Sad news if you're a Witcher 3 fan today, as CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the free Xbox Series X and Series S upgrade for the game will no longer be releasing in Q2 2022 as planned, having been delayed indefinitely.
The reason for this is because the team wants to finish off the rest of the next-gen version in-house, which means Saber Interactive is seemingly no longer working on the project, and they're "evaluating the scope of work to be done":
"We have decided to have our in-house development team conduct the remaining work on the next-gen version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. We are currently evaluating the scope of work to be done and thus have to postpone Q2 release until further notice. We'll update you as soon as we can. Thank you for your understanding."
The Witcher 3's Xbox Series X and S version has been delayed multiple times at this point - it was first announced all the way back in September 2020 - and it sounds like it could still be quite a while until it graces our new consoles.
When it does eventually arrive, The Witcher 3 will boast the likes of ray tracing and faster loading times for next-gen consoles, along with free DLC based on the Netflix series of The Witcher. Let's just hope we don't have to wait too long...

Think we have had enough upgrades, remasters and remakes.
2 years into new generation this November, let’s have some new generation only new games.
It’s not like we have an abundance of them at the minute.
I know delays are the norm but they seem to be particularly bad at hitting their dates.
Problem for them now is if they release this later in the year, it will just get lost in the crowd of new games.
Spring/Summer would have been an ideal drought to release during.
I dunno. I saw the way saber handled the switcher III and how cdpr handled cp2077. I have more faith in saber, at this point, than cdpr.
I can't complain about a free upgrade. All I can say is that I almost played the game when it got the last free upgrade on Xbox One X and now I'll wait for the Series X upgrade to play The Witcher 3 for the first time... in 2024.
Take your time, do it right.
Wooooow. You wanna dump one of the best Port and enhancing specialists to take it in house and start over? That's some serious crazy.
@Krysus for real man, looking at the state of cdpr I very much doubt they can do a better job than Saber
Seriously have no idea why this stuff ever gets announced so soon. Keep it quiet and just surprise us once in a while.
Might as well just forget it and focus on a 60 FPS mode for Cyberpunk on the Series S. Any game without in this day and age just tells me that the developer couldn't be bothered. Horizon 5, Halo Infinite, AC: Valhalla, pretty much every "triple a" title has a 60 fps mode for the Series S. Come on.
@Kooky_Daisuke eh no. Speak for yourself lol
The Witcher 3 is a 2015 game... Everyone and their kids already played it. Why bother? Just make a remaster for ps6/xbox abcxyz
I wonder if the fact the Russian team of Saber interactive was working on the port and with everything going on they felt the publicity wasn't worth it.
Disappointing in the delay, I wanted to finish it and the DLC once the upgrade was available.
I would rather know if they plan on finishing the job or not, but life goes on.
@Berry-sXe One of the people interviewed for the Switcher 3 port is from their Russian studio, so it probably was them. And given Switcher 3 and Halo CE Anniversary's quality, they were probably doing a great job too. But with this war, CDPR is wise to finish it themselves. I'm not sure if it's even legal to hire them to do the port now. Saber also owns 4A Studios from Ukraine so they are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Many lives have been ruined by Putin's insanity.
I’m disappointed by this news as I was holding off playing any other massive open world game by hoping this upgrade was coming soon. Ah well I may as well pick up from where I left in AC Valhalla.
Man, for a milisecond I thought I read "...it has been released", instead of "delayed". Why do I even bother?! Lol
I think this version was getting too expensive to develop, hence bringing it back in house before it was finished. I don't blame them for that, if costs were spiralling it is really not worth it at this point. Finish it when you can, no crunch. It's not a big needle mover anyway, just a nice to have for fans.
Just a disgrace really, been looking forward to this since quarter 2 2021, when it was originally promised. Bet your bottom dollar if this was a chargeable upgrade, it would of been here by now. Talk about a fall from grace CD Projekt Red...
