Polish developer CD Projekt Red has finally revealed the release date for its next-gen update to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt! The game's free Xbox Series X|S upgrade launches December 14th, more than seven years after the game first arrived on Xbox One.
The Witcher 3 Next-Gen has been announced for over two years at this point, having seen multiple delays since 2020, with the final pushback granting the update a Q4 2022 release window. Well, it's looking like CDPR will just about hit that date!
In a press release, CDPR confirmed that the new version of The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt for Xbox Series X|S will feature "dozens of visual, performance, and technical enhancements" including ray tracing, faster loading times and "a variety of mods integrated into the experience". Even the Xbox One version will be getting improvements as well on December 14th, although specifics on this have yet to be revealed.
We've not seen the Xbox Series X|S version running just yet, but that's about to change as well. The dev will be hosting multiple livestreams next week, showcasing the new versions in action ahead of launch.
Is it time to head back into the huge world of The Witcher 3 next month? Let us know if you'll be doing so down below.

I have been waiting to play the game until the update. Excellent!
I've been trying to hold off playing it again waiting for this update glad it's finally got a date.
@cburg Same here. It looks great before - can't wait to see the upgrade on SX.
Looking forward to the part where they completely change what Geralt looks and sounds like halfway through the game, just like the TV show
Bought the game a few weeks back for £6.50 on cd keys ready for this upgrade.
Why are so many developers and publishers still calling XSX/XSS and PS5 ”next-gen”? They have been current gen for two whole years now!
Besides that pet peeve, it’s nice to have a release date for this. I haven’t played Witcher 3 yet, so maybe it’s finally time after this update. I didn’t like Witcher 2, but I’ve heard that 3 is much better.
Time to reinstall for the update. Ready to beat the game.
@IronMan30 I think it might be a seperate Series native version so prob best to hold off until it is confirmed
@Darylb88 it says "update" and iirc, they said it was free but I could be wrong.
@Kaloudz 2nd, but the first was on the switch which I also bought digitally. The visuals aren't the best and looks mega blurry in some areas. I got to the point where you play as the girl and kill some werewolf.
For £6.50 though I didn't mind double dipping, I don't mind taking the loss that I paid for the switch version.
@IronMan30 Yeah the wording is a bit confusing. I know for PS there will be a seperate PS5 version to download but the Xbox version may just get you to download the whole game again or download that version from scratch. Re-downloading the whole game now may be fruitless to save time unless you have very fast internet
@Kaloudz not yet, they will be revealing the new look for the first time next week. Either way it will look better than the switch version lol even the ps4 version eclipses it.
I’ve been waiting years for a second play through…this can’t come soon enough!
@Darylb88 the verge seems to think it's free.
Fwiw, I have 1 gb/s internet. I'll still probably wait until mid-December to do it.
@IronMan30 Oh yeah it's def free if you got the Xbox One version disc or digital.
@Spaceman-Spiff Yeah I'm really pissed off about that. I'm not even going to watch the show anymore. I actually cried a little bit when I heard the news. Henry Cavill absolutely nailed it.
GDmit I'm gonna have to play thru this game a third time aren't I...
I have it on PS4, but since I'll never have a PS5 I might just buy it on my Series S and get the free upgrade.
"faster loading times"
Could load times get any faster? The current game loads so fast now (on Series X), the assets pop in while you play! LOL!
I guess, now assets will load too.
Im so ready for this. I purchased this game in advance for this and just waiting on the update.
Anyone heard if the user interface will be revamped?
CDPR menu systems in every game I've played are horrendous! Trying to manage inventory, follow quests, level up character, etc is unnecessarily God awful confusing pile of mess.
Granted think reason is they develope for PCs first. And I'm a console player that think games like skyrim and fallout have superior menu interfaces. But that's me.
@GuyinPA75
While I don't disagree with your assessment, the game was released on May 15, 2015. They gave free updates for last gen mid-gen console updates, and now they are giving a free update to current gen consoles. It is 6.5 years from release and providing free updates. This is great support for the game they put out. We should be happy with this kind of support not talking about any negatives.
@Darylb88 It's a free update. And PS and Xbox went different routes when it comes to upgrading between generations, where I believe Xbox games can simply be upgraded to a Series S|X version (mean to have seen this in previous titles which got a Series S|X update).
@heksesang Ah I see thought so
Didn't they scrap the whole rebuilt everything that was done by a third party like...6 months ago?? This seems awfully rushed. I'm gonna guess this is all AI up scaling or they just straight ripped whatever the third party did.
@NeoRatt Not talk about negatives? So my issue with the user interface system in ALL the CDPR games I've played are terrible and really detracts from the game is not a relevant topic to bring up? And how was it negative when I even shared believe the issue stems from they develop from PC starting point first. But I can say the last update for cyberpunk was big for me as not get, dizzy, eye strain, and headaches with the graphics patch.
But, hey if you are a CDPR fanboy that's cool. I get it. My guess you really applauded the "free DLC" Witcher 3 received that was basically 10 outfits to make Triss and Yeniffer look more slu**y.
@GuyinPA75
The game was delivered to great critical and gamer reception as its sales proved. Yes Witcher 3 could've been better like any other game ever could've been better.
I am not talking about Cyberpunk. Cyberpunk was a complete fiasco on Day One. I won't be buying another CDPR game without positive gamer feedback after release. And even then I will wait, because I feel they owe me for suffering through that mess.
But, Witcher is a great game. And asking for a menu redesign for free 6.5 years after release is kind of like asking for a car manufacturer to install a dashboard in your car after you owned it for 6.5 years. The Witcher was not littered with bugs. It was delivered as a really good game with some fundamental flaws. One of them being the menus. Ya, if they charged gamers for the new release, absolutely it needs a revamp. But this upgrade is a freebie, they have no obligation to change how the game functions on a free update.
