Although it isn't a totally new release, so we didn't initially include it in our November 2022 Xbox Game Pass roundup, Microsoft Flight Simulator is getting a new version on Game Pass today in the form of the 40th Anniversary Edition!
This isn't just a small update, either. The 40th Anniversary Edition of Flight Sim introduces helicopters to the game for the first time, along with gliders and a "highly detailed, true-to-life airliner". Here's a list of what you can expect:
Historical Aircraft:
- Wright Flyer
- Ryan NYP (“Spirit of St. Louis”)
- Douglas DC-3
- De Havilland Canada DHC-2-Beaver
Helicopters:
- Bell-407
- Guimbal Cabri G2
Gliders:
- DG Flugzeugbau LG8-18
- DG Flugzeugbau DG1001E neo
True-to-Life Airliner:
- Airbus A310
Along with this, some classic MFS airports are also making their debuts in the 40th Anniversary Edition.
You'll find all the Xbox Game Pass release times below, along with some more information:
"The 40th Anniversary Edition, a completely free offering for those who already own Microsoft Flight Simulator or play it via Xbox Game Pass, is a comprehensive celebration of the franchise with both a tribute to our past as well as an introduction to new and highly anticipated aircraft types."

*Microsoft Flight Simulator is getting a new version."
Does it include everything? Can we replace the existing version with this one?
@Banjo- I assume it's just going to upgrade the old version to the new one, but haven't seen any confirmation just yet.
@FraserG I hope so.
@FraserG it was just an upgrade when they went from standard to game of the year edition.
@elpardo1984 Yep, certainly was.
I bet its just an Upgrade and if you haven't yet downloaded, then this will 'replace' the standard edition.
Even if you bought the Disc version at launch, you'll get the 40th anniversary update.
40yrs of Microsoft Flight Simulator - that's longer than Sony have been involved in the Gaming industry. Not really my thing, but you have to congratulate the franchise for its longevity...
Glad to see this get more content. While it's too technical to keep my interest for more than a short while it's one of the few games on Xbox that I think is properly "next gen".
A true to size planet earth with, mostly, accurate terrain and textures with buildings, traffic, and live weather conditions is pretty impressive.
I love Flight Sim but i wish it didn’t treat gamers like they are clued up with how to navigate a flight! Would love to be able to type Grand Canyon, Pyramids, Niagra Falls, Mount Snowdon, etc an it puts a cursor on a map an gives ya a guide like in games like Grand Theft Auto. Would make it so much more enjoyable to play.
