Following a recent developer interview with the two game directors on Redfall, we have to admit we're rather excited to go hands on with what the team describes as "Arkane blended with Far Cry 2 or Stalker". However, it sounds like the dev is a little bit wary of the title's day one Xbox Game Pass nature, despite no-doubt looking forward to wrapping up development.
That isn't to say the quality of the game won't be up to snuff on day one - we'd expect this developer to deliver on that front. The team is more wary of the sheer amount of players that'll have access to Redfall on release day.
"The pool that Game Pass offers is huge for us. It's kind of shocking, and scary in a way. Like, how many people are going to play Redfall in the first week? What if it's a lot more than we anticipated… we're going to get a lot of feedback very quickly, and a lot of people will see what we've spent the last few years on."
Game director Harvey Smith goes on to mention Redfall's pandemic-era development, and how the game has become intrinsically linked with that experience for the teams involved.
"Redfall is our pandemic game, man. It's easy to forget now, but there were dark days during the pandemic. People on my team were sitting at home alone, losing their minds because we didn't have vaccines yet, and nobody was sure what it meant for their kids and for the economy.
The team carried each other through it all; Zenimax, Bethesda, and Microsoft were very good to us during that difficult time. Now that we're on the other side of it, the last thing I got to do here is ship Redfall."
We can understand the fear of launching such a project straight onto a service with tons of potential players, but we must admit, we're very very glad that Redfall is an upcoming Xbox Game Pass title. We feel we're due a few of those from Xbox Game Studios!
Is Redfall one of your most anticipated Game Pass launches for 2023? Let us know down below.

It’s interesting launching on a service like GP.
Of course most will download and Microsoft will say something like 10million have played it etc.
But it doesn’t mean much, could have downloaded played for 30 minutes not liked it and left the game. Weird stats really shrouded in mystery.
Don't really like these 4 player co op games...been to many but i am more optimistic with it being Arkane
@Dezzy70 I just hope the game us good. If it's good, I don't care what the stats are, they're not going to effect my enjoyment of Redfall either way.
I wasn't interested really thinking it was a multiplayer-focused co-op game like Left 4 Dead etc but the recent interviews have me intrigued so I'll definitely be giving it a go on Game Pass
@Dezzy70 that's why it's more interesting to look at the achievements trackers instead, see how much percentage of players have completed certain landmarks like chapter 1 or 2 achievements etc. If after a year Microsoft say 20 million people have played redfall but only 5% have got the achievement for completing chapter 1, that's how you know if the games did well or not.
This goes for games that don't launch on gamepass either and games on playstation plus, just because games in a subscription service have a load of players, that doesn't mean they are good or keep the players engaged that they want to come back to it. To me player figures mean nothing.
@Moonglow
This is true but it makes Microsoft feel better and boast, when it’s not really full game play or a purchase stat.
The only real GP figure is how many full paying customers GP has, that is what makes the business the money.
@NeutronBomb
Absolutely, it’s the game being very good that definitely counts first and foremost.
The more very good and especially new games you get in GP, the more subscribers it will get.
@StylesT
I believe it has fully playable singer player solo campaign. I don’t think you have to do co op, or have AI companions.
@StylesT It seems its more like Borderlands where you can pick your character and that's locked in for the duration and you'll never see any other characters if you don't want...
However, you can also play co-operatively with up to 3 others, combining your abilities and playing with the mechanics and systems Arcane are known for.
Its really up to you - you can play if through solo with 'each' character and/or team up with friends and play co-operatively...
I think with Game Pass it’s more important than ever to make it play well on day 1. Plus there’s less pressure to launch on a certain date for sales so just take the extra time to get it right.
I don't get why there's so much hype for this game. From what I've seen, it's a 4-player co-op, probably with gear and whatnot so you can do the same thing at a higher level. After that, it's probably more of the same, not in matchmaking because no comms, get frustrated, uninstall and forget 2 weeks after launch.
Also, being an adult means having responsabilities. Getting 4 adults to play the same game at the same time? Fiasco. In my book: dead on arrival.
I like what arkane does so I'll be playing solo to start then I'll play co-op not a big co- op guy so of it's possible I play solo first in the games that allow it.But regardless of what numbers it puts up I think this will be one of game pass biggest & crucial years! They got a lot of big releases coming up this year.hopefully they are all good!?!? I'm really hoping s.t.a.l.k.e.r.2 & starfieid & redfall are what I think they are.
Couldn't they have titled it something scarier, like Bloodfall or something? Lol
Also, maybe we should all agree to stagger our play times in the first week, so that we're not all scheduled to play literally right when it launches.
@StylesT 4 player co op is awesome....nothing better imo you get friends and go to town
cant wait to jump in, hope its better then the horrible Back4Blood...
@StylesT The team stressed that it is very much a single player game (like all Arkane games) with a multi-player mode.
