Microsoft has just revealed the latest Xbox Games with Gold selection and, it's safe to say it's not gone over well. While we sometimes think there's a bit of an overreaction to these reveals, the outcry might actually be justified this time around.
After the announcement, Xbox fans took to social media to vent their frustrations. As it turns out, one of these games has actually been Games with Gold before, back in 2015.
Another comment pointed out that this is the second time such an event has occurred with Games with Gold. Either way, they're right with this one, as MX vs. ATV Alive was indeed handed out for free years ago. On Twitter, some fans made their general annoyance heard too.
Some even suggested removing the program entirely in favour of an improved freebie:
Here at Pure Xbox, the selection didn't go down well with readers either. Our monthly Games with Gold poll showed that almost 50% of voters deemed this month's games "terrible!"
We have to agree that it may well be time to ditch GwG and move on to another perk. After Sony's recent PS Plus re-shuffle, maybe Xbox could do something similar.
What do you make of Games with Gold as whole? Is it time for it to go? Let us know in the comments.

I think Gold should just be dropped altogether, its rather stupid paying for multiplayer because you bought their hardware but the same games on PC are free
Just remove the second G in the title.
Get rid of Xbox Live Gold completely. Although if they did that, many people would downgrade from GPU to GamePass for Console and forgo the older EA titles and cloud stream.
Good hasn't been good for about 2-3 years now, just put the extra funds towards gamepass
Include online play in the basic gamepass and remove Gold. Problem solved
I wasn't an Xbox gamer in 2015 so welcome reissued titles I've missed previously. Perhaps they could release 1 reissue per month in addition to the regular 4.
Perhaps a combo to try to please everyone.
Example; 2 regular titles, 1 reissue plus a movie rental.
@uptownsoul Let's wait and see before we make assumptions.
I actually wonder how many people sub to gold month to month. You would thing anyone with a yearly sub would get the almost free upgrade to Gamepass. MS obviously tried to force everyone to do this when they raised the price of Gold. You can tell that they WANT to get rid of it.
@Rafie exactly!!! Well said mate
Both gold and plus have wild deviations from great months to not so great months but also different people like different games.
Hue is getting a lot of love
I thought MX vs ATV Alive was already in GWG it's sitting there in my library next to MX v ATV Reflex. Weak MS
I think Hue was a GwG game at one point as well. I have it in my library but no Gold stamp on it, but not all are like that I believe.
And I wouldn’t drop coin on a random indie unless it was highly hyped, which I don’t recall this one being, maybe after launch as a sleeper hit but I’m 90% sure it’s a reissue.
My prediction: eventually, platform specific GamePass and GoldLive will both go away.
The only thing left will be GamePass Ultimate.
You won’t need it to play online, but GPU will still give you some Meh games you can claim permanently that won’t rotate from the service.
There won’t be any yearly subscription option so it will be 15/mo.
Repeating games is kinda unacceptable.
I'm not even upset with the games themselves, I like Hue ans MTX but I already have them and hundreds of other titles either from the services or from sales. Between those and Game Pass, more monthly games means very little at this point.
XBL already lets you have free cloud saves and party (something PSN doesn't do), so they may as well make online play play free too.
I'm ok with way it is. They are free, so no need be that upset, really. Combining things together only inviting higher prices.
@Hypnotoad107 My guess majority people buy Xbox Live year at a time, since doing so gives a discount. Game Pass ABSOLUTELY NEEDS the same option. I'm canceling mine when that $1 deal runs out think next year.
@Stnkygrngo In my opinion 99% of indie games on Xbox are straight up, putrid garbage that's not even worth the energy and time to download, let alone play.
They really need to get rid of the free games portion. I get it why they don't because people will complain how they aren't getting free games. Let's be honest though are these games people will even play?
@Tharsman well to be fair there are ways of getting discounts on quartly GPU subs.
@uptownsoul I'm referencing your claim to Sony making the lowest tier games worse. No we haven't seen that, so don't make assumptions.
They're free games. Yeah, they almost always suck, but they're free. Ignore them if you don't want them.
You know Microsoft is just gonna let the program rot into a lost relic the likes of the community app, and other mismatched parts of the Xbox platform.
@carlos82 it's too late for that now unfortunately if there was more backlash against Xbox live gold back in the 360 days maybe
Yeah games for Gold, in fact Live Gold in general simply feels like a relic of the past these days. They might as well just make Gamepass their all around subscription.
None of these subscriptions is worth it. Especially considering the GWG are only useful for the permanent ownership on the 360 licenses.
People are complaining about PS+ and that has the best deck building game out, Slay the Spire.... Sony should show them this lol.
@GunValkyrian those "free" games are part of a paid subscription service. As in they're not "free" at all.
@MetalGear_Yoshi Sony should show Slay the Spire to whom? It's also on gamepass
@TheSilverFalcon I think he means that Sony should direct anybody complaining about the free PS Plus games this month the poor Xbox Gold offering as a way to demonstrate how much worse it could be.
@TheSilverFalcon different subs.
@BigBigToe bingo.
@Fishticon I will never understand the wiring of particular brains where something that’s part of a service that you’re actively monthly/yearly giving money to, is considered free.
It wasn’t even a year ago that Xbox didn’t allow you to play ACTUAL FREE GAMES with needing a gold subscription. How crazy is that????!
Gold is a relic. The notion of being charged for a game and then being charged monthly to unlock part of that game you’ve already paid for should never have taken off in the first place…but we knew no better and had very little choice. 2022 when they bring all their games to pc without additional charges, and actively push for cross platform support/play…and most publishers have already paid for their servers and push loot boxes and mtx…we really shouldn’t be asked to pay monthly to unlock portions of £60/70 games anymore. The whole notion is crazy. And then have to listen to Phil Spencer tell us how we’re ‘valued’, and go on yet another rant about ‘inclusivity’…whilst treating console owners completely different, and frankly worse.
But… as Sh*tty as the notion of Xbox live gold has been, everybody that uses gamepass should hope they continue with the gold subs simply for the loophole of it allowing us to get gamepass ultimate super cheap. When that loophole goes burn it with fire.
@GuyinPA75 I always top off my three years every year when it is half price during Black Friday sales.
@Hypnotoad107 I used to too. Honestly rarely see good Xbox live year membership on good deal. At most $10-$15 off. Used be able snag a year for $30-$40 total.
This is making me upset, now. When are we going to realize these "free games" have always been just the throw-a-bone GIMMICK perks to smooth over the actual reason XBLG and PS+ exist: pay-gating multiplayer services?
Once a consumer remembers this and accepts it fundamentally, the "quality" of these games becomes as important as determining what type of eggs you want for breakfast (if you can even eat them, that is).
@uptownsoul PS+ Extra, Premium/Deluxe tiers do look attractively priced, versus PS+ Essential, when considering the bulk subscription options (3-month and especially 12-month fees)
