Following its grand reveal at the Xbox Games Showcase 2023, fans were quick to compare inXile Entertainment's Clockwork Revolution to Irrational Games' BioShock Infinite - largely down to the game's similar steampunk aesthetic and first-person perspective. However, it sounds like they're going to be very different games, as reinforced by inXile studio head Brian Fargo.
Fargo has cropped up on Twitter a fair bit over the past few days; replying to fan questions and just providing a bit more information on Clockwork Revolution in general. Here he is, reeling off some of the game's core design principles:
The studio head backed that up by letting fans know that Clockwork Revolution "is a true RPG" with all the nitty gritty mechanics that the team is "known for".
Replying to the above tweet, Fargo also confirmed that the game will be using Unreal Engine 5 when it launches on Xbox Series X|S and PC. For now we don't have a Clockwork Revolution release date, other than it's set to arrive "in due time" - hopefully that's fairly soon!
Do you like the sound of Clockwork Revolution? Tell us what you make of inXile's next game so far.

I look forward to playing it. All the elements are there for me.
I loved the hell out of Wasteland 3 (totally get why some might not). Loved that world reacted to my choices BEFORE the end of the game.
Ah, couldn't remember which game had "in due time" as release date. Don't really no idea how to interpret this. Given that other games had 2024, I guess they hope to release it next year, but aren't 100% sure yet. Would really love to try this one (the sooner the better).
In due time sounds like 2025 haha
Another UE5 game in development - but UE5 only released to 'developers' in April 2022. No doubt they could have built some aspects in UE4 but even still, we aren't seeing many UE5 games yet. The only UE5 game so far is Epics Fortnite so I can understand why this, as well as games like Hellblade 2, aren't ready yet...
Seems an interesting game, but I won't get excited or 'hyped' about this - not until its the 'next' game releasing I want to play. Until then, there is always something else on the horizon to be excited for and this will come around in 'due time'... LOL
As a fan of Wasteland 3 I'm really looking forward to this. Wasteland 3 was the best rpg I've played in recent years and the trailer of clockwork revolution has me intrigued. Just waiting to see how they branch out from isometric rpg to fps rpg. I wish them all the best.
I honestly wouldn't care if it was a straight rip from Bioshock. InXile has my money already.
I’ll be finishing Starfield in due time so I can play this right after!
So where Sony is known for cinematic third-person action titles with all the Hollywood spectacle of a Marvel movie, Microsoft is becoming the WRPG company:
Starfield
Avowed
Outer Worlds 2
Clockwork Revolution
@BAMozzy Have you seen the latest DF Live interview with the Layers of Fear team? They are showing off the Series X version of the game and go into some details about the differences between Performance and Quality Modes and I think is a pretty good indicator of what to expect with UE5 on Series consoles (at least from third party developers).
To sum up:
Series X: Quality Mode - 4K/Hardware Lumen (30fps); Performance - I believe 1440p/Software Lumen (60fps).
Series S: 800p/Software Lumen (60fps) only.
All modes use the UE5's internal Super Sampling to give it the appearance of higher resolutions.
It does not use Nanite because there was no benefit to using it for the game since the game is such tight quarters.
@Moonglow UE5 was released in early access on May 26, 2021 and formally launched for developers on April 5, 2022. Before that, it wasn't 'production' ready, it was in Alpha/Beta states.
So yes, they could have 'played' around with the Beta, but it wasn't ready to make Games and/or use things like 'MetaHumans'. It was a Beta so that devs could try aspects and feedback. Hardware Lumen wasn't even an option for example.
The Matrix Demo was more a demo for to promote UE5 to devs to consider it for their project.
@GamingFan4Lyf I didn't watch the Layers of Fear piece as I had no interest in the game itself and at over an hour long, I haven't had the time to watch a replay yet.
EDIT: Watching now - interesting to hear how 'development' on UE5 has been challenging with Updates impacting on things they had worked on and little changes affecting what they 'thought' they knew - constantly 'learning'. Shows that UE5 is evolving but that can also cause 'issues' to overcome whilst developing games...
The words true and RPG used next to each other in a sentence warms my soul. But really, I wouldn't expect inXile to make anything else.
I’m all for this game. Wasteland 3 was excellent and had superb writing, and the RPG elements really shined throughout.
I see hints of BioShock (Infinite) in this trailer, and that’s a huge plus for me. With that all said, I really dislike the name “Clockwork Revolution”. It doesn’t sound all that appealing. Oh well - if the game is good, that’s all that matters.
I hope it isn't too like Infinite. Hot take: I was a huge fan of Bioshock. I hated Infinite. I realized about halfway through they just had you opening crates half the game to pad on time on a pretty boring game to me. The repeated faces of the NPCs all over the city really irked me. I didn't even bother finishing the game to find out if the repeated NPCs was purposely done.
Very happy that this game is getting character creation.
I don't think this will be like Bioshock Infinite. I do agree it has a 'Similar' vibe to its world - but then its turn of the Century Steampunk setting is 'common' between these two.
Bioshock is more Linear and doesn't really have deep RPG mechanics, Character Creation or Branching Dialogue systems. Its more a Narrative driven Action game than an RPG. It was also built for the 360 gen so was limited by that hardware.
The 'time control' alone seems to set it apart. As time goes on, we will get more and more info about this. I can understand the Bioshock comments because its setting is 'similar' but as we only had that 'trailer' to go on, its not exactly clear how it will differ too.
I like the 'Victorian' Steampunk aesthetic myself so its setting appeals - but its too early to be excited or hyped for this. Its good to know what inXile are working on, but I have games coming much sooner to be 'excited' for...
@BAMozzy @Cashews gameplaywise, I'm sure it will be nothing like Bioshock Infinite. But it's impossible not to think about Infinite. Not only do the games look the same, but the story teased in the trailer is very reminiscent of Infinite... a steampunk city where a black woman is leading a revolution against the wealthy elite? And there is time travel? Granted that Bioshock Infinite is more about parallel universes, but the two still feel very similar to me.
@Magabro yeah I'm really hesitant on this one. Copying is sincere flattery and all that but straight up copying a game is wack. This one gave me the same taste as that lame SE Splatoon clone but with bathbubbles.
@Magabro That's like saying that Days Gone is like Last of Us - both feature a Male character and both in a post-apocalyptic setting with Zombies (infected people) - both third person etc. Or saying Sonic is just Mario - side scrolling platformer where the objective is to get to the 'end', pick up power ups, collect rings, coins and try and avoid getting hit by enemies - but they are still very different too...
I get it, it 'looks' similar to Bioshock and has some similarities too - which is why you immediately think of and then compare to 'Bioshock'. Its only natural. This however isn't putting you in the shoes of a predetermined Character and telling their Story through a 'linear' and fixed story as it has branching options, maybe multiple endings too.
Hi there fellow gamers.
InXile are speaking my gaming language;
I am all about this. No doubt they can deliver something great.
With Bethesda, Obsidian and InXile in their rooster, Xbox is becoming a really interesting place for rpgs.
And let´s not forget all the Atlus games coming to.
It´s great to see it. Now if only Xbox could get Bioware of old....
Cheers and happy rpg gaming to us all
@Kaloudz It's really piqued my interest. Very much looking forward to it as well.
Game of the show for me.
Everything from the aesthetics to the genre to.. basically everything else speaks to me on a deep level lol
Can't wait!
