Projector manufacturer ViewSonic has announced the release date and pricing details for its recently-unveiled Xbox 'X2-4K' projector - if you fancy splashing out on a really big screen to display your favourite Xbox titles.
The ViewSonic X2-4K Xbox Certified Gaming Projector launches this July in the US for $1600, and you can sign up for stock updates now from the ViewSonic website.
Of course, most projectors (any that support HDMI really) will work just fine with an Xbox console, but this one is certified for reasons. To be fair, ViewSonic says that "it went through 63 tests conducted by Team Xbox to ensure ultimate console compatibility", so, it sounds like Microsoft has had a large hand in getting the X2-4K certified for Xbox.
In terms of specs, the projector can do both 4K and 120Hz playback, but not at the same time. You have to choose between 1440p & 120Hz or 4K & 60Hz, just like using a 4K/120Hz TV that doesn't support HDMI 2.1. We'd have liked to see full 4K/120FPS support here but alas, you'll have to make the choice with the X2-4K. The projector also supports an 'Auto Low Latency Mode' to provide smooth gaming playback.
As you can see, the device is also sporting a neat Xbox-themed colour scheme with its green accents and whatnot - it does look pretty sleek! We don't really use projectors for gaming to be honest, but we've always been into the idea and this looks like a great way to get a cool Xbox/projector setup going at home.

My visually impaired a** would love one of these; looking at the website, the thing will project an image up to 120 inches ๐
Forgive my ignorance, but how does sound work when using projectors like this? Does it have speakers in it?
@Markatron84 It has two speakers built in
Price is actually not too bad. Been kicking around the idea of switching to a projector setup in our game room, will keep this one in mind
It is expensive - but it isn't insane. Good tvs cost as much.
@pepsilover2008 cheers ๐
I used to have a projector it was awesome. I have very fond memories of playing nazi zombies from COD world at war on an entire wall with friends back in college.
Thatโs very cheap. I currently have a $3500 projector not including the screen for my main home theater.
But it only plays starfield at 30fps.....
Imo 55โ is the perfect size screen for gaming. I donโt wanna be playin COD team death match an have to turn my head to see people!!
@Markatron84 While I haven't heard this projector, historically projectors have pretty limited sound features. This being a "gaming" projector might be better than your standard workplace projector. You might be better off using a headset or something else for audio.
@Lastatopiny But these people are people-sized!!
@Markatron84 I feel if I ever upgrade my plasma screen that might be a great option โฆ the only down side is that I might have all my games at 60 FPS
@AlwaysPlaying as much as I'd love one and as useful as it would be for someone with my disability, I'm under no illusions that I'll ever actually get one of these. I don't have the room to utilise it properly and the $1600 price tag is a bit of a roadblock as well.
I'll just have to keep sitting a foot away from my 43-inch TV ๐คฃ๐คฃ
I know this sounds like I am bragging, but I already have a 4K HDR projector. The Optoma UHD51ALVe. Cost about ยฃ1300. Money well spent. Watching movies on a 120inch projector screen is about as close as I will ever get to a true home cinema. In fact, the room it is in is probably not quite big enough. Never used it for games though, as this would eat into the lamp life too much.
@Markatron84
You need a surround sound amplifier. Connect your speakers - and connect the hdmi out on your amplifier to the projector, the same way you would with the tv. For instance, I use the Onkyo Txrz760 receiver, and a 5.1.2 surround setup. In theory, I could use 7.1.2, or 5.1.4, but I donโt actually have the room, at the minute. One day, maybe, if I move house.
@Scummbuddy an iโd av to look left an right which adds seconds to my reaction.
@Lastatopiny Yeah I think 55" TV's are ideal for most gaming purposes, but I can see the appeal of a projector for some kind of cool screen setup though.
@Matthewnh Lamp life is what always made me shy away from one. Sounds like a hassle to worry about replacing the lamp, and probably quite expensive too.
Well, yeah. I bought three spare lamps for my projector. they cost about 75 pounds each. With is kinda expensive - for a light bulb. That should last throughout my entire lifetime, I guess. Had the projector for about five years, havenโt needed to worry about changing the lamp, yet. Not as if it gets used every night. This is why I only use it for movies, and not for gaming. Still not very keen on the idea of actually changing the lamp, when I need to, but there has to be instructions somewhere, right?
$1600 is not expensive for a 4K projector. The brightness needs to be at least or more than 2800 lumens if you have any windows or ambient lighting.
Does it have Dolby Vision
@Markatron84
Some/most projectors have speakers built in.
I prefer to have my 23 speaker set-up hooked up. Which I can still do with my projector.
@Markatron84
just make sure you have room for a screen.
you need about 12 feet vertical by 12 feet horizontal to properly set up a screen. then you need about 11 feet from screen to projector to have the full image displayed.

I have and use this one for my Switch, PS4, SNES, NES, PS2, Wii, GameCube and WiiU.
I use a different Projector for my 4kUHD movies and Series X
@Spider-Kev not if its short throw though, recently got one for the living room that needs about 6 foot for 100"
@Deljo
True.
I have an Ultra Short Throw. It's great. Triple 4kUHD laser. has Dolby Vision as well!
@Spider-Kev only recently got into it but they're a lot of fun. Set up my racing rig and playing forza on the big screen is something else. ๐
@Matthewnh Thanks for your reply. Not as expensive as I thought, and they also last longer than I thought. Will definitely keep this in mind if I see a good deal on one
I'll put that on the list of Independently wealthy purchases.
Based on the product photos it looks like it's also light as a feather. It's sitting on that cushion and it's not squashing it at all!
