PS5 compared to a 360 game running on back compat. I’m actually surprised they mentioned the price at the end as a negative.
The Xbox versions look better because of the hardware. They have always had the dominant hardware. And now, they have dominant everything else. Lol.
@Romans12 Dominant hardware? Such a strange perspective when Xbox hasn't outsold PlayStation in a single generation. Even PS3 eventually overtook the 360. If you're talking purely about performance the differences are that negligible that calling it dominant is laughable. Also the video above is comparing the Xbox One X to the base PS4 instead of the PS4 Pro so not even a fair comparison.
@Kevw2006 Most of your points are against the developer, not Microsoft. As it stands, the Xbox version is the cheapest, and superior version due exclusively to the innovation Microsoft has implemented with the backwards compatibility program.
You can say what you like, but it is factual that Microsoft has launched superior hardware since the Xbox One X.
@PopularCorpse None of the points in my post have anything to do with the developer at all. Unless Rockstar are somehow mysteriously responsible for hardware sales and console power and also made the comparison video from the article.
My points aren't aven against Microsoft either for a matter of fact.
I never disputed that Xbox had released more powerful consoles, I just said that the difference was so negligible that you could hardly call it dominant. Also note more powerful and superior are two different things, more powerful is factual but superior is a matter of opinion.
@XboxTheBestBox Things may change in the near future, since they're not actively pursuing BWC anymore, at least not publicly.
@XboxTheBestBox That will depend on if Microsoft feel they have got enough return from the investment that have already put into it and whether enough people are making use of backwards compatibility to make it worth their while. They aren't going to put a great deal of effort into it if say less than 5% of their user base are actually making any use of it.
@XboxTheBestBox It's because of the diminished state that they went so heavy on the b/c to try and give Xbox another selling point. If they decide it hasn't been successful or worth it then they'll drop any further investment in it. Microsoft are a business and they are only going to put any further effort into it if they feel like they're getting something out of it.
@XboxTheBestBox
Quick resume and Auto-HDR has nothing to do with BWC.
Unless you missed it, there won't be any more updates this generation. Will that always be the case? Hopefully not (my personal guess is no), and hopefully BWC will improve with Xbox 5th gen, but don't just blindly assume it's set in stone.
We're also about to lose a number of XB360 games next year when the 360 store shuts down. That's not a win for game preservation. If it wasn't released on disc, and it doesn't work on the modern Xbox store, then bye-bye to those games. 👋
These companies will do what's best for themselves, not us, at the end of the day.
@XboxTheBestBox Slight visual upgrades are nice, sure, as are frame rate boosts, but no, the concept of BWC existed long before HDR was a thing.
And again, quick resume reduces loading times....and then... ? It has nothing to do with the concept of BWC.
I gave a substantive example of some Xbox games being lost in 2024 with the 360 store closure, and you chose to highlight HDR and Load times...
@Kevw2006 Made a valid, concurring point. I think my work here too is done. As I suggested, don't assume.
@XboxTheBestBox yes it is and they get most my money for it. I'm sick of comparisons to honestly. As a owner of all of em I can see them firsthand. Yes Sonys 1st party titles look great but ummm so does Xboxs. 3rd party games are identical and any difference you would never notice on normal terms. I actually find most games run better (not necessarily looks) on Xbox so digital foundry be damned. Point is I buy any game I can on Xbox (3rd party) and obviously any game I can't on PS. I'm even waiting on Balder's Gate if I play it at all as I don't appreciate what they did but that's another story and article. Better online, service better community and a great way to play older games at higher Framerates and HDR without waiting on a company to charge you full price for a buggy remaster that barley looks different and somehow breaks the game. Also they gave us a beastly way to play retro games (I'm sure some of you know) I like it better then on PC somehow.
@EVIL-C Of course things are going to change they don't want to overload the backend. Some games will be lost that's a given. As for completely doing a 180 and giving up on B/C, it is a reality. That is also a reality where people give up on a brand so I don't think it'll be such a easy decision. They may take a break on it they may not hype it up so much now that they have actual games to talk about. But I'm comfortable albeit not positive they won't give up on it. Phil would have to not want his job or any respect to make a stupid decision such as that. I have 5 boxes (kid you not) of Xbox 360 games. I install them as I need them and love Xbox for that. It is a selling point, and whoever said 5% of the community let's say that's even accurate. Id argue that's the 5% (likely more) who are like me and are heavily invested into the brand/hobby. Retro gaming has made a big comeback I've had some insane offers for my collection I have on Facebook from the younger guys. So yes it's possible they just throw up they're hands and give up on something they are proud of but it's nonsensical. That said you may end up correct in your evaluation God knows companies have done dumber things. They will however lose something from that decision though. PlayStation at least shows no Interest in it so it's expected where as Xbox has built it's brand on it.
@Fragslayer
What did they do with Baldur's gate 3 that make you not wanna play it?
@Kevw2006
SUPERIOR
: one that surpasses another in quality or merit
: of higher rank, quality, or importance
in other words...not an opinion
@aredde2203 I'm well aware of what the word means thanks but you've missed the point of what I was saying. I was responding to a poster that was claiming that the Xbox version was superior when it's highly likely they haven't even played both versions to be able to make a fair assessment on that.

Have they?
So have they really always had the dominant hardware? Dubious.
I would have preferred to see a comparison of the ps4 running on the ps5 via backcompatibility vs the xbox 360 running on the series X, but ok.
@themightyant I think the Xbox series x has the more powerful hardware. But since developers target PS5 because the have the largest market share, games look the same or even slightly better in the PS5
@Casco agreed! But I think they are close enough to make little difference to anyone but platform warriors. We certainly haven’t seen any first party Xbox Series X games that look significantly better yet unlike PS3 and PS4 but perhaps like the former it will come later in the generation.
really a phenomenal comparison video. Great job. What surprising me the most is how good the switch version looks. A definite buy for me when it goes on a 50% discount
