Not sad I missed this show
@themightyant Not entirely. New trailers would give the impression they were showing games that weren't already at the show, which amounted to maybe 2 or 3 games.. Almost everything was just a deep dive of stuff that was shown, which is all well and good, but at 90 minutes it was still a missed opportunity to show some things that are more than 12 months away but still should have something to show beyond a CGI trailer. Still no Hellblade 2, Avowed, Gears 6, etc., which are all games that should be far enough along to at least show a little gameplay and to not have them continue to sit in limbo without any release window (Gears 6 technically not being announced yet).
In the end, it's clear they were hoping that Redfall and Starfield would be enough for people to overlook the fact that none of their other major first party exclusives made any sort of appearance in 3 hours worth of showcases. It's weird they didn't even announce when Deathloop would be coming to Xbox since it's 1 year will be up later this year.
@KilloWertz they did show new trailers that weren’t in the main showcase. It was actually nearer 15+ (sorta see below) though I agree the balance was wrong that’s part of why I only gave it a B/C.
But we know this show is mostly a deep dive into games already showcased. An opportunity to talk to developers, to prevent the main showcase from getting bogged down or too long. I think that is the right call generally and I think they did what they said they would, albeit with the wrong balance.
The ID@Xbox indie highlights reel for example was uber-short trailers of 15 games in a blink or you miss it style, this in particular was a missed opportunity. Considering so much of Game Pass’ success is from indie titles IMO - they are the mortar that holds the service together between the larger bricks - These deserved more than 5-10 seconds of coverage each. But this is nothing new you can’t cover every game for a couple of minutes. Incidentally those games were Tinykin, Spiderhek, A Perfect Day, Autonauts, Wrestling with Emotions, Togges, Sopa, Flat Eye, Coral Island, Ukiyo, Soup Pot, Slime Heroes, Lonesome Village, Phantom Abyss & HK: Silksong (again). It’s worth rewatching that part of the video at 1:49:48 in the showcase to see if anything interests you. That was on top of the new, longer ones for Slime Rancher 2, Valheim (coming to Xbox & Cloud too), Texas Chainsaw Massacre & Stalker 2.
As for Deathloop we know how these exclusivity agreements work (unfortunately, not a fan, but it’s also just business) and they can’t usually talk about dates until the agreement it up. If Xbox could say Deathloop is available Sept 14 2022 on Game pass, and better on Xbox, who would buy it on PlayStaion if they had a choice? Sadly part of doing business. Arkane were offered a deal that they thought was in the best interests of their studio and game. They’re all at it. How many games in the Xbox showcase were Console Launch Exclusives?
They fell into the other extreme. Last year they announced games that are years away from release with CGI trailers and this year only the next 12 months and only gameplay. Instead, they should have a combination of both that is fairly balanced.
Starfield did look pretty cool, as did As Dusk Falls. A real shame GoldenEye wasn't announced, though.
The extended show was pretty good, I think. Spent a little overly long on few things but generally was great, and the deeper talk with Pete Hines was very informative for Starfield.
And I'm weirdly excited for Minecraft Legends despite despising Minecraft normally.
One thing that I’ve not seen is when Xcloud will love to 1080p. Stadia - as bad as it is due to lack of players - really does look amazing on an iPad Pro but Xcloud still looks a bit meh.
Anyone have any ideas on when the upgrade to 1080 will be incoming? @frasergilbert
