If you ever need a good example of an underappreciated game, Immortals Fenyx Rising might be it! Launching back at the start of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S generation, Ubisoft's open world adventure didn't get a whole lot of fanfare when it arrived, but it eventually ended up becoming a low-key hit on Xbox Game Pass.
Unfortunately, it sounds like we won't be getting a sequel — at least not anytime soon — as VGC is reporting that a follow-up game was in development and then cancelled earlier this month at Ubisoft Quebec.
According to VGC's sources, the reason for the cancellation was due to "perceived challenges around establishing the IP", with the outlet also noting that although the game found a "modest audience", a lot of sales came via discounting.
Nevertheless, the news comes as a disappointment, especially considering Pure Xbox members voted Immortals Fenyx Rising as the best Xbox Game Pass addition of August 2022 - and therefore one of the best of the entire year.
If you haven't played it yet, we highly recommend doing so - it's also part of Xbox Cloud Gaming!

I really enjoyed this game I know it was a zelda clone but I was a good game shame they aren't making a second one
Such bad news. It was one of my fave new IPs
It was a fantastic game, but Im afraid the dlc ably demonstrated that they wouldnt manage to repeat that.
I loved the main game and spent a long time in that world enjoying the humour interesting puzzles and setting.
Its rare for me to buy dlc, but I enjoyed the game so much I jumped straight in on release. Finished the first dlc with its extra puzzles, but only got halfway through the asian inspired dlc world before it became obvious the title had lost its way.
Sadly, based on my feelings about the dlc, its probably better we dont get get a sequal and are left just remembering the excellent first game.
Not surprising. While I enjoyed the game it didn't bring anything new to the table to be franchise worthy. All it was was Ubisoft's Breath of the Wild.
Thats a shame. Though i never got to finish it i really enjoyed the 15 hours i spent with the game
The direction Ubisoft is going I don't like it at all. They're slowly digging their own grave. Putting all their eggs in mainly AC basket isn't wise also of all the ips they have currently going on FC is the only fun franchise even though it's a shell of what it used to be. I hope they realize that not everyone wants AC dropped every single year. This title was a breath of fresh air albeit a clone. I loved the humor and the world. Hope Outlaw can become a good game for me to finish a Ubisoft game since FC5.
But its open world and Ubisoft loves open world. #fireyves
Man that’s sad news. I loved this game, it was charming and damn fun to play. I enjoyed it more than BOTW which it obviously took inspiration from.
Oh well, who needs a fun sequel to a new franchise when 2000 more AC games are planned.
Having UbiSoft worrying about their games being discounted made me laugh. Their games are discounted faster than anyones. To kill off this IP based on their pricing model says a lot.
Immortals is the best game Ubisoft has put out in years. It was gorgeous, pretty funny, played well and was just a nice world to play around in. I'm disappointed the sequel will probably never happen now.
I'm with you, @Titntin. The base game is probably my favourite game of this generation (and I've played all the big releases, other than Assassins Creed Valhalla, ironically!). The DLC never managed to capture the essence of the base game, which was a huge missed opportunity, and a real shame. Personally, had they made a sequel, I would still have pre-ordered it without hesitation as my faith in the base game would have won out. Gutted that it looks like we won't be seeing it. Ubisoft is often so short-sighted...
Played it for an hour through game pass. Hated every second of it. Deleted it and moved on
In other news Unisoft confirm a Skull & Bones sequel is in development.
This was the best new IP that Ubi had released in ages. Why not stick with it
@SacredPYRO people weren't willing to spend 10 bucks on it is why.
Unfortunate..I really enjoyed this one and scratched that botw itch for me.
Bummed out by this news. I loved Fenyx Rising and was hoping for more.
I liked the whole narration, was fantastic.
Shame the game itself was a "kinda hollow" BOTW clone BUT I was hoping for a sequel to evolve into something of its own.
The canceled the sequel to their only decent game in about a decade?
Color me surprised. /s
Argh! This was one of the best games of the last several years! I was really looking forward to a sequel.
At this point I think it would be easier to list the games that Ubisoft has NOT cancelled. What are we down to, 2 AC games and a pirate game nobody has ever wanted or will ever want, and another Just Dance? There's Rocksmith. Probably the one thing UBi has other than AC at this point. And it's mostly mobile.
@Titntin @Fiendish-Beaver IDK, I enjoyed the China DLC, I didn't think it "lost its way" so much as it was literally just a short and condensed reprise of the original campaign which made it feel kind of cheap. Nothing new, just more of the same with a wu xia skin, and a quarter the content. The advanced dungeon first DLC was good, tough, but good. The last DLC though the one that wanted to be a Diablo kind of thing was horrible though.
Truly disappointing. I have no idea what metrics Ubisoft is using when deciding on which games to pursue... But they should rethink them.
Shame as it was a really fun game....much better than the bore that has become Assassin's creed
"... a lot of sales came via discounting..." Yeah, uh, Ubisoft? That's not an issue with this game specifically, that's a problem you've complained about with all your games. It's not even remotely specific to Immortals.
@NEStalgia Outlaws, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Heartland, A new settlers released earlier this year, Motorfest, XDefiant,
Seems like an opportunity to buy an IP. Phil make some calls.
Bad news. Bought a physical copy full price on Switch when it released and was not disappointed. Love the look and humor. Lot of potential as many have said for a new IP so of course Ubi trashed it. Heck, they tried their best to kill it with the whole name change thing before the game even launched. Just Ubi being Ubi.
I tried it, didn't get into it.
Fine by me. I really did not like this game as it is an Ubisoft Open world at its core and I cannot stand them. Funnily enough from all their catalogue of open world games this is easily the one I played the most (as I finish it) as I tend to stop around the 5h mark from boredom
Sadly Ubisoft going to Ubisoft. No surprise.
Fans of Beyond Good and Evil 2 are no doubt sweating buckets at this moment.
Rayman Legends and Immortals Fenyx Rising are two of the best games I have played in the last decade, so I'm disappointed to see that Ubisoft's future seems to be Assassin's Creed only. It might hurt the company in the long term.
As @Fenbops, I believe that Immortals is much better and more enjoyable that Breath of the Wild and despite being described as a clone, Immortals do many more things and better.
@NEStalgia Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope was fantastic. And the new Prince of Persia looks great.
I'd love to see more Trials games from them. Another Rayman game. Maybe a new Child of Light.
Too bad their AAA multiplat stuff consumes the majority of their attention.
@Ralizah Same story for any publisher, really.... But in Ubi's case, it's not even about their AAA multiplat stuff consuming their attention so much as it consumes all their attention, and then they either cancel it or they release it and it's just bad, or it's another DoA cash grab service attempt. I could deal with AAA over rayman if they actually released AAA games that people actually played beyond AC. They've become a bigger more bloated Square-Enix.
So Ubisoft releases what looks like a Zelda rip-off, people are understandably skeptical, and then it turns out to actually be good.
And now they're surprised and disappointed that everyone wasn't rushing out to buy this on day one?
I actually enjoyed this game more the BoTW!
