The hype train has returned for Everspace 2 ahead of its release on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PS5 in just over a month's time, and Xbox Game Pass has evidently played a big role in its success on PC so far.
Speaking to the Xbox Expansion Podcast earlier this week, Rockfish Games CEO Michael Schade explained that the Game Pass deal (which initially saw Everspace 2 arrive on PC) ultimately allowed for more development time:
"We could have [made Everspace 2 without Xbox Game Pass], but it would have been a smaller game. Some part of the funds — the license fee - is when you launch on PC Game Pass in the Game Preview program, which is something we did. And then you get a significant chunk of the license, and that enabled us to work nine more months on the game..."
"Combined with the other revenue sources we had, plus the Game Pass deal, [it] enabled us to add nine to twelve months of more production time."
Schade then went on to explain that the release of Everspace 2 on PC Game Pass "didn't hurt sales" on the Steam platform, and he even lavished praise on Game Pass as being "one of the best, if not the best deals in the industry".
And in terms of the console launch next month, the CEO believes that Xbox Game Pass's influence will result in a "better" game for everyone, incluing those who end up buying it on PlayStation 5:
"So, yeah - it's maximum flexibility, extra funding, and you just make a better game. And everybody's happy! Even everybody who's not on Game Pass is getting a better game. So, even the PlayStation fans get a better game on PS5 because of the deal with Game Pass."
As mentioned, Everspace 2 is available to play right now on PC Game Pass, and it'll be coming to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S as part of Xbox Game Pass on August 15th, 2023.

@Moonglow I’m pretty sure he said publishers. And I think he only means AAA publishers.
Highlight of the Id@xbox Showcase, this looked excellent. I'll be copping the physical version of this. Hope the devs land a hit with it!
@Halucigens @Moonglow Jim Ryan doesn't know his arse from his elbow
Great, this looks fantastic. There's no question that for some devs the game pass model is a life saver.
The people who question it are the AAA large scale devs who can shift a lot of units at retail.
For these devs its obviously a great business model.
@Halucigens AAA Publishers who have 'big' selling Single Player games where they don't generate too much 'extra' income from all the additional purchases (MTX, DLC etc) and don't rely on a 'large' install base for the best 'online' experience (full lobbies in every game mode, low ping etc etc) are not likely to want to utilise Game Pass.
So games like Elden Ring or Final Fantasy would not be a 'good' fit for their Publishers to put these in Game Pass 'day and date', lose out on the 'massive' sales at the 'highest' price.
It really depends on the Publisher, their 'business' model and what may benefit them the best. It maybe better to put New IP's, especially if they have an Online component and their own 'Store' to sell MTX, DLC etc into Game Pass as you may get 'more' gamers in, more people in your 'store', establish a fanbase etc but 'big' IP's, especially Single Player, that are going to Sell extremely well at launch are better 'sold' for the Publisher.
I don't think its Black and White - that 'ALL' Devs/Publishers love or hate Game Pass, but that it going to suit some games better for their Publisher/Dev than others.
Putting your game onto Game Pass is simply a business decision. It's not like Xbox is forcing publishers and devs to use it. Obviously, the ones who tend to benefit the most are smaller studios who need exposure and/or funds for their game. Larger publishers also can use it to help with their more risky endeavors (thinking of RB6 Siege Extraction as an example) to help pad out a possibly rocky launch.
Game Pass can play an important role as an equalizer and also help devs take more risks or take more time to make their game knowing there are some guaranteed funds and support for their game along the way.
Not all publishers or devs will want or need Game Pass, and that is totally fine. I don't think GTA6 will need Game Pass to help promote the game... but I'm sure EA is regretting not putting BF2042 on Game Pass at launch to help boost numbers and ensure a stronger player base
I still think you can put a smaller AAA on Gamepass and then sell DLC to anyone who wants more… but you got to have it ready to go and often…
Bethesda is trying this with Starfield - the main game is 30-40 hours but the DLC will be where the value is generated…
I long for the day when anything positive about Game Pass doesn't immediately follow by mentions of Jim Ryan. Its constant. Lol.
If this site was a twitter he would be the top trending term at this point.
A snake is better off left in its pit and forgotten about.
Game Pass benefits indies big style. The funding they will get from it can almost make or break getting it out for release.
I can understand bigger publishers only dipping into it as it were but its massive for the indie development community.
I dare bet this is not a topic that will be covered on PlayStation focused sites, despite it being specific about how PS players are getting a better game.
@Jaxx420 If you are releasing GTA6, of course you don't put it in GP. If you are MS, promoting your own service (and have billions to spare), you can gamble. MS also releases simultaneously on PC, which Sony is wary of.
Everything else, from Indie games to AA-AAA games where sales performance is a toss up, can benefit. The devs get technical assistance, increased hype/advertising, and cash up front. Guaranteed revenue. They can still sell the game separately and on multiple platforms. If there is an exclusivity period, it is only for console and 6-months, tops.
@Tharsman Nope. I dont think it would be covered the other way around either. Wouldnt make sense.
@BAMozzy Just referring to this quote since the top comment referenced developers but Jim referred to Publishers. Ryan said, "I talked to all the publishers, and they unanimously do not like Game Pass because it is value destructive."
@Jaxx420 it would be covered if the headline was “we felt we lost sales”, though. You know that’s true.
@Tharsman That is very true.
Everspace in August, Starfield in September, Forza in October... that's not bad at all.
@Jaxx420 If Sony, Jim, PS and part of its user base didn't associate Xbox and Game Pass with the apocalypse, you wouldn't be reading these comments.
@Banjo- I dont disagree with the Sony zealots and good ol' JR associating it with the end of days but wouldnt you rather not see his name bandied around all the time? Gets old after a bit.
