Has it really been almost a year already since Elden Ring arrived on Xbox? It certainly doesn't feel that way, with FromSoftware's latest epic lasting long in the memory of many players. Oh, and by many players we mean many players.
Publisher Bandai Namco has revealed that Elden Ring has now sold a whopping 20 million units since its arrival last February. Given the hardcore nature of FromSoftware's style of video game, this is a super impressive feat.
"Since its release on February 25th, 2022, Elden Ring continues to spark theories and discussions as tarnished from all around the globe explore the Lands Between, piecing together characters and events to reveal a deep and mysterious lore.
Warmly welcomed by players and critically acclaimed, the title received various awards throughout the year. Both Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc. and FromSoftware, Inc. are very thankful for each and every player stepping into this world."
That's not to mention that Elden Ring is an entirely new IP also, with no literal links to Dark Souls in its title. Sure, core gamers know what to expect from the Dark Souls developer at this stage, but to sell 20 million copies worldwide, it must have garnered very broad appeal as well.
Whatever the method, Bandai Namco and FromSoftware will likely be very pleased with this huge sales milestone. An 'Elden Ring 2' is starting to seem a lot more likely isn't it?

@BrilliantBill Those examples still have 'Call of Duty' in their names though. If a casual player goes to buy Elden Ring it doesn't say Dark Souls anywhere.
Very impressive milestone this.
@Kaloudz What accessibility? Can't really think of any they added to Elded Ring compared to previous games to make it more accessible.
I haven't had this much fun in an open world games since Kingdom Come Deliverance. It's an absolute blast to play. And lot more forgiving than other FromSoftware games. I previously tried DS3 and Sekiro. But couldn't get past the first boss as I didn't know how to play this type of games. But Elden Ring really helped me get better and better as I progressed. Fine pacing brilliant combat as is customary. Story is bit boring but that's okay as it's not necessary in this kind of game. I have finished the game probably 4 times with different classes. And I finally got into DS3 and finished and enjoyed the game 3 more times. But Elden Ring is a triumphant achievement. Dedicated jump button and summons have really made the game approachable for new comer also. Glad they are getting the recognition they deserve. One of my all time favourite masterpieces.
I'm not sure if it being a new IP made that much of an impact, as I believe a significant number of people bought it for basically being "Dark Souls 4".
Well, it's probably the first game that I got 100% completion on (including achievements) and spent countless hours playing. First game also that I used the New Zealand region trick so I could play it a day earlier. I would say it's probably the best video game ever made.
A true masterpiece, now where are my expansions?!
@BrazillianCara Beat me to it, I was going to say something similar as it's barely a new IP. I think, if Elden Ring wasn't part of the Soulsbourne formula, I would be more inclined to call it a "new IP". Heck, the storyline is practically the same as Dark Souls with some slight variation.
Still an amazing game! Congrats to FromSoftware.
@Kaloudz That's been in the games since the first Souls. You've always been able to have people join and help.
@Wheatly Fast travel was helpful strictly for the issue Elden Ring introduced, that's to say the open world.
The open world made grinding and leveling up MORE difficult. No more ascetics to get nice boons. No running small areas over and over and we're easily accessible via bon fire.
Honestly, the easiest grinding on Elden Ring is in specific locations you have to actually get into rather than being able to fast travel to.
Ever since the original Demon's Souls magic has ALWAYS been overpowered. This is how you "pick a difficulty". Melee = Hard, Magic = Easy.
Even upgrading gear and pots is way more convoluted than prior entries.
Okay that's super impressive considering soul games usually only for niche audience, 20M is like nearing zelda games sales 😃
It's not a new IP it's open world dark souls lol
@wiiware Pretty sure only Breath of the Wild has ever achieved over 10 million. 20 million would be considered pretty good, even for Zelda.
This was the first game I pre-ordered since the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time because of the hype. The punishing difficulty level kept me coming back for more. I loved how Elden Ring didn't hold my hand and actually gave me a world to explore on my own. I also enjoyed that this punishing difficulty level opened up a wide community of gamers who would work together to find the best builds/strategies. I haven't felt this connected to the gaming community since my SNES.
To be fair this game was hardly a new IP, it's basically a continuation of the Soulsborne games that FromSoftware has built a massive fan following around.
@yohn777 I remember zelda botw sold about 29M, which is impressive considering the game rarely discounted.
"New IP." Riiiiight.
Deserved. One of the greatest games of all time.
