[Update - Thurs 7pm]: The same source at Insider Gaming is now reporting that Call of Duty 2023 will indeed be titled 'Modern Warfare III' - a direct sequel to 2022's Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. This year's game will reportedly contain "campaign, multiplayer, zombies, and a new Warzone 2 map during the title’s first season."
Just like yesterday's initial report, none of this is official yet, but it's looking very likely that this year's CoD release will be a direct extension of last year's title which came from developer Infinity Ward.
[Original Story - Weds 12pm]: At this point, it's no secret that another Call of Duty game will release this year. Despite earlier reports that the franchise might finally take a break, Activision themselves announced back in February that a "full annual premium release" was coming in 2023. Even so, a new report suggests we won't be hearing about the game until pretty close to release.
Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson says the current plan at ActiBlizz is to reveal 'Call of Duty 2023' in early August, with the reveal date currently set for August 1st. Much like Black Ops Cold War and Call of Duty: Vanguard, the reporter expects this year's game to be revealed as a Warzone in-game event - specifically within 2022's Warzone 2.0.
What's perhaps more exciting is that the series' long-time Zombies mode will reportedly feature from day one this year, with the mode absent from 2022's Modern Warfare 2. We're not sure what exact form 2023's Zombies mode will take, but Insider Gaming sources say it will be there 'on launch' in some fashion.
As for the overall theme of this year's release, Henderson doesn't really go into that here. However, it's been widely reported that CoD 2023 will be another Modern Warfare title of some sort being developed by Sledgehammer Games.
This is all unofficial info at the time of writing, so it's best to take these dates and details with a pinch of salt. Still, it's hardly surprising that a Call of Duty game will release this calendar year - we'll just have to wait a little longer to get confirmation directly from Activision & Co.
