A couple of months ago Ashen developer A44 Games revealed its next RPG, Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn. Flintlock looks like a natural evolution from the team's last game, and they've now sat down to discuss how their new game world is being built.
The team emphasises how it has tried to cram more details into its settlements and such, to show a world that feels lived in and more authentic. The game world is based on New Zealand, and the team did plenty of research on its home nation and how to transport elements of it into the digital world.
In terms of Flintlock's characters, expect them to be much more detailed this time out too. The developer is using Unity Engine's 'MetaHuman Creator' to build its character models, and to animate them in a more believable manner.
Core gameplay wasn't discussed too much here, although given Ashen's similarity to Dark Souls in terms of combat, we could see them taking a similar path with Flintlock. We shouldn't have to wait too long to find out anyway, as Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn hits Xbox platforms, along with Game Pass day one, in 2022.

This looks like a game from a studio that’s punching well above its weight. I didn’t realise it was releasing day 1 on GP! Lets hope the gameplay is on par with the visuals.
It looks pretty solid so far. You can see the passion these guys have for the project, and I can’t wait to see more. I didn’t realize it was releasing on Game Pass day 1, so hopefully Microsoft payed them decently in order to grow and provide more experiences.
looks good, but i am SO SO sick of Soulslikes. it feels like literally every other game that comes out is just chasing this trend.
@armondo36 Me as well. When it gets that label all I see is "do not bother playing it". It's made to be frustratingly hard.
Yup i see souls Like as reference point don't bother just slow and clunky movements to make gane hard
This is just 'one' example why I am NOT concerned about delays to Redfall and Starfield and the 'perceived' value of Game Pass. I didn't Subscribe to Game Pass just to get 2 or 3 Xbox First Party games day 1 to 'break even' on Value (Cost of Game Pass vs Buying those 2-3 exclusives). I subscribed for ALL the Day1 releases - 1st/3rd Party, Indie to AAA, Exclusive (timed or not) or multi-platform etc as well as over 20yrs of history of Xbox released games.
I am actually happy that MS took the decision to spend more time and of course Money on their own games - instead of releasing a rushed or 'messy' game out, just to bring in money/subs rather than spend more money to ensure its 'Ready'
In the meantime, whilst waiting for those to release, there will be a number of 'Day1' releases coming to Game Pass - This, Plague Tale: Requiem, Warhammer: Darktide, Atomic Heart, Slime Ranchers 2, Scorn etc and even Stalker 2 is 'still' listed to come on Dec 8th (although I would understand completely if this is delayed yet again) and that's just some of the games we know are coming. Hellblade 2, Forza Motorsport, maybe Gears Remastered or maybe Avowed could still release - and of course Deathloop is expected (maybe with some additional content too released on the same day for PS5) this year too as the 'year' exclusivity deal will of been honoured by that point.
As for the rest of the year, I may not have to 'choose' between playing Starfield and Hogwarts for example, but there are games coming this year to Xbox that I want to play and only have a set amount of time to play. I can't play multiple games simultaneously or time travel to get 'more' hours to spend gaming...
I don't know if this game in particular is really my thing, but I do appreciate the fact that I can try it Day 1 if I choose and decide for myself if its 'worth' playing to completion with NO obligation to invest money into it. Without Game Pass, you are 'expected' to invest money into a game before you really know if you like what the devs have made. Pretty visuals seem to make people hand over money much more readily - even if the game-play, story etc are average at best.
@armondo36 I love them. Not all day everyday, but a good souls or soulslike done right is my cup of tea all day. Ashen was pretty dope too so I'm sure the lessons learned there will help flesh this game out. If you learn the movements and mechanics these games become much easier and enjoyable.
Ashen is my second second souls clone so this is awesome. Embarrasingly my favorite is Lords of the Fallen. I know everyone hates it but I've played it 3 times now and always enjoy it.
@VokDaWiibSlayer it's not an issue of me not be able to play them. Every company seems to think that they HAVE to make their game a Souls-like. Like enough already.
@armondo36 better another souls like than another generic open world inspired by ubisofts lazy design which is most of them these days. Even a budget indie souls like is better imo. There's a few genres I don't get tired of as long as they don't go too far off the genre path. Souls likes, metroidvania and AAA Sci-Horror as rare as it is now. So stoked for the Callisto protocol. Would be cool if it dropped on gamepass since pubg was on there
@BAMozzy yeah people are so entitled now they freak out over a delay as if there isn't 100+ other games on and coming to gamepass. Stoked for darktide, atomic heart, interested in seeing what's up with scorn even though it could possibly suck, then there's indie games that might come this summer on GP such as Somerville, replaced and supposedly the last night might finally come out this year. All three look awesome. Nevermind games like this that they'll sneak in last minute that we've never heard about. Extremely unlikely stalker 2 comes out this year unfortunately, game looked cool .
@armondo36 no, I would argue every company seems to think they HAVE to make an open world now with generic cut n paste checklist filler and looting/crafting mechanics . I'll take souls like over more of that every time. Souls likes are still rare compared to those.
