We've got a date! Activision has announced today that the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will officially release on October 28th, 2022, although specifics about platforms and Xbox Game Pass have yet to be announced.
Details are still really limited at the moment, but we do know that the game is being developed with a new engine alongside a new version of Warzone, with Infinity Ward designing both of the experiences from the ground-up.
In regards to Game Pass, it perhaps seems unlikely that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will launch on the service day one, as Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard could take until the middle of 2023 to complete, but we're still hopeful that we might see it on the service this October. For now, we'll have to wait a bit longer to find out.
"Task Force 141 makes its massive return with a global squad of iconic veterans, these Operators include Captain John Price, Simon “Ghost” Riley, John “Soap” MacTavish, Kyle 'Gaz' Garrick and introducing Mexican Special Forces Colonel Alejandro Vargas."

Not saying it’ll happen but the Xbox Showcase would be the absolutely most perfect place to announce this coming to GamePass Day 1. Holding thumbs.
I'm also thinking this now has Game Pass Day 1 written all over it.
Very disappointing, it really feels like Microsoft are trying to bury Halo Infinite. Season 3 releases very close to this and was seemingly looking to be the big relaunch but now a lot of people will likely just stick with MW2 instead.
MW2 is probably my favourite CoD and probably where it started going downhill for me. Will love to get back to it with the remake, especially as part of GP.
MW2 was the last good CoD game, in my opinion. So yeah, I’m excited. Fingers crossed for a day one release on Game Pass.
Loved the last MW, really looking forward to this. A game pass release would be nice but I'll if not I'll still be picking it up.
Think it has to be added day 1 on game pass right? Especially with the delays to Starfield and Redfall, I'm sure Xbox will want to make up for their empty first party lineup this year.
Whilst I've become disenchanted with CoD, I think it's going to be the only game that can fill a Starfield sized hole in Q4.
Paying for it to be gamepass day 1 kinda makes sense, given they're owning Activision next year anyway (barring any snags).
Plus, given CoD sales have been dropping, having it on GP makes sense for Activision... get the game in people's hands, then make the profit on DLC.
Gotta get the agreement sorted before the showcase though... need to have something big to announce for this year (aside from, presumably, F.Motorsport).
@GunValkyrian not yet, deal hasn't been approved so officially still a 3rd party title. However Sony didn't show this game for their marketing partners so Xbox could pay them future selves for day n date in gamepass.
I still think the show on the 12 will be great and a lot of the negativity will disappear around Xbox. They still gotta work on their internal communication as they were hyping starfield like a week before it was delayed because they clearly didn't know it was going to be delayed. 6 months is better than what they did with Halo but still needs work. Having MWII would totally appease the masses.
@Grumblevolcano But this is the window when Call of Duty comes out every year. So, that's more on 343 as the problem for pushing out their season window into gaming season.
@Trmn8r Microsoft did acquire Activision though so you'd think MW2 and Infinite Season 3 would be timed in such a way that both could coexist. Then again, since my comment I saw an article on Push Square saying PS has the usual timed exclusivity hence MW2 will be blocked from Game Pass and so Microsoft may want something Game Pass related in November.
@Grumblevolcano Didn't see where it said it'll be blocked from Game Pass. They are honoring their early beta deal, which I'm sure was agreed to well in advance. But the full game isn't console exclusive, so there should be no reason for it to not be able to launch of Game Pass. I would think Microsoft is hanging on to that announcement though until their showcase next month.
@Trmn8r Sony deals which block Game Pass can be as simple as beta and a mode arrives early + no Game Pass for a year.
@Grumblevolcano this is Call of Duty, not an indie developer. We should know by the June showcase, but I very much doubt that will happen. Especially, considering Microsoft's other games getting delayed into 2023. They need this on Game Pass badly.
Why's everyone seem to think this will be day one on gamepass when the Activision acquisition won't go through until next year
@Would_you_kindly because that's what happened with Bethesda and other developers. And it's already having enough progress to know that it's very likely to happen. Not hard to create contractual agreement clauses with secondary options if it somehow falls through.
@Would_you_kindly
Money... Activision exist to make money. MS need something and have the pockets to pay for it. Works for both parties (IF they can agree a number).
@Trmn8r with its older games yeah but none of Bethesda's new releases launched on gamepass infact they haven't even released on xbox yet
@antstephenson depends what's in the contract with Sony there could be something that says they can't put it on subscription services till the contracts over no one knows 🤷♂️
@Would_you_kindly those two were different situations and you know that. Call of Duty is not a Sony exclusive game. There is no one year platform exclusive contract like there was with the two Bethesda games.
After the disaster that is Vanguard and how Modern Warfare 2019 was a complete campfest, I will be passing on this one.
I don't expect to see MW2 on Game Pass. The reason being that Sony (I thought) still has the deal over CoD which is expected to run out with 2023's CoD release.
As we know, MS would honour all pre-existing contracts so I don't expect MS to put CoD on Game Pass until after the Sony deal concludes...
Hope they bring this on to Xbox One.
