It's likely all hands on deck over at Bethesda Game Studios in order to get Starfield out ASAP, especially given its recent delay into 2023. However, as Starfield's main development period comes to a close, Todd Howard has confirmed that The Elder Scrolls 6 is being worked on.
In a new interview with IGN's Ryan McCaffrey, Howard was asked if the team took a different approach to Starfield development, given that they may never get a chance to make a sequel with The Elder Scrolls and Fallout sequels in the pipeline. Howard then touched on The Elder Scrolls 6 development, albeit very briefly. Here's a timestamp of the discussion:
So, yeah, The Elder Scrolls 6 is officially in pre-production following reports of a similar development timeline earlier this year. The good news is that once Starfield is out, the majority of the team will likely pivot onto full development for The Elder Scrolls 6. Just don't expect it to launch anytime soon!

Cool, can't wait to play it in 2035.
Hope they give us Fallout and Elder Scrolls remasters to play while we wait.
The good news is by the time TES6 is released we'll be playing cloud games with a neural interface plugged directly into our cerebellum. Though it'll be awkward experiencing it in neural-vision with only 4 voice actors, though.
It's exciting and depressing. The single most hype inducing series around for me, but....I don't know if I have enough lifetimes to wait for it.
@IronMan30 I'm taking that date with a grain of salt. I heard rumors of a delay.
@Richnj Don't worry, Skyrim UHD for XSZ/PS6 is all but confirmed
@Richnj No! Please no more Skyrim remasters! Bethesda, don’t listen! Make new content! NEW content!
Sorry, I really don’t understand the desire for remastering games. The past is great and all, but I’ll take new content over repeating old content any day. Besides, Bethesda games may feel old now, but they hold up well enough.
@somnambulance Elder Scrolls is more than just Skyrim.
And we know the new content is coming, and it's going to take years, a 3rd party studio can remaster a game in a fraction of the time and cost.
Besides Fallout and Elder Scrolls 1 and 2 not having xbox releases, there's still plenty of small QoL features and upgrades that could be done to Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3, and New Vegas.
Like, imagine having wide screen support on Morrowind.
The one thing that frustrates me about this, is that we had that Elder Scrolls 6 tease so long ago... WHY? If the game is only now in pre-production it means that ES6 was just vaporware at that point!!!
I wonder what will come out first… this, fable, perfect dark, halo co op/ray tracing…
Guess it doesn’t really matter, half of us will probably be dead.
@Tharsman I hear those early announcements can be for hiring purposes more than telling fans a game is in development. For instance developers in the job market might not have had interest in working for playground if they weren't into racing games but then they hear they are just starting to work on a Fable game.
Fans know that elder scrolls 6 is eventually going to be a thing but announcing it is starting development can be a beacon for people interested in working on it.
@Somebody early announcements can be for hiring purposes, but when this game was announced and the project didnt likely enter pre-production until recently... that makes no sense.
XBox stating they are actually working on a Perfect Dark that wont be out for 3 or more years? sure, at least that is already in active development.
@Richnj Fair enough. I’ll take Elder Scrolls 1 and 2 on Xbox and Morrowind could use a remaster with QoL improvements. I’ll give you that Morrowind is one of the greatest games of all time, but it’s pretty hard to recommend to anyone in 2022.
Hopefully, they get this bloody game out the door quickly. So that they can work on the one that people are actually asking for.
As for Fallout, I wish Microsoft would just give Obsidian the licence, now that they're all part of Xbox.
I know making these massive RPGs takes a lot of work, but you would think Bethesda would be big enough to have Elder Scrolls 6 far enough along that it wouldn't still be in pre-production along with making Starfield. Yikes, at this rate all the jokes above will come true, and frankly it's ridiculous. If you can't do more than one game at a time, give one of them to somebody else.
@somnambulance @Tharsman While it’s true some early announcements are for hiring purposes that isn’t really the case here. Bethesda are known for their lavish open world RPGs, devs already know exactly what they are about and knew they will be making ES6 eventually, this doesn’t change that.
No, to look at WHY these were shown so early, Starfield was also teased btw, at the Bethesda E3 conference in 2018 you have to look at the context. This was the show where they announced Fallout 76, a multiplayer game, and Elder Scrolls: Blades, a mobile game. Bethesda would have known that these would have been unpopular with their typical fanbase… and they were. To sweeten the show and tell their rabid fans they were still making games for them they teased both Starfield (which would have been in early or pre-production) and Elder Scrolls 6 to try and appease them.
Unless they manage to speed things up significantly ES6 would have likely been announced around a decade before it launched, now the same with Fallout 5. A shame really.
@Tharsman we don't really know how much work has been done on the game but they have reiterated that it's not coming soon. But that doesn't mean that they aren't looking for writers, artists, etc. It's been reported that pretty much every studio is struggling to get or keep talent. I don't think it's ever a bad time to get word out there that an opportunity to work on such a monumental project.
Talk about 1st world problems though for us to be so concerned about when is the right time to announce a game that everyone already knew was being or would eventually be made.
Welp since I upgrade my GPU (usually) when a new TES game comes out I better hope mine doesn’t conk out… might be a while.
