At the time of its reveal back in 2018, there was quite a lot of attention surrounding the omission of a campaign mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. In a first for the series, Treyarch ultimately opted to ship Black Ops 4 without a single player campaign; the 'Blackout' battle royale mode filled that gap. Well, a substantial leak has now surfaced, detailing what exactly the California-based developer was building with its cancelled campaign.
Before Blackout came along, 'Career' was the game's third mode outside of Multiplayer and Zombies. It was developed as a “race to the finish” mode featuring two teams of two, where depending on the chosen faction, you'd have a completely unique set of missions, characters, and storylines. As is now the norm, it was supposedly set up as a live service that'd evolve over time, which would have been a first for a Call of Duty campaign.
According to the leak, missions were 20ish minutes long, spread across six different locations. Companions, based on the game's multiplayer specialists, also supposedly featured, alongside an XP-based progression system. We must stress that these details are part of a major leak, so take everything here with a grain of salt. However, the leak is backed up by a ton of concept art, from load screens and storyboards to map layouts and more.
Ultimately, the story mode was binned in favour of chasing the battle royale dream. We've got to admit, we thought the best thing about Black Ops 4 was Blackout, so we can't complain too much. Still, it would have been interesting to see this campaign mode come to life, as since then, we've seen some pretty 'traditional' single player modes within Modern Warfare, Black Ops Cold War, and last year's Call of Duty: Vanguard.
What do you make of all this? Would you have liked to see this campaign happen? Leave your thoughts below!

Personally more interested if they are going to make Modern Warfare 3: Remastered. Very annoying to have the first two but not the final act of the trilogy. Does the leak say anything about that? Activision have denied it so far.
Honestly... they need to stop remaking games. Every game that comes out should be a brand new game and brand new story that is also built using the newest technology available for the most current generation console.
Actually I don't think it was a first for the series because I think bo3 launched without a campaign & then patched it in later
@themightyant we need the multiplayer component for modern warfare 2 just without the lootboxes they added to modern warfare remastered
Scrapping campaign and charging full price for the crap left behind guaranteed one thing. That they weren't gonna get a penny of my money. Funny how these companies won't learn that removing campaign hurts them financially. Look at Battlefield 2042. If it had a campaign it would have a selling point even though the mp is broken.
@Would_you_kindly wrong. Black Ops 3 had 2 different versions. On Xbox 360 and ps3 it was multiplayer only..on Xbox one and ps4 it launched with a campaign. They claimed the older consoles couldn't handle rendering the campaign. Yet charged full £39.99 for the rehashed x360 version.
That still doesn't sound like a story campaign, just another mode. It honestly sounds like Battlefield 1's "stories," which in my opinion were kinda crap.
Honestly though, I just played through BLOPS3's campaign and... Eh... I dunno what Treyarch was doing with that one but I wouldn't have been very excited for BLOPS4 after that mess.
@Resi32 AHH I didn't know it released on 360 & PS3 I've only got it on PS4 but heard there was no campaign for it so I assumed when I played it & it had a campaign it had been patched in
@XxEvilAshxX I don't like battlefields multiplayer but I loved the single player for battlefield 1 it was just way too short even compared to cod's campaign
