In a recent segment on Major Nelson's Xbox podcast, the crew chatted all things Age of Empires with a member of the development team following the game's console announcement last week. The discussion led to us catching a new snippet of Xbox gameplay, which reveals a few new console-specific features.
The team has detailed a couple of control and UI changes that have been made to Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition on Xbox, in the hopes of making it a smoother experience on console. The dev says that during the porting process it was important to make sure nothing was ever more than "a couple of button pushes" away from the console player.
After launching on PC back in 2019, the Definitive Edition of Age of Empires 2 finally makes it way to Xbox Series X and Series S on January 31, 2023. Age of Empires 4's console release will then follow later on next year.
Is the console version of AoE2 shaping up nicely in your view? Come let us know your thoughts!

I'm stupid hype for this. Going to have to get a copy for my little sister who was a huge fan back in the day as well.
Age of Empires looks like the sort of game I’d burn away hundreds of hours on, but despite having them on Game Pass on PC I’ve never really tried them (too much of a struggle to get the wife off World of Warcraft). Really looking forward to this and IV coming to console.
I can't wait for this. The sheer number of campaigns in the definitive edition will keep my playing it all year.
Never thought this would become a reality, more than ready for some AoE goodness on console, given my PC is all but dead.
This looks like good fun. I never actually had the game back in the day, but played the Demo for hours
Remember when you'd get decent demos of games, and not just paying for "early access"?
It shouldn't be exciting being able to play a Y2K era PC game on a console, but, somehow, it is.
Anyone know if this supports mouse?
