Earlier this week, we shared a report that Rockstar had apparently decided not to progress with remasters of Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption, and Kotaku is now reporting something very similar.
As per Kotaku's sources, the current plan for Rockstar is to focus primarily on development of GTA 6, having "shelved all remakes" following the negative reception to GTA: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition last year.
"...the publisher is hoping that folks will forget all about the critically panned and botched classic GTA remasters released last year..."
The outlet says that, according to its sources, Rockstar had plans to remaster Red Dead Redemption around the time that GTA: The Trilogy's existence was leaked last year, but those plans have now changed. However, it's seemingly still possible that these remastered projects could happen, but probably not until after GTA 6 has shipped.
As for GTA 6 itself, details are very minimal right now, with Rockstar simply confirming development is "well underway".

Great positive news
Finally some dam common sense and focusing on a new game and one new game for the most of the studio to focus on.
Am I dreaming. 😂
Still wish they’d at least enable 60 FPS on RDR 2.
@awp69 I know right? How hard can it be? Ubisoft have done it for several of their old games
Maybe if they'd tried to lovingly birth a remake trilogy baby rather than squeezing out a big fat trilogy turd they would have seen better sales.
Yeah, considering the trilogy remaster this was the right move. Wonder what this means for san Andreas VR for Quest 2
Well, if they had made a quality check...
"...the publisher is hoping that folks will forget all about the critically panned and botched classic GTA remasters released last year..."
No, we are not going to forget about it.
That's unfortunate. I think the proper lesson would have been to contract the projects out to better teams. They obviously went with the cheapest/easiest possible option on the trilogy.
One game per decade is a waste of their great franchises.
@Banjo- no, that's too logical.
Who'd have thought that a home console port based on the inferior hand-held versions would be received poorly when released as a remaster on home console?
Rockstar are working on the re-re-remaster of GTA5 for the PS6 until proven otherwise.
@IronMan30 Indeed.
I didn't think rockstar did the remakes, they just outsourced them
@ultraviolet I could be wrong but I got the impression they outsourced the trilogy remake and the GTA 5 for Xbox Series and PS5 was done in house.
@awp69 that will be additional $10 sir
@Tangerine thanks for the info, i've not done any research on the subject
I'd love to have seen RDR and GTA IV remakes, but considering the quarter assed attempt that the GTA Trilogy was I'm glad they're not bothering.
@SplooshDmg Agreed. I expect GTA6 to have a mere fig-leaf’s worth of single player content and be almost exclusively built around multi-player and selling in-game currency.
@SplooshDmg Yeah I thought that might have been it too. He probably wanted to focus on making the narrative for the next game while the higher ups wanted a new GTA Online.
GTA 6 by 2030? Doubt
