At the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Fest earlier, it was announced Square Enix's popular MMO would finally be making its way across to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S in Spring 2024.
Phil Spencer had a lot of praise for Square Enix and Square Enix's CEO Takashi Kiryu also had some kind words for the Xbox boss - noting how Phil's efforts helped make this release a "reality" and it "wouldn't have been possible" without him.
The Square Enix boss also urged Xbox fans to give the Final Fantasy MMO a try when it arrives - mentioning how excited he is to finally see Xbox support added and can't wait to welcome the Xbox community to the world of Hydaelyn.
Final Fantasy 14 game producer and director Naoki Yoshida reiterated just how excited Square Enix is about this partnership: "I am extremely thankful and we are committed to working with Xbox going forward.”
Phil himself followed up with a post on social media after the event had concluded, mentioning how "thrilled" the Xbox team is:
"Enjoyed being onstage with Yoshi-P and Kiryu-san to announce Final Fantasy XIV coming to Xbox. We’re thrilled that the Xbox community will join the Warriors of Light and we look forward to partnering closely with Square Enix on future games."
When this MMO launches on Xbox next year, players can enjoy the game up to level 70, with no restrictions on playtime and access to the Heavensward and Stormblood expansions.
So there you have it - it seems Xbox's relations with Square Enix and the Final Fantasy team are better than ever. Will you be giving this game a go when it launches on Xbox next year? Leave a comment below.

If in future, Xbox players get to play FF7R and FF16, it's a massive win for the Xbox community. Congratulations on getting FF14 and hope people enjoy it. More games on Xbox is always positive news
Curious to know if this will work without Gold/Core since other MMOs like Elder Scrolls Online cannot be played without either Gold/Core.
Especially PC doesn't need a subscription at all.
@S-Bacc I would imagine it would be on the same servers the game currently is on, Square Enix's.
imagine Next FF timed exclusive for Xbox
@Blaa We have the better FF7
When ff16, ff7 remake
Huge huge final fantasy fan here. Don't care one bit about MMO games though. So this specific game is not interesting to me at all. I like all the single player FF games. That being said, I think maybe just maybe this brings a greater chance that future FFgames , current and older ones that never came to xbox, now may. And that is HUGE to me!
@BBB 16 could be awhile away but thought it was timed for about 6 months to ps. It will take time to come to Xbox but this does look promising for Xbox players. FF7R could come within the next year and be a great get for Game Pass, if that's the direction they'll take.
@gpapito the original will always be up there with the greats of gaming. The remake I've hears great things about from friends and ill happily wait more to play it on Xbox.
Xbox may have World of Warcraft and FF14 on the same console by this time next year. Alongside ESO that's the top 3 traditional sub MMO's. It's a gigantic win all around.
@Krysus
Can't see Wow coming to console.
People thought we going to get ESO cross play/progression between pc and Xbox and that's still not happening
@S-Bacc correct. As ESO has the same requirements it will be the same.
I'm more excited about getting more Square games personally. The Hd2d's, the pixel-remasters. Sure FF16 eventually.
@jamescrowx kinda tough to justify a 69billion purchase and NOT put one of its jewels on your system. Granted it will need full keyboard/mouse support. I'm no engineer, but if I recall, ESO was built on that gigaserver thing. WoW is certainly older. The only walls that would exist are the ones built. Segregated gaming is always dumb and not as profitable anyway.
@blaa If Xbox gets FF7R I will not touch my ps4 again and I won’t buy a PS5. All games will eventually come to other platforms anyway. And I’m not liking the way Sony is moving (live service games, a little bit of VR here and there and only one or two other first party releases per year) so it feels I can ignore that platform altogether.
Also, I don’t like Marvel stuff that much so I am not one who buys a PS5 for Spiderman 2 or Wolverine. God of War would have pushed me over the edge but that became a PS4 game.
@InterceptorAlpha
Curious to know if this will work without Gold/Core
I'm almost certain that Gold/Core will not be a requirement. One of the stumbling blocks of FF14 not being on Xbox was Microsoft's unwillingness to drop the Gold requirement for MMO's, kudos to SquareEnix for sticking to their guns, basically convincing Microsoft to dropp it 👏.
I am wondering if Phil pledged support from Xbox Game Studios to work alongside Square Enix in porting Final Fantasy XIV to Xbox.
@TakeItEasy Given the reaction I have seen regarding FF14 releasing on Xbox, I wouldn't be shocked if petitions were created to have the game cancelled, people start throwing flaming bags of poo at both Microsoft and Square Enix HQs, and/or lawsuits are filed against Microsoft that it's being anti-competitive.
@Sol4ris The thing is, they didn't though. Elder Scrolls Online requires Gold/Core.
This could just as easily be a deal where Microsoft gives them a cut of the pie AND they still get their sub fee.
@Friendly I've used PSVR ans PSVR2. I don't recommend it. Having a cable attached to your head completely breaks the experience IMO that's why I waited for wireless VR before ever upgrading from my Rift CV1. They missed a huge opportunity to make the PSVR2 wireless.
In Phil we trust!!!
@BBB Final Fantasy XIV requires that as well. I had to buy it before I could play it on PC. And the subscription fee was additional.
Has this changed and I missed it? Their website still shows the packages you buy.
What did he do to get them to start making it for xbox?
So where is pixel remaster, or 16?
@CutchuSlow apparently he helped remove restrictions on Microsoft side for for instance being able to communicate cross-platform. If I have listened to SpawnWave correctly.

@BBB Your comments have a lot of information, thanks. Just a correction, Final Fantasy XIV will be free until level 70, according to two articles on Pure Xbox. I think it's level 60 on other platforms. Looking at it that way, it's great value. It won't require Core and Square Enix doesn't charge for online so it's free-to-play and buy the other three expansions and unlocked level complete version if you wish so. I'm relieved to know that Square Enix doesn't charge for online. With cross-play and cross-save, it's all good news. It's an old game but it has evolved significantly, so I'll give it a "trial" on Xbox.
Whoa, how did I miss this?! I know it was kind of soft announced years ago but then became vaporware, so it's not completely surprising but given how square has been these days that's A huge surprise. Maybe the result of the new CEO more than anything?
Looking forward to it. I've tried and failed to get into the game several times on ps. Honestly this is the one game that the awkward Ui really needs the ps track pad, the only time it's ever been useful, ever, but I'm hoping starting with a new platform will make it feel more navigable for starting out.
@BBB @Banjo- FFXIV is a traditional pay per month. Mmo though. My account goes back a few years on ps but back in my day, you got a 30 day free trial with purchase, and then have to buy time cards after. I'm like level 10 but can't play for free, I have to renew the sub to play. Kinda sleazy that buying early meant paying when others that didn't don't need to.
I assume in Xbox it'll be a new account though. I don't think ps and pc has cross progression so I imagine xb won't either. Just not having to pay to keep trying and failing might help me get into it.
I assume that
@NEStalgia @BBB There are three threads about this, so I'm confused. I watched the 5-minute presentation but Phil and the Square Enix guy (I don't think it's the CEO) don't reveal any useful information. So you pay Square Enix monthly to play this game on Windows, OSX and PS?
@BBB I have never played it so I will get the free trial. If I really like it, I may pay the subscription fee in the future when I have more free time to enjoy it. How much is the current subscription? Your assumption about cross-save makes sense since there is cross-save between PC and PS.
@BBB Thanks again for all the information!
@Banjo- They're might be discounts buying annually. I know I've bought 90 day cards for some reason, I'd only have done that if 1 month didn't make sense but it's been a little while
@BBB Oh, really? I don't have a gaming PC these days so I hadn't tried it but for some reason thought a linked psn account doesn't work with cross progression on PC. That might play against me with Xbox since I'm trapped in the "no level 70 free for you" box. Unless like you said I create a throw away. Only thing I don't get is I think I created my mog account through PSN so it's my psn login. I'm sure xbl will have the same thing, so no idea how cross compatibility works that way.
I'm reading about Final Fantasy XIV and it seems really wonderful. Everyone should play the free trial when it comes to Xbox. Yes, there is a monthly fee after that, that I will only pay when I have enough time to play, but the game is extremely polished, massive and lacks any kind of real currency, passes or advertisements. Probably like other MMORPGs, but this is the one that intrigues me the most.
