FromSoftware has officially announced an upcoming expansion for its 2022 mega hit, Elden Ring. While further details are thin on the ground at the moment, we have a name, and a pretty incredible piece of concept art - shown above.
The team says that 'Shadow of the Erdree' is "currently in development" at FromSoftware, roughly a year on from the main game's launch.
"Rise, Tarnished, and let us walk a new path together. An upcoming expansion for Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree, is currently in development. We hope you look forward to new adventures in the Lands Between."
Yep, that's about all we know so far. There's no release window right now, or any other details on what to expect from the DLC, but rest assured, Elden Ring is expanding in the near future.

@Kaloudz 100% worthwhile. Some of their very best content.
@Kaloudz Depends what you are expecting. Most are 4-8 hours (Ariandel, Artorias, Old Hunters) but that is on their previously more linear games. Elden Ring could be different/longer.
Importantly the quality is as good as the main games, many DLC from other devs aren't and feel like the B team, or junior devs, worked on it.
Some of my favourite boss fights and music are from FromSoft DLC. Ludwig, the Holy Blade both as a boss and the music is EPIC! Also Artorias, Lady Maria, Kos, etc. Some of the best From has to offer.
@themightyant @Kaloudz 100% agree with mightyant. I rarely bother with DLCs, but FromSoft's are something else (the only disappointments I can think of were Dark Souls 2, but that can be said of the game as a whole to be fair). The quality is almost always as good or better than the base games and sizeable. Bloodborne's in particular is outstanding, and they tend to be a step up in terms of challenge. Honestly, the games don't tend to feel complete without them, so this has got me incredibly excited.
Shadows of the Empire.. i mean Erdtree
Nice! Need me some more Elden Ring.
This is great but I didn't even finish the base game yet 😁. It also makes me sad that it's now pretty much certain, my favourite From Soft game Sekiro will not be revisited anytime soon if at all 😔...
That's great news. My stupidly over-levelled character is ready and waiting!
I'm crap at these games I'll admit, but being able to grind my character up to such a high level meant I could take out everything without any online help, just like I wanted it.
I look forward to jumping in again
Did they just nick the Shadow of Mordor/War font?
@Kaloudz They are definitely expansion packs rather than dlc.
So what form will this expansion take? FromSoft usually create a brand new area that's warped to from the main game. But as ER is open-world, will they shoot for something different this time?
Cannot wait to play this. Definitely GOTY last year. No game even came close. They definitely set the bar very high with this game. I'm sure the DLC will be great.
@Kaloudz They are essential, I would say the only expansions in recent memory better would be for Witcher 3. Just like the Witcher 3's expansions, they often exceed their base games.
Hype meter is at a 10 right now, I really want to play through the whole game again, I've been waiting for this!
@Titntin This would be my ideal strategy. Alas I jumped off out of frustration very early on. How long would you say it took to accomplish such a build? I'd like to have another go at Elden Ring with this sort of outcome in mind.
@PeteyPiranha Hi my friend. I used guides to help start me off and chose a magic build because I could try and stay out of harms reach! I completed the game three times to get all the achievements (though I played it on PS5 so it was to get platinum trophy) - 2nd and 3rd run throughs are much quicker of course. My save file is at 240 hours, but I am notoriously slow with this stuff and I'm sure someone else could do the same in maybe 140
I hope you do jump back in and get to enjoy it. It really is worthy of the praise it gets, but you need to see a lot of it before you understand why
@Titntin Thanks for taking the time to respond! I am early enough in the game to focus on a magic build, so perhaps I will start there. I'm not so much of a trophy hunter myself, but I really would like to dig back into it and get a better grasp of what makes it such a great game. And eventually say I conquered it. Have never been a Souls guy, but most people say Elden Ring is the most accomodating place to start for beginners.
Thank God. The Lands Between were paltry and frankly felt claustrophobic. A little more terrain to cover would be nice!
@PeteyPiranha Im the same, ive never managed to play another souls game for any length of time, and usually fail on the second level for games like Nioh. With a starter guide for elden ring ensuring I at last started with some decent weapons armour and skills, I could start to build from there, albeit slowly!
Good luck!
@nofriendo Did you not even get to the point where you open th map out fully? It's hard to believe that anyone who played the game through could consider the map 'paltry'. Its about 10 times the size of the original map once it opens up.....
@Titntin Was meant as a joke as I'm 100 hours in and still discovering new areas. You're right enough, it's massive!
@nofriendo lol. Went right over my head! 🤣
Can't wait...
Lets roll on to release date...
(It is saddening to see that Elden Ring is never been part of Game Pass Ultimate though... It is probably the biggest missing part of Game Pass Ultimate)
