Earlier today, we were treated to the bombshell announcement (although it had been rumoured for some time) that EA Sports was moving away from the "FIFA" name for its football games as of next year, favouring "EA Sports FC" instead.
In response, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has issued a pretty damning statement in a press release, claiming that "the only authentic, real game that has the FIFA name will be the best one available for gamers and football fans."
Here's what he had to say:
"I can assure you that the only authentic, real game that has the FIFA name will be the best one available for gamers and football fans. The FIFA name is the only global, original title. FIFA 23, FIFA 24, FIFA 25 and FIFA 26, and so on - the constant is the FIFA name and it will remain forever and remain THE BEST."
“The interactive gaming and esports sector is on a path of unrivalled growth and diversification. FIFA’s strategy is to ensure we can make the most of all future options and ensure a wide range of products and opportunities for gamers, fans, member associations and partners.”
The press release mentions that FIFA has granted EA a license extension to release FIFA 23 later this year, but this is only for the simulation football category, "freeing up broader gaming rights for FIFA and different gaming publishers to launch new games and more deeply immersive experiences for fans and football stakeholders."
It's also been confirmed that FIFA is looking into, and engaging with different partners to develop a "major new FIFA simulation football game title for 2024," meaning that "FIFA 24" will possibly go ahead, but it won't be developed by EA.
Crazy stuff!

Really FIFA's the only name that's hated more than EA , FIFA is just a place for greedy hateful and evil old men.
Sony and Microsoft should pass on this as it would be required to stay multiplatform so I see no real benefit especially if it costs 2 billion for the licence.
I reckon take two will be favourites to bag the licence
But just because of the Fifa name alone, it will sell way more that EA sports fc, EA have really shot themselves in the foot with this decision and will end up regretting it.
Battle of the Scums
He is being salty because he didn't get the $1 billion he demanded.
@UltimateOtaku91 but EA will keep majority of league licences and player likeness. The only thing they really lose is the FIFA branding. It depends on how EA does the marketing for the next game. Also judging by all the partnerships announced it looks like they already a step ahead with Nike, MLS, Sony and others tweeting EA Sports FC
EA aren't stupid here.
People are addicted to Ultimate Team. They retain all player likeness and and club licenses, so it's just a simple job of having a big marketing campaign to raise awareness of the name change.
I really don't think the FIFA name can be held in much regard any more. Corruption at its best.
FIFA are more corrupt than the Mafia, great news as far as I'm concerned.
Ha look! The crooks at the top of FIFA are saying FIFA is the best. I’m glad EA dropped the title and didn’t pay the absurd amount of money FIFA wanted.
Horrible organisation.
FIFA is just a name and if another dev/publisher takes the FIFA name, it will just be FIFA in name only, that does not automatically make a game great. I’ll keep playing EA Sports FC as it’ll still have all the official licenses like past FIFAs and it’ll still be the best selling football game even without the FIFA name.
I kinda think ea and fifa deserve each other. You would be hard pressed to find a more scummy duo of companies. I wish the EU would come together and put the kabosh on the stupid ultimate team gambling card packs. I live in the US and it's never going to happen here.
Meh. It's soccer. But as a gamer (heck as a consumer) I will always despise EA.
@GuyinPA75
No it's football not rugby for wimps that American football is
Get ready for Ubisoft or Tencent to snatch that license!
Konami will be the next Fifa holder. Maybe just as a free game like eFootball but rebranded and rebooted with a lot of fifa money for a better devteam. They need this extra year.
So from the sounds of it, the 1 year extension to allow FIFA 23 to go ahead (by EA) is for the simulation category only.
Meaning that in theory, another developer could do FIFA Jam (like NBA Jam but FIFA) and another dev could do FIFA Manager (like Football Manager) - i realise there was a FIFA Manager series back in the day, also by EA
If this was also in the pipeline going forward whereby the EA developed FIFA 23/24/25 etc weren't the only games with the FIFA name, i can't blame EA for going the way of EA Sports FC
@blinx01 @MaccaMUFC @Chaudy Will they keep the licence? To me it read like EA have the official licence for a year and then fifa 24 I would assume will have all the licence teams but not be made by EA? The licence’s going where the name fifa goes. Maybe I’m misunderstanding how much of a big deal this is and EA will also be able to use all the official licences too in their football games.
*skip that. Just read there was an earlier story where EA state they’re keeping their partnerships going forward. Late to the party on this news story.
I do think the majority that play fifa are casual gamers though who probably place more value recognition in the games name than the games developer.
@GuyinPA75 that was my exact response. Meh, it’s a soccer game
@OliverOwen to prevent future confusion, the acronym 'SC' is used in football as well (by some clubs), that would be soccer club.
Honestly, if they want more money, they should just scrap their exclusive deals. Remember when there were multiple NFL Football games?
@Bleachedsmiles I think even casual gamers will know about this, people will stick with EA as it will be what they know, however, I do think people will try the game which does get the license to see if it breaks the current mould.
@Rockboy247 Maybe. I just envision them both on the shelf - one saying Fifa 24 large print on the case. One saying EA sports FC large print on the case. And mums/dads/grandparents going for the fifa one every time …cause they know fifa.
I reckon next year we’ll have the best chance at getting a decent football game if nothing else as you’d assume EA need to be on their A game as they’re effectively introducing this new brand. And who ever the devs/publishers of fifa need to be on their A game as they need to take any momentum the EA sports FC name gains.
Or we could just see the same all EA fifa repackaged but rammed down our throats with marketing due to name change.
The ONLY Authentic, real game that People Play will be the one that delivers the 'best' Football experience - whether its got the Fifa name or NOT.
It may of helped sales to have the 'official' licenses and names, but it was the Game-play and the systems built by EA that helped. EA have that experience and technical ability to make the 'Best' Football sim available and still retain official names and players by partnering directly with others - like the English FA or EPL, La Liga etc as well as partnering with Football Clubs like Liverpool, Real Madrid...
So they might not have the Fifa World Cup, but they could partner with UEFA for example.
If Fifa don't partner with the 'right' developers, that isn't a Guarantee that Fifa 24 will automatically be the 'Best' footy Sim game that people want to 'buy'. Get it wrong, and you may end up with something like Konami's last effort...
Not that I care as I stopped playing these years ago...
