Well, out of nowhere Bethesda has announced a free update for Fallout 4, bringing the 2015 RPG onto Xbox Series X and S as a native current-gen title. The team hasn't provided much detail on what to expect, but some key improvements have been revealed for the game's 2023 release.
First up, the Xbox Series X|S version will contain "performance mode features for high frame rates" along with "quality features for 4K resolution gameplay"; these seem to be the two big reasons behind the upgrade. Bethesda says the port will also introduce various bug fixes, along with some bonus 'Creation Club' content.
"Prepare for the future: A next-gen update is coming to Fallout 4! Coming in 2023, this free update will be available for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Windows PC systems, including performance mode features for high frame rates, quality features for 4K resolution gameplay, bug fixes and even bonus Creation Club content!"
We're a bit taken aback by this announcement to be honest, especially as it's hidden in a general Fallout anniversary post that's mostly focused on Fallout 76. The game also supports FPS Boost on the Xbox side of things, so higher performance is already featured on Series X and S!
Still, the resolution boost will be a welcome addition, along with whatever else the team delivers with the upgrade in 2023. We didn't expect any Fallout 4 news today, but here we are!
Will you be replaying Fallout 4 once the current-gen upgrade hits? Let us know down below.

Great news, I've never played Fallout 4 so I'll definitely put it on my list for next year.
Currently in the middle of Fo4 and playing with FPS Boost, this is great news to hear!
I mean, it plays great already due to the uncapped frame rate, but sure, I think we'll all be happy with native-level updates.
Now give us Fallout 5.
I wish I liked this game. I sincerely do, but I just didn’t care for how they overhauled the gameplay. At this point I’d be more interested to see Obsidian return to Fallout.
No knocks against those excited for this though, always nice to see native next gen upgrades for games people love.
Great news, Fallout is one if my all-time favourite franchises 😁.
It is important to note that Bethesda and by extension Microsoft are doing this for the PS5 as well. I believe this is commendable, well done 👍.
Thank goodness! In it's current state, Fallout 4 is pretty much unplayable when you're exploring Boston, it crashes all the bloody time.
I really hope this is a free smart delivery update.
This sounds very like Skyrim Anniversary Edition, which I thinks a spectacular bundle. I have high hopes for this as Fallout 4 was downplayed by some, but remains one of Bethesda's best releases to date.
What I really like about this announcement is Microsoft's steadfast commitment to the entire user base. Including PS owners.
Also, Microsoft is continually keeping its key IPs up to date with free updates. Shows they are using great development tools that transcend generations of hardware and easy to update.
Remaster Fallout 3 and new vegas for all consoles
it's about damn time
@Dr_Luigi need a native version on PS, and they could put it on switch. Microsoft wants people to be able to play anywhere so it would be a help for that
@Sol4ris I’d charge PlayStation gamers to upgrade, a lot of them support the practice so take advantage just like Sony do.
Don't get me wrong, Yay, but given all the attention 76 is getting I was expecting it to get an XS upgrade.
@Fenbops Hear! Hear!
@Fenbops
Right?
Sony supporters seem to suffer a bit from the Stockholm syndrome, I mean they'll rather part with one of their kidney before criticising anything Sony related 😁.

@Rmg0731 Both of them already have FPS boost. Please stop encouraging more remasters / remakes
You mean they aren't charging $70 bucks and removing content? Well then ...
