We've already found out a lot more about Starfield thanks to the special 'Direct' presentation - and Todd Howard followed this up by officially revealing the frame rates and resolutions of the upcoming space RPG on Xbox.
Now, it seems the file size has been revealed. While we can't break down what each system will exactly be, the official Starfield game page on Xbox now mentions the game is 125GB in size. So yeah - you might want to start clearing up some space ahead of the September 6th launch. The pre-installation for Version 0.0.3.0 will require around 314MB of free space.
During the opening of the Starfield Direct presentation, Todd reconfirmed how the game would feature "over 1,000 worlds" for players to explore. You can learn more in our previous stories:

No offense but I thought the file size would be a lot bigger.
I think I can make room for it ☺️
If you have a series S, you might want to consider to beat the rush & sell before there is a flood on the market. Yeah I saw that 314GB to preinstall!! That is going to chew up a bunch of space!! Going to be needing the new 1TB Series S or a series X.
@GoldenPants It says 314 MB of 'free space' for the pre-installation version with the full game taking up 125GB in the article.
Its not surprising as the game no doubt will have so many assets to use in procedural generation. It has a LOT more dialogue than any other game too - something that also takes up space so its not unreasonable.
It also means that 1 'disc' is not going to hold the entire game on it. Not that Series S or PC gamers buy 'Physical' - but those that do will unlikely get the complete game on it.
As for 30fps, I expected it. Maybe at some point down the line, they may add a 'performance' mode at 60fps with scaled down visual quality etc - although some things don't scale with Resolution as MANY seem to think. I'd rather play at a Locked 30fps than a game that runs inconsistently between 40-60fps and 30fps has never stopped me enjoying ANY game.
Defies all logic when you think about it - Microsoft Flight Sim is taking up c200GB (with updates) and it is only one world….Starfield apparently has over 1000 worlds 🤔
In line with what I expected.
I dont get why bathesda dont give gamers the right to choose.... I will still play starfield but why not give us 1440p/60fps option??? Other games does it!
Microsoft just love to give media and PS fanboys something they can use against them
I'm seriously thinking of upgrading to a Series X for this game.
@ApostateMage Same here. I'm waiting to buy one until launch is closer just in case they make a Series X Starfield Edition to match the new controller and headphones.
@Feffster I think most of the planets are procedurally generated, so technically they aren't in the game until you play... if that makes sense.
100GB plus is just a no for me. I literally can not be bothered with it. In fact it ends up costing us consumers more money in the long run.
@TakeItEasy because Starfield is a simulation and system heavy game with the size and scope of an entire galaxy. The game will be cpu limited not gpu limited. This means dropping resolution wouldn't help to get to 60fps. This is what alot of us have been saying for a while now. Starfield was never going to be 60fps on a £450 console
@Feffster MFS' one world is actually the size of Earth though. I highly doubt all or any of Starfield's 1,000+ plus planets will actually be explorable planet-sized areas.
@Markatron84 I believe there will be certain planets that have been hand made so to speak but all the rest get created as you play the game. So you get a quest that says to go to a certain planet then it will be procedurally created. The worry was would these procedurally generated planets feel the same and that would become boring. I have high hopes that Bethesda cracked that nut….
@Feffster Not really - MSFS is a real world simulator with a LOT of handcrafted areas built into a '1:1' representation of the Earth - all the Cities, the Airports, etc etc. It has to be the Same for everyone and as 'accurate' to real life as possible as people know exactly what there town/city/airport etc looks like.
Starfield is relying on a LOT of Procedural Generated content to fill those worlds. They only need the 'core' assets and leave it to procedurally generate the environment.
@TakeItEasy They do - buy it or play on PC - I doubt any '$500' PC will offer 1440/60...
Some things don't scale with resolution. If you have 20 Enemies to fight, they all have the same AI resources, Hit Detection, Physics etc at 1080p as they do at 4k so even if you reduce the resolution, you aren't reducing the AI, the Physics etc etc to reduce the 'frame-time'. Its not 'just' the GPU that has half the time to deliver the 'next' frame, its also the CPU, processing twice as many controller inputs etc too, the amount of Data per frame drops too - you can't transfer as much in 16.6ms compared to 33.3ms so its not as simple as just drop the resolution down in half to double frame rates...
Why do they offer a "preinstall" for a game that's not out for 3 months? What's the point? If the files aren't there to play then you'll have to still download them on release, and if they are then why can't we just play it now?
Yeh I also don’t understand why you’d bother to preinstall a game now when it’s not due out for couple months. It only uses up space on your console so what’s the point? Anyways, This looks to finally be the big exclusive system seller the Xbox Series X needs.
@BAMozzy @Markatron84 @RetroMan71 - lol, thanks guys - my comment was intended to be very much tongue-in-cheek, even I’m not that dumb to think the file should be 1,000x 200Gb for Starfield 😎
That's a fair size for a game of its scope. Not really a surprise.
I was, however surprised that they didn't target 60fps on Series X to entice people to upgrade ahead of release.
I know this is probably a dumb question, but is there a reason why people would pre install a game 3 months in advance?
Not unexpected but it's just another reason why I get annoyed with how little memory space these companies offer on their consoles (there's plenty of PS5 games with large file sizes as well) out of the box. If there was a way to get an affordable 4TB storage expansion card for the XSX, it'd be a non-issue.
@Feffster mate, I'm autistic. I often can't pick up on tongue-in-cheek humour when it's being spoken to my face, let alone in text 🤣🤣🤣
@Markatron84 - no worries at all buddy, it’s so easy to misconstrue the intended meaning of text or email. Just nice that we can discuss things Xbox related on here with (mostly) like-minded people. It’s a friendly bunch on here, we don’t always agree on everything but for the most part discussion and opinion is well and politely argued.
@GoldenPants Already too late in the UK, Cex which is the easiest place to sell old hardware buys the Series S for like £60! I will prob just keep my as a second console and get a Series X in the future rather than the new Series S even though I do like the look of it.
