Saints Row burst back onto the scene last month with a soft reboot of sorts on Xbox Series X and S. Well, we say 'burst' but more like limped; we didn't enjoy much about the series' latest entry. It doesn't seem to have done that well commercially either, at least in Europe.
GamesIndustry has posted its latest round of European sales data, for the month of August 2022. While some segments of data are missing, this chart broadly covers both physical and digital sales across the region. GTA 5, a game that launched in 2013, was the best-selling game in August, and it beat Saints Row during its launch month. Ouch.

Rockstar's last GTA game is a phenomenon rarely seen; it continues to sell gangbusters almost a decade after it first launched. That'll be helped by its multiple re-releases across generations, but still, this is no-doubt a disappointing return to the limelight for the Saints Row series.
The rest of the chart reflects a bit of a barren spell for AAA games, as a lot of these titles are from months and even years ago. Still, the release schedule should pick up as we hit the fall season, and then what looks to be a pretty stacked 2023.
Are you surprised to see GTA 5 beat 'Saints Row' in 2022? Let us know in the comments!

You know what they say. Get woke...
More surprised by Dishonored in 15th place, that released even before GTAV.
@Retron You’re probably going to get many comments now from those woke people not happy about that phrase.
Just wondering who does not have GTA 5 now? That’s bonkers for a game that’s nearly 10 years old to still be topping the charts.
@Techno92LFC I've never bought gta v either.
I bought the XSX version of GTA V earlier this year with MS rewards points. First time buying it, it's fine...
I dont think it GTA is doing huge numbers but Saints row doing really bad, Hopfully we'll never hear of this Saints row again.
It’s amazing to see how long GTA 5, Mario Kart 8, and Minecraft have been on the charts. The games have legs and continue to go up and down on the charts.
Bought GTA V on PS3 and PS4 and feel ashamed of myself for doing that. Good game but also feel like supporting it two times over is part of why we didn't get VI sooner. It's crazy that PS2 had GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas within a three or four year span but it's going to be a decade or more before getting from V to VI. Even the waits between SA and IV and IV and V weren't as bad.
@Gamer83
I'm in a similar situation. Had it on PS3, bought it again on PS4. I did end up selling my PS4 copy but then a few years later I bought it again digitally as it was on sale for next to nothing.
I point blank refuse to buy the remastered version for my Series X or PS5 though.
I guess people like us buying it multiple times are part of the problem but I'm genuinely baffled as to why so many people are still buying it now almost 10 years later
@Member_the_game
I didn't really get into the online aspect of the game but I'm convinced that's a huge part of, maybe even the main reason why, GTA V has remained such a huge deal.
Say what you will about GTA IV beating Saints Row, second place for Saints Row isn't at all bad when you look at the metacritic scores, reviewers gave it a 62-66 over all systems, but users gave it between a 1.6-3.0 over all systems... Sales wise they can't complain looking at those numbers
Some of those sales are probably buyers of the new Saints Row who said sod it I need me some GTA. Hadnt bought the next gen remaster and jumped on it.
@Member_the_game My guess is that it's the new generation of gamers that are buying GTA V now, we forgot that even though we played GTA V years ago, there's younger gamers who are buying it now who were too young to play it back in the Xbox 360 and Xbox One eras.
Who hasn't gotten this game yet? FFS, move on already.
