Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - that's the new one, not the 2009 one with exactly the same name - has been holding its multiplayer beta on Xbox over the weekend just past, and irate players have been taking to the internet in their droves to complain about the game's "Dead Silence" perk, claiming that it is, in fact, giving away their positions.
Yes, as reported by the lovely folk over at GamesRadar, and according to posts on the game's official Reddit, the perk, which should be hiding player positions by removing the sound of their footsteps, is actually getting them absolutely done in. Yep, apparently when you activate this particular perk the game makes a loud pinging sound to let you know it's successfully turned on, but sneaky enemy players are now zeroing in on the noise to get the drop on their wanna-be stealthy opponents. Oh dear (language warning!).
There have been a few other complaints with the multiplayer beta for Modern Warfare 2 so far, with another bug that fills the screen with smoke also being flagged up, but hey, that's what betas are for and it's good news for developer Infinity Ward that all this stuff is being recognized and dealt with before release.
Have you been playing Modern Warfare 2's beta? Has your life by cut short by an annoying ping that's given away your location? As always, let us know in the comments.

Funny thing is that they don't actually have the same name, the new one is Modern Warfare II, the old one is Modern Warfare 2, arabic vs roman numbers lol
I haven't played CoD since the original Modern Warefare 2 but thought I'd try out the Beta.
You know what, I had a great time!
It plays incredibly well and the myriad of game types means there's so much to play.
Seems like a winner to me 👍
Guy 1: "Let's give them a perk that silences them..."
Guy 2: "I added a ping sound so they can still hear themselves..."
Guy 1: "You did remember to keep it to just their client's audio?"
Guy 2: "No, why?"
[Dope slap]
@Zucaritas Nice catch.
I played the beta until I maxed out my level. There were some good and bad moments. The graphics look blurry compared to the last two releases but the progression of the weapon unlocks was interesting.
@Zucaritas The game was initially revealed around the 'II' format but things seem to have changed a little, outside the logo anyway. IW probably noted that MW2 is what'll get the searches (their Twitter has a ModernWarfare2 hashtag, for example)
@Zucaritas damn good catch
@Kezelpaso yeah, nice comment there, I was going that in every marketing that I saw they use the II and even that's how it appears on the xbox store
Man really had a blast with the beta. Amazing game! Really hyped for the release.
Another garbage CoD where you get punished for rushing and the only people playing are campers that aren't good at CoD and need safe spots to protect them.
This is not CoD. CoD died in 2019.
@Tasuki And those folks are the causal ones that buy the microtransactions, they buy a buffed out gun until it's gets nerfd at the next season, it's like these developers are offering a bag of dopamine too keep them engaged.
@Warriooh Exactly. Activision has basically sold the soul of CoD for money. I get it old school players aren't their intended audience anymore but it's still sad to see what they call CoD still. Maybe things will be better once MS takes over and we will get a real CoD game again but for now CoD is dead.
I’ve not really played COD multiplayer for years now, enjoyed Warzone so thought I’d give this beta a go. I really enjoyed it, I’m probably going to buy it now just on the back of this beta I had so much fun with it. Especially the invasion mode, felt a bit more tactical, with a bit more breathing room to play slower, it helps cos my reaction times aren’t what they were years ago haha.
I usually play Hell Let Loose, Insurgency Sandstorm, Battlefield and always found COD is too frantic for me but this one felt like a good balance.
So, is the new game a remake of the original, or a completely new story? Somewhat confused as I assumed it was a remake, in the same vein as MW1...
