Atlus Reveals Two New Persona Games, Both Coming To Xbox Game Pass

Now just want Strikers to be ported over.

Microsoft probably not happy that these leaked early. Awesome news nonetheless!!!

Assuming microsoft continues marketing rights. Hopefully multiplatform as that would force tbe series back into the super niche territory

Nothing about them being console exclusive which is a good sign, but I'm hoping that Persona 3 Remake has new content or its a no from me.

@Rmg0731 It would say console exclusive but it doesn't so they are coming to other consoles, xbox just has the marketing and the day one on gamepass.

Phil must be a bit cranky right now, these were likely going to be big surprises for the Xbox showcase.

@AlwaysPlaying Well it's a bit tedious when you've already played the PS2 version and then the PSP version, and they put the game onto Nintendo and Xbox consoles just 6 months ago. They need to add new content similar to Royal/Golden to make this worth it for me.

I’m not sure about P5T yet, will need more info, but given its chibi visuals, I can’t help but ask: Atlus, make Persona Q available outside Nintendo platforms!!!

@UltimateOtaku91 given they basically just re-released P3P, I would not be shocked if Atlus does not mind if players of that one don’t want to jump on board and this remake is simply meant to bring in younger and “more modern” players that are put off by the older visual style of P3P.

@Tharsman Makes sense, although those who are only part way through the P3P re release they might end up leaving that and just waiting for the Remake.

Il just wait and see if they announce any info on new content, I know a lot of people will be upset over the lack of female protagonist option.

Also I thought the Shin Megami Series was meant to be coming to Xbox/Playstation as well, I'm pretty sure it was heavily rumoured and even some marketing banners were leaked online.

@UltimateOtaku91 Wouldn't that make this a double updated version, though? P3 was already updated on PS2 with FES. I mean, I'm sure this has massive QoL improvements compared to the original, as it looks like a ground up remake. I'd have to think a lot of gameplay systems will probably be further developed on naturally just by nature of less hardware constraints today.

Its not a "definitive" version and is based of the vanilla version which is disappointing, not even FES content.

@UltimateOtaku91 Oh, no. That means they're going to sell us Persona 3 Reloaded: FES in two years... But I suppose in a sense don't they often say that the extended versions actually aren't canonical? They're basically just developer fan fiction?

@SplooshDmg Yeah we've seen that with Persona 5 Strikers as it didn't follow Royal and it looks to be the same with Persona 5 Tactica.

I would of prefered Tactica to be like Persona Q and have characters from multiple games.

@UltimateOtaku91 So far, its a rumor. Who knows, maybe someone stopped the Instagram person from uploading all the trailers before things were spoiled, or maybe SMT will be revealed in the future. Maybe as much time apart in reveal as there was between Soul Hackers 2 and the P3-5 coming to Game Pass reveal.

@Tharsman Well I hope so as over the last few weeks I've been buying a lot of 3DS games before they all go super rare, but SMT 4 is going for £130+ on ebay and I'm not paying that.

@UltimateOtaku91 damn, UK prices are nuts... it goes for about $50 in the US. I do have a copy I bought quite a few years back. Wish I had bought Apocalypse back then, though... that one in good conditions tends to go for about $70-$80.

Reminds me how everyone said they wanted the Pokémon DPP remakes but really they just wanted Platinum. Without that people weren’t as into the games.

Now i just wish Square would bring FF16 to Xbox. Instead they are having articles that they are worried about the low pre order numbers on PS5. Gee who would have thought having the game release on PS5, Xbox and PC would have made them more money. You restrict how many people can purchase your items for sale and this is what happens. I for one am not a big FF guy but think 16 looks different enough for me to give it a go. I do have a PS5 but would prefer to play it on Xbox, so i plan to wait and see if we hear anything about it.

This is quite a win for Xbox in going for wider range on Gamepass. I tried P3P after P5R but bounced back after a few hours. This one feels a lot bit too much of the same but I definitely need a big revamp (as I am already not a fan of SMT). Tactics is also not my thing but if it is more on the Mario rabbids style and less fire emblem/xcom, I will give it a go

how time changes, im such a huge persona and devil survivor fan i bought Ps4 back at the time not for GOW not for unchearted not for anything else but the beautiful and wonderful persona 5! i stopped watching anime but persona make me feel like living in one and characters feels like your actual friends,

and to think that not only gamepass will give me persona 5 royal that i wasnt ready to pay for again to play the extra levels but they give me persona 3 4 and 3 reload and 5 tactics day1!!! slow down MS im gonna Cu*

@Green-Bandit Release pacing is FFXVI's biggest problem, namely that FFVII Rebirth's launching a mere 7 months later (early 2024 means January/February 2024).

Looks like I'll be buying Persona 3 again (FES pre owned on PS2, P3P Xbox and now this next year, even though they're on game pass). As they say, good things come in threes.

@UltimateOtaku91 You heard of Gotcha Force on GameCube or Team Buddies on PS1? They were cheap as fudge when I was a kid/teen. Now they're £100+. Gave my brother my Gotcha Force but he lives with me so I could still play it if I wanted but I regret trading in Team Buddies when I still bought physical games.

Just curious why do you buy games physically anymore? Many game requires huge updates even when you insert a disc or card (in the Switch's case) meaning when the servers go down the disc or card is an largely buggy incomplete version of the game.

@Grumblevolcano I’d like to think its biggest problem is not supporting millions and millions of gamers on other platforms. I mean MS and Sony are showing you need to be on PC and other platforms. Makes very little sense if you aren’t first party not to bring the games to more players. I might still get it on my PS5. But from a business perspective, Square knows it is hurting its own sales being exclusive to one platform.

Yes me and you have PS5’s so we aren’t locked out of games, but people that say well just get it there, forget that i should have choices and with my wallet i do have a choice. I to understand they sell better on Nintendo and PS. But porting a game cost very little and the return to investment is huge. Something Square or any game maker should want. We are seeing MS’s strategy of having it’s games in more places bring in way more sales and player engagement, so much so it caught Sony’s eye and this gen they are getting their games on more platforms. Great point about Sega. Then there’s the controller argument, so this don’t get to wordy i will just say i highly prefer the Xbox controller over Sony’s and that started around the OG Xbox to the launch of 360 and hasn’t changed for me. Even with the troubles of the launch of Xbox one i stayed with Xbox as my main console cause of the controller, i didn’t care that 3rd party ran smoother on PS4, cause the controller didn’t fit my hands well nor was i fast and accurate with it as i am with Xbox. Granted the One X came out and solved the hardware issue so i won in the end, but was willing to lose to have the Xbox controller. It would be silly now to switch to playing 3rd party on PS5 cause i still don’t love the dual sense even tho i find it better than PS3 and PS4’s controllers. You hit the nail on the head better for what point i was trying to get across, thanks.

@Green-Bandit The point I was trying to get across is that Square Enix have already taken into account the PS5 exclusivity for their expectations. If it was multiplatform day 1, yes of course there would be more preorders but Square Enix's expectations would also be higher hence resulting in the same panicking that's currently being reported on.

Multiplatform would of course be the better outcome, all I was saying is that it wouldn't solve Square Enix's specific problem. Meanwhile if they revealed FFVII Rebirth in September 2023 instead of June 2022, that would've solved their problem.

@Mastodon3954 Yeah i went digital a decade or longer ago and don’t miss switching disc’s. You make all the right points. Square is making decisions that seem easy and yet they make it look so wrong, has to be costing them money. I can’t help but think they are leaving money on the table. All the evidence with other titles from different studios give me that confidence. I to prefer western hardware and software, the PS5 which i mainly like, is a mess on the Ui side to me. To many clicks and things in the wrong spots for my liking, that is not to say Xbox’s Ui is perfect cause i would love to see the adds gone. But it is faster and less clicks to do things. I too like the features of the dual sense. They for sure add something to the gameplay, but my hand hurts using the controller after a while. Plus my thumbs get more traction on an ice cube than the sticks on PS. I am constantly slipping off the thumb sticks and having to reposition. I even bought the Edge and it did very little to help my grip. Disliked the thumb cap options in box. Should have returned it for what i paid.

@ZuneTattooGuy I agree with you, but since a i’ve been collecting Atlus Games since the PSP era, its just for Collection Sake (in the case of Atlus games, most of them are complete and does not require patches)Switch games are mostly complete too, PS5 and XBOX games I stopped collecting a long tome ago for the reasons you state, are just incomplete messes.

@Mastodon3954 YoshiP specifically said they shopped around to multiple potential partners. It seems like Square wanted to secure some specific external funding before even committing to FFXVI, it sounds like making a multiplat release wasn't even a possible avenue they wanted, but they also didn't care who their exclusivity was with...PS, MS, probably Stadia (back then), whoever... whoever paid most.

Since they keep talking about Sony helping with production and the like, and Sony obviously had the best deal, I'm thinking Sony pitching in part of the actual dev costs/staff/facilities gratis is what swung them over that fence. Lower sales, but less risk than it otherwise seemed. Though it might be backfiring if it "underperforms", it sounds like they expected at least a certain threshold of sales factored in with the exclusivity and their preorders aren't hitting the targets. Then again, it's Square and nothing ever does.

I'm curious though how much announcing 7R-2 coming right after might dent 16's sales. I'm hoping it has a big impact honestly because I've been very cirtical of making an action-adventure game in a Game of Thrones setting and calling it "FF16" cynically, and I'd like to see that plan backfire with a chunk of fans skipping 16 and waiting for the "real" FF game at the end of the rainbow.

@Mastodon3954 yeah i have looked at different things for PS to make the controller better for me. I like the shape and feel in hand of the Dual sense as it’s mainly borrowing the Xbox shape. It’s the placement and style of the sticks that is the issue. I also don’t love the triggers, they have a long travel and take your fingers so far down and then your thumbs are way low on the sticks. I don’t think i am doing a great job describing my discomfort, but if that makes sense then good. Otherwise the Xbox controllers fit’s me perfect. I am the same with Digital and physical media, while digital is what i prefer and works for me cause i have fiber internet at 1000mbps. I like physical and am glad it’s there for those that want or need it. They can co exist with each other one doesn’t have to make the other go away. But the internet makes it all or nothing. Sure Digital is the future and continues to gain more and more share over physical. But physical still has a place.

@Green-Bandit If you like PS5 first party games enough to justify the investment, there are two expensive controllers that might help your issues:

Razer's Wolverine V2 Pro Wireless Gaming Controller is a PS5 wireless controller that has an xbox-style joystick placement, it even has a more xbox-style shape.

PDP's Victrix Pro BFG Wireless Controller is a strange modular controller that allows you to flip the layout at will. The screenshots in the link will show it by default having a very PS-style layout, but you can literally remove and reorient that piece.

These both are expensive, though. The first one is $250, and the second one is $180. I have no personal experience with this one myself, although a friend of mine has an older PDP Victrix variant they use on PC and they love it. I have felt very tempted to get myself the Victrix, if only to play around with it, but its too expensive "just to play around" with it. I do prefer Xbox controller layout, but can live with dual sense as it is.

Maybe they have more data, but I think they fail to account for the fact that this generation is nothing like the previous generation. It's not just about XBox not being as far behind anymore (still not exactly close, lets admit that too) but this time around the playerbase is a lot more divided than it was back then.

When FFXV launched, PS5 was king and PC was still a bit of an underdog.

In the last half decade, though, Steam has made huge strides on getting PC gaming to adopt gamepad support. Used to not be uncommon for PC games to mandate mouse/keyboard, and have extremely jank gamepad support. Nowdays, UIs properly display the button layout of the most popular controllers. This has made playing games that used to be considered "console focused" a lot more viable on PC.

So... It's no longer just PS being king, with XBox, Wii U and PC being behind for this kind of games. These days, there is a LOT more people playing on way more platforms, and even those few with multiple consoles will be very picky what they end up buying for their secondary consoles.

I loved P4G and then enjoyed P5. One thing I don't enjoy is the anxiety about minmaxing your social links and bestiary.

I hate using guides, occasionally will look up collectable locations or puzzle solutions if I'm stuck. But the social link stuff is usually attached to achievements / trophies and it drives me nuts. In a 100 hour game Atlus even want you to play through multiple times.

As mentioned it was novel in P4G and P5 but I'm noticing these elements filtering into other games and honestly, I don't like it.

@themcnoisy Honestly, I'm someone that never really understood achievements/trophies to begin with, never payed attention or cared really. So I could probably just say the below about all games, but I still think some games simply shouldn't have achievements, I know the achievement hunters go into "no trophy no buy" mode, but a game like Persona isn't really designed around the whole achievement-hunting minmax thing, it's about making choices and going where those choices unfold and the consequences of making or not making a particular choice at a particular time. By nature you can't minmax everything. If you spend time with one person you can't spend time with another. If you max one link you ignore others. That's the entire nature of it. Pentiment is the same.

Personally I do have mixed feelings about the time management design idea, because i don't like having to miss options I wanted to explore with characters, or worry about leveling up one stat to the detriment of another, etc. But it's a conscious design and trying to minmax/trophy hunt for it really is an attempt to break the intent of the design that "this is where my choices brought me" that the social aspect is meant to evoke.

I think adding the external idea of "100%-ing" a game that the core design is not actually meant to be 100%-ed ever is just sort of broken by nature.

@Tharsman Thanks, so i have looked at both and haven’t been able to get either in my hands to see if i like them or not. I for sure would love to test them in hand. It would make a big difference to get a better controller for my PS consoles, as it’s largely the biggest reason why i only turn my PS one to play a first party Sony game and once I finish it i am back on my Xbox until the next one. I don’t like to miss out on any games, but while beating Ratchet and Clank and Last of Us Part one on PS5 my hands were not happy. Games were great tho 😊

@Green-Bandit For what its worth, both are also available on Amazon, and their return policy is ridiculously consumer friendly. Depending where you live, there might be a partner that you can always take basically anything to so you can do returns without even worrying about shipping costs.

Best Buy return policy is also very very good, they will let you return also almost anything, but you are more restricted depending if there is a Best Buy near you or not (and if you are in the US at all.)

@Tharsman yeah i should test the Wolverine from Razer cause it looks good to me. If i don’t like it i can return it. Hate to do that to them, but sometimes that’s the only way to test it. I rarely go into a GameStop cause i buy 100% digital. When i do go in they never have them for display or test.

I want FF16 and the FF7 remakes on Xbox so badly. And it doesn’t make sense unless Sony is paying them.

FF15 released multi platform and outsold FF7: Remake, which is a much more popular franchise. So you’d think they’d have learnt this by now.

@Tharsman you are spot on. It’s more toy’s and T-shirts than games. That’s another reason i don’t buy disc’s. Digital is perfect for me. GameStop in my opinion probably don’t have another decade in it’s future but i could be wrong. Even Best Buy and other stores have next to no new games on the shelves. They are going the way of CD’s and movies. Most stores barely carry a collection of those these days.

Long story short, I have always loved computer games, from the amstrad cpc 6128 through to the gamecube. However with working, uni, apprenticeships, having a son at a young age, I hardly finished anything. Usually playing a few levels and never getting good. Genuinely I maybe finished 10 games that whole time.

That all changed when I was involved in an incident on duty in the Navy. I had 4 operations and was holed up in bed for 6 weeks on 2 separate occasions. It was around this time my wife bought the x360 to give me something to do. With only a few games I started working through them. I didn't take it seriously, more of a novelty. But I enjoyed the diversion and working towards achievements. I completed more games in 6 months than I had in the previous 30 years. And got ridiculously good at rockstars table tennis. Unlocking cheevos as I went.

Unfortunately life always gets in the way, I'm a busy dude. Got medically dischardged, started a job in civvy Street and had responsibilities and stuff. My achievement hunting career was over. I more or less stopped gaming.

Anyway, a few years later we got a surprise addition to our family, we hadnt long moved house and my mum was diagnosed with alzeimers and needed help with literally everything. All my surplus money suddenly evaporated. I couldn't afford to do much outside of pay the bills and had to make sacrifices to go on holiday, have a decent car etc. That included working every weekend and sacrificing my social life.

So I picked up gaming again. A PS4 to be exact and signed on to pushsquare. Its cheap and you can kick back for a few hours, picking up trophies / cheevos as you go. Joined in forum chat and looking out for the next big thing! My life was hard work, trophy hunting gave me something else to think about.

More recently my financial situation is much improved. But I quite enjoy my routine and missed Halo and Forza. So I picked up an xbox series x instead. I drop my daughter off at school, do some chores, get myself ready, go to work, go to the gym, have my tea, grab some achievements, run the ms rewards.

Achievements aren't the be all and end all. But if you are compromised in life you find other things to look forward to. I put value and meaning into achievement hunting as it has helped me get through major hurdles in my life. Everything's pointless if you view it nihalistically.

What's the point in getting achievements? Well they have saved me financially, given me something to focus on and are fun.

That is, except the stupid trophy for getting max social links and maxing the persona log. I agree with you, persona should be taken at its own pace. So why did Atlus add them as achievements/ trophies anyway? The only people I know who have achieved said trophies hated the act of redeeming them.

I don't want to say trophies don't sound at all like a good idea but I don't think they seem like a universally applicable idea. They appeared in the x360, then later ps2 era but we're necessarily in design during the og xb/PS2 era when games were much much smaller, the popular games were shooters with 6-9 hour campaigns and something that made replaying more interesting made some sense. Now in the age of the 80-250 hour living world simulators where not every piece of content is necessarily intended to be seen when playing naturally, but exists to ensure there's something of interest anywhere players explore, trophy hunting just seems like a masochistic grind. I think the platforms mandate trophy support, so they have to add something but it just doesn't make sense in every game, and especially time management games like persona and pentiment or games with multiple character options that are mostly the same but with some unique differences, where missing some content is an intentional part of the design of choice and consequence. Maybe it needs participation trophies 😂

I'm sorry but remaking Persona 3 1.0 Vs FES version 1.5, is... stupid or greedy ! Atlus will sell Persona 3 FES Remake next year ??

I still don't understand why Microsoft have wasted their money putting embargoes on Atlus announcing these games for other consoles for 48 hours. The fact they have put embargoes on it to begin with just shows its coming to other consoles. I just don't get it.
