Look, this writer right here didn't expect to see it, but MultiVersus is kind of blowing up. The Smash Bros-like always looked as though it could provide a solid alternative to the Nintendo series on Xbox, but I never expected it to be this popular right out of the gate.
And by 'this popular', we mean the most popular free game on Xbox in the UK and the US. MultiVersus is currently beating the likes of Fortnite, Fall Guys and Warzone at the top of the free-to-play pile on Xbox!
It's also important to note that MultiVersus is still in 'beta' at present, before a full release is expected in the near future. We say 'beta' because, well, Fortnite remained in the same development stage for years before Epic finally labelled it as a fully-released 1.0 title.
It'll be interesting to see where things go from here, and if this fighter can remain as popular as it is right now on Xbox. Pure Xbox editor Fraser has been keen to remind us that he saw this one coming, and our staff writer PJ O'Reilly has enjoyed his time with it so far, so yeah, maybe MultiVersus is here to stay!
Have you tried WB's free-to-play fighter yet? What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments.

This is where and interesting if Nintendo dumped hardware and focused on releasing theirs games multi-platform would they make more money.
Been playing a lot more of this than I expected. Definitely a Bugs main!
Never been able to play the game always disconnect and it says my internet connection is the problem but I have no problems at all with my internet. Anyway too busy playing xenoblade chronicles 3 at the moment.
I think WB have really done it. It’s a great game, I was hesitant at first thinking it was just going to be another crappy Smash-clone.
It’s going to be interesting to see if they can keep things rolling.
@Dezzy70 I have little doubt that Nintendo would be no worse off if it ditched hardware and instead developed for PlayStation, Xbox and PC. It would do wonders for game preservation too, as we wouldn't have countless proprietary media and gimmicky control schemes to contend with. Imagine being able to just play old Nintendo games on PC without needing to resort to emulation and piracy.
@Relygon I'm giving Multiversus a go later tonight. My only concern at this point is how egregious is the monetisation going to be?
@Markatron
They probably discuss these things at high level board meetings.
Imagine the MK8 sales if sold on PlayStation, Xbox and pc with also online cross play.
Especially if as well as showing country like it does it showed what device. We could have PlayStation vs Xbox vs pc etc.
Maybe one day.
@Markatron I don’t really have anything to compare with, long time since properly played any f2p game.
You can earn most of the stuff with in-game currency except for some skins and stuff like that.
The grind for in-game currency seems pretty atrocious to me but again maybe that’s the norm for f2p.
It plays like a charm, but I would have really liked it to play against friends on the same Xbox. Sadly, you can't login to the game with Guest accounts, so it's a lot of hassle.
@Dezzy70 Do not think that will happen, especially since they make loads of money on hardware, contrary to Sony and Xbox.
@Sveakungen
Probably not just a nice thought.
One day, one console plays all.
