Microsoft surprised flight sim fans during this year's Xbox Showcase with the announcement of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. Here's what we know so far:
"Coming 2024 - the next generation of the legendary franchise. Join the aviation adventure in a groundbreaking simulator developed for Xbox Series X|S and PC."
In related news, Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) will also be getting a Dune Expansion - here's a description, along with a first look:
"Announced today! In partnership with Legendary and Warner Bros. Entertainment, Microsoft Flight Simulator has created an authentically detailed House Atreides Ornithopter. Master the complex controls of one of the most dynamic aircraft ever conceived as you pilot your ornithopter through awe-inspiring locations across the mysterious desert planet of Arrakis."

While i loved Flight Sim the lack of real goals had me fall off sooner then i would have liked, this looks to solve that.
I am so thrilled with this. Hopefully it's an add-on. I adore MFS but a Story/Career mode? Yes please!
This was the best game presented for me.
This looks chill... Gonna have to get me an expansion card though 😆
This (and now Starfield) is the reason I own a Series X. Hoping it's an update as I purchased it for when I take breaks from Gamepass. If it's a whole new 220GB + download I'll just have to deal with it. Looks incredible!!!
So, is 2024 a standalone game or expansion to the og MFSF? I ask because I thought microsoft/asobo etc were going to support MFSF for at least 10 years. I like the look of 2024 with missions etc but will kinda begrudge having to shell out another small fortune for it
that dune slice looks amazing. could you imagine what a full dune game that looks exactly like that would be.
This was a big suprise for me!
As someone who never saw the incentive to 'play' Flight Sim, I am intrigued by this.
This is one that will be on my list when it comes out.
Ok...I'm confused if this is an add-on, a soft reboot, or a totally separate title. I'm extremely intrigued by the story/career style. But if you're telling me I need another spare 230g of space on my Series S....that's a tough ask.
Looks like it might be an actual game now which is cool. No idea why they didn't add a truck sim style mode to MFS in the first place. I found the last one to be an incredible piece of tech that wasn't overly compelling. Awesome if you're into planes though no doubt.
It's a standalone game which is a bummer but at least your purchases in 2020 will go across to 2024 (with few exceptions apparently)

@wazza99999 That's a relief as while I haven't put lots of hours into the current one, or spent a lot I know a lot of people most certainly have, and I was tempted to buy a couple things, and it would have put me off for sure.
@PhileasFragg For some reason, I'm still a bit peeved that it's a standalone game but I guess even as an expansion, we'd have to pay for it so I guess all there is to wait for is the price now.
I wonder if the reason for making it a new title is to make it a little less of a sim and have it more "arcadey" to appeal to a broader audience
@wazza99999 Thanks for the link. So if I'm understanding this, it is simply the next MFS. I'm gonna guess its somewhere in the 280g range. Hopefully they dip harder into smart delivery this time. I love MFS for that zen-chill vibe, but being able to have a story and career mode? Sign me up! MFS was the original reason I picked up my Series S.
@wazza99999 it's a real shame. Like most I assumed this was just an update to the existing game and not a whole new game that needs to be bought again.
I thought this looked incredible and it did seem like a MASSIVE update. But they said they would support Flight Sim for 10 years and while they still could, it's just a bit dishonest to supersede it with a sequel after saying that.
@wazza99999 They're releasing it because modern game publishing wants to have its cake and eat it too. They want long term live services with a steady cash flow of in game payments AND the regular big influx of a new title.
The in game store selling VERY expensive 3rd party add-ons is supposed to be the revenue source, but they want enthusiasts to shell out for a new version as well.
@wazza99999 @Krysus @themightyant they might still provide continued support for the 2020 version via real time weather and other online features and minor patches.
Honestly, I would think a new entry would be better, especially if purchases carry over, since this means 2024 is free with Game Pass white a FS2024 expansion would had been likely an expensive paid DLC, and DLC are never part of GP.
Also, with a sequel, they can rethink internal systems, engine features and what not. Structural changes are usually out of the question when maintaining the same base core game. You can change and improve a lot more when you simply make a sequel.
@Blinx ya joking! I couldn’t wait!! First thing i did was land on my street! Then Area 51, then North Korea, then Pablo Escobar’s island.
