Yesterday's Summer Game Fest 2023 showcase treated us to the reveal of The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S (along with other platforms), and surprisingly it's going to be with us in late 2023!
This is described as a "survival crafting" game in which you'll "take control of a company of Dwarves tasked to reclaim the lost spoils from the Dwarven homeland of Moria". You can check out the first footage in the gameplay trailer above.
Interestingly, the realm of Moria is procedurally generated, meaning no two adventures will be the same. Online co-op will be supported for up to eight players as well, so this definitely sounds promising so far!
We'll drop some extra details down below, and you can read more over at the game's official website.
"Set in a procedurally generated Dwarven realm of Moria, no two adventures will be alike, and every expedition is traversable either solo or online with companions. Players can mine to craft greater gear and resources, but beware mining makes noise, and noise created in the quiet deep threatens to awaken the dangers below: where there's clatter, there's combat.
Excavate the mysteries of three legendary mountains, extract precious metals, scrape to survive, and battle unspeakable forces to learn the secret of the Shadow that lurks within."

Well it will take some doing to be any worse than Gollum. I'm hoping for another RTS game like the ones on the 360 back in my college years.
It really seems like they’re just trying to bank on LoTR name and hope people still will buy a bad game. This one doesn’t look much better than Gollum, a shame what they’re doing to the franchise.
It seems like a fitting genre for the dwarves and lotr. I'm excited for it.
LOTR is one of the easiest and most video game friendly franchises. How many games could be LOTOR but don’t have the license. Set in a similar generic universe.
We get the odd good one and then awful ones. Ps3 had a decent run of good ones.
I was hoping they would make an entire franchise out of Gollum since the game is clearly a masterpiece.
It's cool that they got John Rhys-Davies to narrate the game. I hope this turns out well.
The state of LOTR games right now is embarrassing. The trilogy games of the PS2 era, Shadow of Mordor, and Lego Lord of the Rings, were all absolutely fantastic....what happened?!
I already know the secret of the shadow.
It's a Balrog!
@TheCrafter1578
I found Shadow of Mordor quite lacking and frankly, very boring.
We need a fully open world from the iron mountains to the eastern coast, to Mordor all fully explorable with every location in the book.
Set it not long before the hobbit and end the main story after the end of the return of the king.
Any race or faction can be chosen.
The stories unfold over the course of three years.
One for the hobbit, one for Rings. One for in between.
Most everything resets if you choose to play again, or you can continue on with your build.
Looks like crap!
@Spider-Kev I agree with all you said, except that SOM was not even close to lacking or boring.
Was the a fire sale on the LotR license?
Well it can't be any worse that's for sure lol
