Xbox's Aaron Greenberg has taken to Twitter to thank fans for helping support the "growth and adoption" of Xbox this generation. He's also hopeful supply of the Series X|S will continue to improve around the world.
It all stems from a tweet by VGChartz which suggests Xbox Series X|S sales are currently outperforming Xbox 360 sales 17 months into the new generation lifecycle. The new Series systems have supposedly sold around 4.49 million units more in the same time frame.
Although there have been ongoing stock issues, some other contributing factors likely in play here include the availability of the Xbox Series S and the fact it's a more affordable system. The figure provided by VGChartz doesn't separate XSS sales from the XSX model, either.

Yes I bought my first ever Xbox series S in Christmas
Got mine in February 2021 and whilst I haven't played on it as much as my ps5 and switch I'm still happy with my purchase
The idea that all three platforms are doing so well (and during a living cost crisis) is really impressive.
@uptownsoul Agreed, 17 months into the 360's lifespan would be April 2007 which was before the gigantic system sellers like Halo 3 arrived.
Glad it is all going well so far, with strange times.
Covid, chip shortages and cost of living increase.
Will it take the Xbox360 in the same full length time span. It could be close, I think the series consoles would need slim versions and also some very good top AAA games to match the Xbox360 life time sales Over the same time period.
I own both so I've definitely helped those figures.
I was able to pre-order a Series X for launch and despite also owning a PS5, the Series X has accounted for the 'vast' majority of my gaming since the start of the generation.
What makes this 'most' interesting to me is that the 'business' plan of MS appears to be 'detrimental' to console sales success. No 'exclusives' as all will release on PC's and playable via streaming to last-gen consoles, Mobiles/tablets etc and to date, only released 1 game, MS Flight Sim, that is 'next gen' only. In the build up to release, these factors were frequently mentioned as reasons why people won't buy an Xbox.
However, its clear that people 'want' to game on Series consoles - whether its Series S or X. Its clear that some are not necessarily interested in the 'Highest Resolution' visuals possible on console, happy enough with the Series S (whether its 'better' value, more suited to their HD TV's or just more available until they can upgrade), happy with the services and ecosystem and want to be part of that community.
The fact its selling well whilst not actually 'needed' to play any Xbox 'exclusive' is more testament to the ecosystem MS has created and that they actually 'wanted' to game on 'Series' consoles by choice...
Good to see Xbox is doing good again this generation. They have learned a lot of lessons from the XBO generation and aren't there yet, we still have to see the fruits of all the studio acquisitions, but if the games start rolling out i don't see it doing worse than the 360 generation in the end.
That's all the more impressive considering the shortages, I promise I'll definitely get a Series X one of these days! My One X is definitely getting a bit long in the tooth.
Got mine about 3 weeks ago. Having a lot of fun with it and Iโm glad to hear itโs doing well despite the chip-shortage. Looking forward to more game reveals
Gaming has grown on the whole, so this is pretty cool. Hoping it outsells the 360 in the long run, though.
Proud owner of a Series X. Previous console generations I was:
Nintendo: Primary
Playstation: Secondary
Xbox: Nope
This gen I converted to:
Xbox: Primary
Nintendo: Secondary
Playstation: Nope
NO REGRETS!
Missed out on Xbox One, so I picked up a Series S last December.
Very good numbers so far. Itโs a great system in desperate need of some real good exclusives though. Theyโve been slow on arriving I just hope Microsoft can keep the momentum going until the games finally do arrive. Itโs looking pretty barren this year for Xbox software with delays hitting for some and no firm release dates on others. Iโm kinda surprised Microsoft hasnโt signed on any timed exclusives to bridge the gap until their first party games start dropping. Xbox 360 had a lot and I think it helped pry PlayStation 2 owners over to Xbox.
Amazingly I managed to get my XSX a month after release from Amazon. Paid the RRP too, which was good because there was a lot of news around at the time with Amazon orders not being delivered/stolen.
Wow, that's incredible ๐
P.S. I have a very nice AMD gaming PC, an Xbox Series X on an OLED and an Xbox Series S on a "regular" Dolby Vision certified TV. I LOVE THEM ALL ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฏ
Got a Series S day one to replace my VCR XBO and picked up a Series X a few months ago when Amazon UK had that big Xmas restock.
I've always been a multiplatform gamer, I own every XB and PS console so I take no sides but its great to see MS up there again and doing really well out of the gate this generation.
@Grail_Quest I've owned one PS console and haven't bought one since. Really not my thing.
To people saying about Xbox One being more successful than Xbox 360 early on, Series X/S was released one year and a half ago and its future looks much brighter than Xbox One's considering all the new studios and acquisitions. If we are being serious, we can't compare those platforms. The best of Series X/S is yet to come. What big current-gen exclusive is there apart from Flight Simulator?
Besides, Series X/S has sold around 14m and PS5 around 19m, far from last-gen ratio. Sure, some Sony fanboys will say that PS5 is sold out but that's what happens to Series X since launch except for a more organised Christmas stock that sold out as well. Those Sony fans also say that Series S is easier to find but let's be serious again, no Sony fanboy dreaming that finds a PS5 under $1000 will kill their dreams for a Series S.
All in all, considering that Series X/S games are released on Windows and are available on smart devices and Xbox One via Cloud, the success of the whole Xbox market (consoles/Windows/smart devices) is huge even before the new studios are ready to release the exclusively current-gen hits. If you add the Game Pass vs. PS Now ratio, Xbox is more successful than PS even if more PS5 consoles are sold. Software and subscriptions are more important than the number of consoles since last generation.
