It's already been a great week for new releases on Xbox! We're only on Wednesday, but we've already awarded an "Outstanding" 10/10 score to the upcoming arrival of Persona 5 Royal, while Tuesday's addition of A Plague Tale: Requiem received an "Excellent" 9/10 from us as well, serving as two of the best games on Xbox Game Pass in ages!
In fact, both have made their way into Metacritic's top ten Xbox games of 2022 list, with Persona 5 Royal seriously threatening to overtake Elden Ring in the number one spot as more reviews roll in over the coming days and weeks.
There are a couple of caveats with this list, but first, let's take a look at what we have:
- Elden Ring (96)
- Persona 5 Royal (95)
- The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe (93)
- Cuphead in the Delicious Last Course (92)
- Rogue Legacy 2 (90)
- Deathloop (89)
- Immortality (88)
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge (87)
- A Plague Tale: Requiem (85)
- Tunic (85)
In regards to the latter two positions, A Plague Tale: Requiem and Tunic aren't the only games to have received an 85 Metascore, so in order to create a top ten, we picked the two games with the largest number of reviews for Xbox. However, we could have also added OlliOlli World, Citizen Sleeper, Forza Horizon 5: Hot Wheels and Destiny 2: The Witch Queen, so there are plenty of contenders!
We'll return to this list once again at the end of the year to analyse the very best Xbox games of 2022 (according to Metacritic), but in the meantime, do you agree with it so far? Let us know down in the comments below.

They are not Xbox games though are they? Almost everything is multi platform?
They are the highest rated games that are on Xbox, but that's very different!
Edit: Several people have now told me its not different at all and I've conceded the point!
Regardless, it does show that there's been plenty of good stuff to get your teeth in to, even if you could play most of it elsewhere too.
Most of these are Gamepass and I'd suggest a list of best Gamepass titles would be better and have more relevance for showing off the delights of the platform.
I'm as frustrated as anyone that there remains little first party to celebrate, but when you see the delights that have been brought our way this year by GP, you can hardly feel short-changed
Hoping a similar list next year will show the expected first party titles!
6 out of the Top 10 on Game Pass for the win.
@Titntin How are these not Xbox games? All are on Xbox, that's the very definition of an Xbox game. lol
What you are talking about are Xbox exclusives or Xbox first party games which is the different thing altogether. Though I wholeheartedly agree there had been a relative dearth of first party games this year. Here's hoping for better in 2023.
Last year we had more exclusives than this year, and they were rated higher than PS5's exclusives on Metacritic. This year we have this rock-solid list of Xbox games. Who can complain when most of them are on Game Pass and Series X is the most powerful console in the market? Just think of the upcoming games being developed by Xbox Game Studios!
@themightyant
If a title is described as an Xbox game, the implication is its tied to that platform, not a multiplat. Most of these could also be called PlayStation games too.
I guess 'Xbox games' and 'games on Xbox' has been equated here and in your reply, but they are not the same thing to me at all. Forza is an Xbox game. Spiderman is a PlayStation game.
Elden ring is a multiplatform game. Using langauge loosely is a slippery slope!
As I noted in my original comment, the fact so many good titles have been on GP is the big win for Xbox here! Yeah I'm hopeful we will see the 1st parties soon.
@Titntin I don't understand this mentality at all - an Xbox game is a game that can be played on Xbox. I don't just play 1st Party AAA exclusives on Xbox, and I'll play a game on Game Pass over spending money just to play on PS - hence I wouldn't buy Deathloop for example on PS5 when it released knowing I could play it on Game Pass eventually.
I can't play more than 1 game at a time so I couldn't care less who makes, publishes and/or whether its 'exclusive' or not, I just care about whether I can play the games I want to on the 'Platforms' I have. When I look at what games I can play, I don't just look at 1st party exclusives, but all the games I can play. The only thing a multi-platform game offers is 'choice' on where to play - and that can be an easy decision based on cost, performance, features etc - so if I can play 'free' on Game Pass, I'm playing on Xbox so I play the Xbox version of that game.
And as for 'Xbox game' vs 'Game on Xbox', it must annoy you then when there are Polls, articles etc all talking about the best PS3 games, best PS5 games of the year, or best Xbox games when most of the list happens to be made up of multi-platform titles...
Of the top 6 only 1 is a full game/2022 release. The others are 4 2022 ports of a 2012, 2017, 2021 and another 2021 game and a new dlc.
"They are not xbox games" looool what???? Then why are they playable on Xbox???? It's a game that has been developed using Xbox dev kit, it's using code that only Xbox can interpret, if you put that disc in Playstation it won't work. So it is an xbox game.

Yes. But Elden Ring is also an Xbox game and a PlayStation game, it can be both, that's not loose language.
But it's not an Xbox EXCLUSIVE game, omitting this crucial word is loose language, and I agree it's a slippery slope.
This one's in your head mate.
It’s a good list of games and goes to show you that Gamepass is adding good titles, but it also goes to show that Xbox really doesn’t have exclusives this year. If we were to talk about exclusively Xbox games, Immortality would be the top pick, and I’m curious what the rest of the list would look like. All great titles though. The only one I haven’t beaten out of the list is Persona 5.
As a sidenote and perhaps personal problem, with my own GotY list, I’m struggling on deciding whether or not to include Stanley Parable though. I mean, it’s fantastic, but is it really a 2022 title? Know what I mean? Ah, it’s not really a big deal in the grand scheme of life, but I’ve deliberated quite a bit on this topic.
@themightyant Fair enough. Psyconaughts 2 is a PlayStation game.
I had thought if you call something an ABC game you imply is belongs to ABC, not that it 'is also available on'. However, its an aside to the main conversation here, so I'll move on and thank you for correcting my misunderstanding of the English language. 😊
To anyone else concerned at my misunderstanding, thank you for correcting me and I'll concede the point.
I just think the list would show off the format in a better light if it were best gamepass tiles, or some other way of listing titles that showed the advantage of Xbox.
Elden Ring was the best game I have ever played (4 times over). I know it is not for everyone but for me, wow what a masterpiece.
Still haven't played The Stanley Parable!
@darkswabber Persona 5 Royal came out in 2020 in the West, not 2017.
@Titntin I agree with you 100% that they are not just on xbox that is a fair point. The thing for me is I just prefer the xbox from the controller to the ease of xbox multiplayer. I bought a ps4 just to play the show now that it's on Xbox Ill probably never buy another PlayStation as for whatever reason their exclusive stuff never much got me to excited
@Titntin The title got me too, thought it was going to be a list of the top 10 games developed or published by Xbox. Lazy article anyway, anyone can go to metacritic and see this. A list of Xbox developed, published or exclusive titles would have been more interesting to me.
