Bethesda's Todd Howard has been speaking to IGN today in a massive interview about all things Starfield, confirming during the discussion that the main story campaign in the game will take around 30 to 40 hours to complete.
This means, according to Howard, that the main campaign without any side content is around 20% bigger than games like Fallout 4 and Skyrim, simply due to having more quests included this time:
"This one’s ending up a little bit longer [than our previous games] and we may tune that some still. It’s more quests, so it might be 20% more than our previous ones."
Howard also mentioned during the interview that Starfield includes more handcrafted content than any other Bethesda game, it has four main cities including the biggest the studio has ever made, and its "unique" space combat is actually inspired by FTL: Faster Than Light and the classic MechWarrior series!
If you haven't watched it yet, don't forget to check out the brand-new gameplay of Starfield from the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase 2022, which we've highlighted elsewhere on Pure Xbox:

@A01 That’s not to say there won’t be towns and outposts on other planets but I do expect the majority of the planets are just there to mine materials and maybe have their own biomes.
More I hear about it the more promising it sounds. The ability to not only dog fight ships but also raid them - I really hope if you beat one in a dog fight you can get out of yours and go into the ruins of that ship…see the dead crew and get their back stories. Hear about how one guy was a day away from retirement etc
And modding! That’s going to be huge and really makes me view all these planets in a different light - hopefully they’ll confirm soon that console version to have full mod support.
It’s not all roses though… slightly disappointing you can fly when on the planets. I did start wondering why we had a cinematic play out every time they landed…makes more sense now. That’s a shame.
@A01 main story will be bigger than Skyrim… did you really struggle for things to do in Skyrim? There’s going to be just as many if not more side quests than previous Bethesda games too… so the 1000 planets are with nothing going on you probably never need to visit if you don’t want…or maybe they’ll be a purpose to them. Either way, this isn’t no man’s sky.
@A01 One city will be bigger than Skyrim itself apparently, so that sounds pretty awesome. If there are four main cities with a size similar to that, I think players are in for a real treat. I don’t know about you, but I know that I would never want to play a game that has 1,000 planets that are able to be fully explored, and with depth and variety. That sounds redundant and honestly like an absolute chore. I don’t know who would want to experience that. And I don’t expect a team like Bethesda to take the time to fully flesh out those planets - they would never get the game released. Lol.
Four main cities. Who know how many minor cities, plus whatever players decide to create.
One of my biggest complaints about FO4 base building was how restrictive the build areas were. I would be very happy if some of these planets are basically there just for me to create to my hearts content.
I'm still really, really looking forward to this game more than anything in a long time, but knowing you can't seamlessly go from space down to a planet is pretty disappointing. That was such a great feeling in a game like NMS.
Lmao. I love how people put this game on a pedestal even before a gameplay trailer and now the more news we get the more I feel like it's a lazy reskin of Fallout/Skyrim.
LMAO. Love how idiots call this game a lazy reskin of Fallout/Skyrim even before gameplay trailer has been released.
I’ve generally enjoyed the side content more in Bethesda games, so this timeframe to beat the main story is very welcomed to me. Hell, less would have been fine! Side quests and exploration have always been the key joy of Bethesda rpgs for me. Skyrim’s stories apart from the main narrative, for instance, were more interesting to me.
The hype is real, can’t wait for more juicy details over 2022 😎
This game keeps seeming more awesome.Tes, ftl, and MW in a single package. Todd, take my money. You know the account. I bought 76...
To think this looks more all life consuming than most GaaS and it's a true single player....
Starfield and Redfall seem to be more appealing since the showcase and have moved on well.
But I’m not getting carried away, 2 reasons.
Let’s see the games release first.
Let’s see the true game as a whole once released.
I come from a sort of more positive attitude than before.
See I’m used to seeing a preview of say:
Forza Horizon 5
Gears
Mario Odyssey
Uncharted 4
You really know those studios you know watching the preview what you are getting the gameplay the quality the titles bring and according to critical reviews once those games got released, we got it correct, they are top end AAA games in all areas.
With Starfield and Redfall we really haven’t seen that much and of course them not being sequels like the games above, you never can really tell until the games are released.
