Developers seem to be going all in on Unreal Engine 5 for this generation, with multiple studios moving over to Epic Games' new technology. However, we've not actually seen many real games running on the new engine, until now.
Nacon has revealed Hell is Us, a new action adventure game running on UE5. It's being developed by Rogue Factor, and the game's Creative Director, Jacques-Belletête, previously worked on Deus Ex at Sqaure Enix. And it shows.
We're getting Death Stranding vibes from this trailer, from the environment style to the strange tone and weird-looking enemy types. That influence might just carry over to gameplay too, as the developer says Hell is Us players will be "guided by their feelings and instincts" rather than traditional quest logs and such. Here's quick developer rundown on the game's premise:
Hell is Us is a third-person action-adventure game set in a semi-open world where the main character sets out to learn more about his past in a country ravaged by civil war. The almost total self-sufficiency of the country hides a dark secret: the recent appearance of supernatural creatures resembling ancient headstones and monuments in the region. The citizens call this phenomenon "the Calamity". Armed with weapons specially forged to fight these monsters, the protagonist must learn how to defeat them and use his equipment wisely.
Publisher Nacon says Rogue Factor's new IP is "one of our most ambitious projects" and it's aiming for a 2023 release on Xbox Series X|S, PC and PS5. We'll definitely be keeping an eye on this one.

Third-person, Action Adventure, (semi) open-world: my three magic words 💙
Nice to see this getting an xbox release, as theres not as many 3rd person action adventure titles as Id like on the system.
Its a no brainer to use UE5 this gen. Even major corps will find it hard to develop an engine that performs so well, is likely to have relevant tools for your game design, and will have a large number of devs with proven experience. If you dont break your back just trying to get your engine working, you can spend that effort building unique tools and working on gameplay.
For smaller devs, the advantages are almost overwhelming.
This looks very interesting. It will probably be a while a way, but an open world action adventure game always is a one to watch game for me.
