Last year's Pentiment was an Xbox exclusive that probably flew under the radar a little bit, all things considered. Sure, it wasn't the most 'AAA' affair from famed RPG developer Obsidian, but we thought it was fantastic when it dropped onto Xbox Game Pass last November. However, it's looking like we'll have to accept that our time in the world of Pentiment has wrapped up already.
Obsidian's studio design director Josh Sawyer recently responded to a question about the future of Pentiment. Sawyer says that he "always intended it as a standalone story" and that the team has "no plans to make any sort of sequel, spiritual or otherwise".
"The original non-working title of Pentiment actually was Palimpsest! Microsoft legal sensed potential difficulty with securing that name so I renamed it to Pentiment.
And no, I have no plans to make any sort of sequel, spiritual or otherwise, for Pentiment. I always intended it as a standalone story. It may inspire ideas (hopefully not just for me!) in the future, but I'm happy with where we've left it."
While this is a bit of shame given how much we enjoyed the game, it worked well as a standalone project anyway. Also, Obsidian seems to have plenty on its plate right now with Avowed, The Outer Worlds 2 and possibly more in development at the time of writing.
Oh, and one other thing; we're very pleased that the team went with Pentiment as its name in the end. We don't want to know how often we'd mistype 'Palimpsest' - never mind our attempts to pronounce it!
Did you get around to playing Pentiment? Let us know what you thought of it down below.

One of the best games I played last year and no it doesn't need a sequel. Just makes it all the more special as it is.
I am looking forward to starting this, not sure when but I will get there eventually!
I wouldn't want a sequel, but I would like to see another game like that.
Pentiment was my favorite game of 2022, and it definitely doesn't need a sequel. Josh Sawyer is unquestionably one of my favorite creators in this industry. That guy is just crazy smart and can weave narratives like no one else.
thank god. 0/10 game.
Loved it and agree it doesn't need a sequel. When people complain about Game Pass quality games and cite Redfall as a failure, it's games like Pentiment that are a counterpoint to that where the risk and artistry shines through.
Not everything 'needs' a sequel - spiritual or otherwise - just because it is a 'success'. If it stands on its own and/or the 'creative' talent behind it has no real intention on making a sequel, then why should they?
What I like about the current set-up with Xbox is that MS are willing to let them experiment and/or make the games that they are 'passionate' about. I doubt Pentiment would have been made, at least not brought to market because it would be a difficult game to 'sell', but with Game Pass, it adds value as its another 'new' and 'unique' game to play.
I believe it costs more than 1 month of Game Pass - yet can play this and many other games for less.
Pentiment didn't really appeal to me - not because of the 'indie' style art direction, its the setting and game-play loop that doesn't really interest me enough to 'try' it yet because there is other games that appeal to me 'more' at the moment.
I am just glad that games like Pentiment, Grounded, HiFi Rush etc can exist. That devs are given an outlet for their 'Passion' projects, to try out new ideas, new concepts etc, to get their creations realised and out into the public space to find their Audience.
It's definitely not a game that wants a sequel. That said, I'll happily take dozens more games like this one!
I do find it depressing that nearly every achievement in the game has less than 10% completion and everything is rare. I know that's not helped by the fact that most of the achievements are mutually exclusive for every possible activity ruling out every other possible activity, but it also shows how many people bounced off the game which is really sad, because everyone wants their narrative driven single player games. Well, here it is, and then everyone left it.
Fans of the art style but looking for more humor may want to check out "Procession to Calvary".
@BrilliantBill I'm sure, though I don't see it as awards bait in any way, for exactly the presentation reason you mentioned. The "awards-bait" are the Naughty Dog/God of War games and their clones, through and through, cookie-cutter stamped from actual Oscars material.
A visual novel is no doubt niche, but, I'm still amazed how many were turned off by it. People talk all the time about how story is important, etc, etc. You're not going to get better story than visual novels. What people really mean by "story" is "movie", in our post-literacy world.
@Alexface I didn't like it at first but once you get past the slow start it gets good.
Loved it! One of the most interesting games I have played recently. Loved the art style and the story.
And like many have said - not everything should have a sequel. But I hope the devs got the funding and time to keep working on more titles like this (even if these type of games are niche).
